Mounjaro, menopause and me.

I have finally plucked up the courage to book a consultation to see a weight loss consultant/provider with a view to hopefully starting Mounjaro (tirzepatide) in a fortnight.

I am post menopause and seem to be losing and then finding the same 21lbs over the past decade. Currently on HRT and should be for the foreseeable future.

Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation? Feeling nervous but need to do something as currently almost 100kg.

I am 58 and have lost and gained the same 2 stone over the last 8 years or so. Need to lose 3.5 stone to get to healthy weight. I'm on HRT and started Wegovy on Saturday night. It's been great so far.

Eastendboysandwestendgirls · 23/07/2025 21:06

I'm post menopause and on HRT. I've been on MJ for 11 months and got to the very top of healthy BMI today - I've lost 46lbs. 9 lbs to go to my target.

IKeepMyToasterInTheCupboard · 23/07/2025 21:09

Started MJ and HRT on the same day, not sure which is doing what but I feel much better.

Doggymummar · 23/07/2025 21:09

I gained ten stone during covid, menopause etc. Lost 7 on mj so far. Highly recommend if you are obese.

GiveMeWordGames · 23/07/2025 21:12

I am 53, a couple of years post menopause, and not on HRT and have lost almost 3 stone since March on Mounjaro. Another 2 or so to go. Very happy indeed.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 23/07/2025 21:21

That’s amazing @Eastendboysandwestendgirls. How have you found it?
Are you exercising too? I used to go to the gym but lost my mojo the heavier I became.

@RadioundermypillowI think taking the first step is the hardest part in my head, well done you. I am 43, early menopause.

Are either of you taking supplements too?

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 23/07/2025 21:25

@IKeepMyToasterInTheCupboardthat’s an impressive approach, glad you are feeling better.
@Doggymummari am definitely obese, time to tackle it. 7st is a phenomenal achievement.
@GiveMeWordGamesamazing, I am hoping to see a difference come Christmas.

Eastendboysandwestendgirls · 23/07/2025 21:29

Thank you, I'm delighted! It's been fine - had a lot of heartburn for the first couple of months, but got used to sleeping propped up and a small price to pay for the weight loss. I move a lot at work, but haven't done any additional exercise. I will be starting to exercise now as I need to tone up and as I have less joint pain, I'm hoping it will be easier.

GiveMeWordGames · 23/07/2025 21:44

Christmas is plenty of time to allow yourself to notice a difference.

I take a few supplements - Menopace, high strength Vit D, B Complex and Magnesium every day, Iron occasionally. All of these were things I was taking anyway before I started MJ.

The only change since starting MJ with magnesium is I have both Glycinate and Citrate available so I can take whatever works best for any gastric side effects.

As I'm not on HRT I'm particularly aware of not losing too much muscle/bone density so I do weights at home and trying not to let my calcium intake drop too much, which means compensating for all the yummy high fat cheeses I'm no longer eating loads of. Cottage cheese, greek yoghurt, semi-skimmed milk in my iced coffee, all help with that. And I still allow myself the odd bit of cheddar. 😄

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 23/07/2025 22:11

I take magnesium every night and vitamin B12 injections every 8 weeks. Will look at vitamin D and calcium supplements too.
Currently trying to up my protein intake too.

So happy to hear your positive stories.

Hey
i went into an early Peri at 39 I reckon maybe earlier. I put on loads of weight and was heavily impacted by the symptoms. They were dibilitating. However on googling symptoms of obesity, they were very similar so I had a double whammy. I am medicated but switched from oral progesterone to the coil which is much much better. MJ is known to cause bleeding if on oral progesterone. MJ does work and my menopause symptoms are better overall. Still get some and on high meds but all manageable so the weight loss will 💯 help. I am a slow loser and my calorie burn (via watch, so fully know it’s not accurate but I can see trends from pre menopause to pre MJ to post!!) so it’s an indication only show my burn is significantly less than before despite still being overweight. Exercise as mentioned is key. Cardio is good for heart health but I moved to spin and low impact due to increased risk of osteoporosis. With little running as have to for job fitness. Weights are key. Can start on body weight then low weights then onto gym weights. Loads of stuff on YouTube! I am 3 stone down and sat at my new comfort plateau that’s hard to break through but I will!! Was 33 bmi now 27 and meno symptoms are way better. Good luck!!

Marvel4 · 24/07/2025 06:24

Ps meant to say when it comes to fitness I would encourage functional fitness. So sports professionals do it like basketball players for example. They won’t do full squat with bum to floor as that’s not how they move in the game and is pointless so do shallower squats and work on power from there. Don’t worry if you can’t lift your body weight over your head but can you lift a person from the floor who has fallen. Does that make sense?? Work on functional fitness as these are the things that will help you moving forwards as opposed to lifting 100kg over your head!

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 24/07/2025 06:50

Thanks @Marvel4, that’s really helpful. I was pre at around 32 and have been post for almost 5 years now at 37, last period was 2020. Between lockdowns and being told by GP I wasn’t saw me pile on weight (although I was always a size 14/overweight) and lose all interest in fitness. Until then I did Spin and CrossFit regularly but when everyone around you is getting fitter and you are getting fatter it’s easy to lose focus and willpower. My BMI is almost 37 now, I am obese and want to change.

I’m 46 & well into peri - been on HRT for around 12 months now which has helped with ache & pains.

i am obese and have been morbidly so since having twins at 38 and gaining a lot during that pregnancy. I’d lost and gained the same 2 stone for five years after they were born. it’s been rubbish! Around 3 years ago I gave up dieting as I was getting nowhere & it was not good for my mental health & wellbeing. So I took up personal training with a focus strength training. I go religiously twice a week and walk on average 15k steps a day. The exercise has really helped me feel at peace with my body.

i had a health MOT recently and although i was obese i am very fortunate not to have any symptoms of metabolic disease - healthy bp, cholesterol, blood sugar etc… the only risk factor was bmi - so being in a better place now I decided now’s the right time to work
on improving it!

I started Mounjaro on 01 May - I eat 500 calories under tdee which is around 1400 - 1500 a day - I’m calorie counting & coupled with the exercise I'm losing around 1kg (sometimes a bit more) per week. My bmi has gone from 44 morbid obesity - to 38 just regular obesity. And Weights gone from 124kg to 108.

I still have a long way to go. and will take time - MJ is not a quick fix, but it finally feels doable.

good luck on your journey keep us posted x

spoonbillstretford · 24/07/2025 14:30

I'm 49 and stopped taking my pill in December and started taking Mounjaro in March. No periods for seven months and counting. Also no menopausal symptoms, and 25lbs off. BMI 29 to 25.

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 24/07/2025 16:30

I’m way past the nasty bits of menopause, been on MJ for 13 months and lost about 8 1/2 stone, halving my body weight.

It has completely changed my life and I feel fitter and healthier than I have in 30 years (or maybe ever!).

You don’t really need any specific supplements so long as you are eating a balanced diet. I do take glucosamine/ chondroitin/ omega 3 and collagen for my joints as my poor knees have suffered carrying an extra me around for so many decades 😔

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 25/07/2025 21:39

It’s so inspirational hearing how well things have gone for others. I am twitching to get to my appointment, 12 days to go feels a long long time.

@SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease can I ask why you are waiting for an appointment? Whilst video calls are becoming slightly more common and will be more so in the near future, most suppliers are still only requesting photos and medical details. You could get started next week!

I have paid for a consultation at a clinic. They have in person check in’s monthly taking BP, weight and measurements.
Perhaps foolish, I’m just wanting the reassurance I’m injecting correctly etc as the practitioner walks you through the first one.

Hi op, would you mind sharing how much you'll be paying at the clinic?

Best of luck with it all!

I'm really swithering about it all. I'm definitely considering taking MJ, but I keep worrying about side effects.

My BMI is 32. It's gone from 35 to 32 with intermittent fasting, but has stalled there for the past year, so I'm wondering if I could use a helping hand.

@Somethingsnappedit starts at £170 for 2.5ml and up to £210 15ml.

Hopefully if I gain confidence I can switch to an online prescriber in time.

Cancellation appointment for tomorrow afternoon, I’m glad this way I don’t have time to talk myself out of it.

That's great!

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 29/07/2025 22:39

I did it. The nurse was really great and took 45min to talk me through everything, talk about her own experiences, take my measurements, weight, BP etc then showed me how to do the injection myself - which didn’t hurt at all!

Made sure I ate well today, lots of protein, and stayed well hydrated to prepare for the appointment as per her advice.

Here’s hoping I have as inspirational a tale as you guys in the year to come.
