How much are your WLIs costing you and how much are you saving on food?

I’m interested to know whether other people are finding the cost of WLI is less than the amount they are saving on food costs.

Obviously different suppliers cost different amounts and there are various ways of making a pen last longer (longer spacing than a week, splitting doses, using the “golden dose”). And people’s food budgets before and after will be very different.

I thought this also might be of interest to people wondering about taking WLI but worried about the cost.

For me, the cost is about £85 a month or £21 a week. I reckon I save at least £100 a month on my grocery bill.

Mines is around £23-25/week, lower dose pen/use for 6 weeks, but not from one of the cheapest.

Grocery bill has not reduced, probably increased as now includes a lot of steak/beef (from butchers), salmon, mackerel, cod, prawns, chicken etc to get protein in at most lunches/dinners which is expensive rather than bulking up meals with cheaper pasta, rice and jar sauces, especially when I have to buy the same for whole family as I can't eat steak while they have pasta!!

Ponderingwindow · 18/06/2025 15:05

I’m not in the uk so my costs aren’t really relevant, but they are very low as it is covered medically.

if anything my food costs have increased. My meals are small, but the focus is quality lean protein and lots of produce. Before I tended to compromise often and eat with the rest of my family, both of whom have arfid, so my food was very different.

MyNiceClothesFitMeNow · 18/06/2025 15:11

Interesting @Ponderingwindow and @WeAllHaveWings

I think I had a fairly good diet before, lots of quality protein etc, just too much carbs and puddings on top. So I haven’t been buying more protein except maybe more eggs and Greek yogurt.

I use the fifth dose so my 10mg pens are costing me £32 ish a week. I’m not sure my food budget has changed much but I used to spend more than that on wine a week 😬 so I’m def saving money!!

endzone · 18/06/2025 15:15

I don’t think I spend less on food than before, I spend quite a bit still but I eat better food so it’s possible around the same.

PoundsLost · 18/06/2025 15:16

I have increased my fish and protein intake so while about the same, I’m eating fillet steak, duck breast, salmon etc and in other meals with carbs, I tend to eat the carb last so I don’t fill up on it as I’ll get full sooner than I would not on MJ.

technically drinking less alcohol though. So that’s saved.

Pumpkinforever · 18/06/2025 15:23

Costs about £40 a week depending upon how many doses. Spend less on crisps, biscuits and takeaways which is offset by spending more on better quality protein and fruit. Alcohol consumption so that costs less.

But …. Spending more on supplements, beauty products, fitness, and on smaller size clothes.

MJ is a health investment in my future so I don’t mind the increase in costs.

PearlsPearl · 18/06/2025 15:29

I use the 5th dose so £24 a week.

I am DEFINITELY saving money. At least half of that if not more! I no longer have Starbucks once or twice a week, pick up a dessert when supermarket shopping, have a 'little treat' every time I go into a shop or the post office, eat any kind of snacks at all, also no breakfast. Have not wanted or had a takeaway (don't want to risk SEs and couldn't eat much anyway so what's the point?), no starter or dessert when we've eaten out.

NewLifter · 18/06/2025 15:32

You will only save on food if you were having a lot of takeaways. You still need to eat and actually you might find yourself buying more expensive foods to ensure you're eating well.

Burnserns · 18/06/2025 15:36

I pay about £26 per week (5th dose, 10mg with the cheapest pen £129). I think my shopping costs about the same as pre MJ. Mild savings from fewer cafe visits.

Gingercar · 18/06/2025 15:36

My pen comes in around £30 a week, although I will switch to a cheapie supplier soon.

I wouldn’t say my shopping bill has gone down. I still have a good appetite and ability to eat so far (I’m just starting week 5) and I’m eating a lot of berries, seeds and grapes, which are probably more expensive than the chocolate I used to eat! But the weight is going down, slowly but surely. Technically I can’t afford this, I initially thought I’d do a few months to set me off, but I think I’ll be a lot longer than that, and I’d like to keep going.

MyNiceClothesFitMeNow · 18/06/2025 15:42

@PearlsPearl what is SEs?

I agree, I would continue on WLI even if it was costing me the full amount. The difference being on them has made to my wellbeing is huge. I’m just interested in the cost issue.

I don’t agree with this. I don’t have takeaways now and I didn’t before starting WLI. And whether you will save on your food costs depends on what you were eating before. For example I save loads when I’m away on trips as I’m not eating lots of snacks in cafes.

I am on 15 now & that just cost me £34 a week for the 5 weeks (using bonus dose)
Wouldn't say I was saving money as I didn't have lots of takeaways before.
I snacked on cheap crap.
Probably a slight cost overall.

Fatmumslim01 · 18/06/2025 18:46

So far I've paid £180, £180, £84, £99 and then £20 on bonus dose syringes which I think will last 5 months.

I'm not saving anything on our food shopping but we are saving on takeaways, lunches at work, random "treats" like crisps and chocolate

northernlight20 · 18/06/2025 19:11

I’ve saved a fortune on not buying wine and beer and going out almost every single weekend.

PearlsPearl · 18/06/2025 20:49

@MyNiceClothesFitMeNow side effects! :) We had a takeaway maybe every 3-4 weeks.

Galadali · 18/06/2025 20:58

I spend around £30 p/w on my pen, and save at least £6 per day on lunches/coffees/random snacks. I now only eat 2 meals a day and the person who ummed and aahed about taking MJ because of the cost is now saving money.

SkibidiSigma · 18/06/2025 21:07

Costs around £25 a week, Inc golden dose. Maybe save £10 a week in wine costs. None on food shop and none on takeaways as I never had them anyway. I can't afford it to be honest but still feels worth it

PumpKim · 18/06/2025 22:39

I'm spending about £30 a week. Grocery bill hasn't changed at all, still need to buy the same weekly shop to feed the family. I'm probably spending more on supplements now too so definitely not better off.

Billybingbong · 18/06/2025 22:51

My pen cost me £27 per week. I'm embarrassed to admit we were having 2-3 takeaways a week, spending around £30 each time, so I'm saving a small fortune. It probably evens out though, because I'm spending more on healthier foods, better quality meat cuts, fruit etc.... and Vinted!

Helpingabit · 19/06/2025 07:59

The biggest money saved for us is probably takeaways….. as often I just don’t fancy them . We probably averaged at two a week ? Now it’s closer to two a month since January- and we will often share things now (like just getting one pizza to share ) and I don’t think I have had a McDonald meal since January either- I have had maybe three wraps when out and about.

we do spend more on things like protein yogurts , but I don’t think we are much worse off even with both of us having the jabs .

I have lost 54lb since January
husband 42lb since march time ish

Fantastic user name @Fatmumslim01 😂

Can I ask how you reduced your costs from £180 to £84?
