Disappointed with first week of mounjaro

I had my first 2.5mg injection of mounjaro 3 days ago. I don’t have side effects but my appetite isn’t very suppressed. I do feel a little less hungry and have cut my calories a lot but it’s quite a lot of effort. I think reading all the positive stories on here I got my hopes up thinking I’d just not feel hungry at all straight away. I know it’s only been 3 days but I expected a lot more appetite suppression. Anyone else experiencing this? Does it get better when you go up to 5mg?

Gosh these threads are so annoying. Have you done no research? 3 days? This is a long term medication. Months and years!

If the thread’s annoying you feel free to scroll on by instead of commenting! I was asking if anyone’s experienced similar. I know loads of people on it who say their appetite disappeared on day 1. Sooo you’re telling me it’s going to take months or years to feel a significant reduction in appetite? Cos that’s not what the research says

I started on Sunday - I feel the same as you.

I could probably still eat loads if I wanted to but I do feel 'full' even though I've not eaten yet.

I had about 1200kl yesterday and didn't feel starved by bedtime managed to sleep easy aswell.

I think 2.5mg is just the starter for your body to adjust to the medication.

It's very person dependant. Some people feel it working almost immediately for others they have almost no benefit until the higher doses (and for a few it doesn't work at all).

If 2.5mg isn't doing much move up to 5mg after your first pen, keep re-evaluating as you go, and move up the doses until you get good satiety after eating a healthy meal. Suppression comes and goes and (in my experience) is rarely constant.

Hey
I'm a newbie on moumjaro.
I did have a few side effects, diarrhoea and really eggs burps 🤢
I lost 3lbs in week 1. Did notice I couldn't eat half as much.

Now week 2 no side effects. I'm going to up my dose though as I have my days I don't feel any different.

Give it time though. See what weigh in brings.
Good luck.
Don't give up x

Mangolover123 · 17/06/2025 12:19

I still feel hungry at times and I still want to eat. 2.5 is the starter dose, 5mg is the medical dose. I think it is better if you feel a little bit hungry, use it as a tool rather than a crutch.

It has suppressed my appetite but I can still eat a healthy meal of a good size. It limits my snacking. But 3 days is nothing. It did take the food noise away from me and I do stay full for longer but it is not the complete appetite suppressant as it is for others.

LightCameraBitchSmile · 17/06/2025 12:19

You shouldn’t expect appetite suppression after 3 days. How much research did you do?

yes some people feel it from day 1. Ut for most of those people it’s placebo!! It takes months to get up to the ‘proper’ dose at which it works. You should not expect anything in the early days

Bansheed · 17/06/2025 12:25

I lost 2 stone in 5 months, 2.5mg for three months and 5mg for 2 months. It was a good steady weight loss. It is better to slowly reduce calorie intake as it stresses your body less and reduces hair loss and loss of skon elasticity. What weight are you as a 6/7lb wight loss in month 1, which then slows to a steady 4, maybe 5lb a month after is what I aimed for.

Bansheed · 17/06/2025 12:26

Also it has a half life of one week, so accumulates as the weeks go on..

Incognitoburrito88 · 17/06/2025 12:48

Is there a June starters thread you could join? I found my fellow starters really helpful in the first few weeks when I was desperately trying to work out if I felt anything! It was so good being able to compare my experience with people at the same stage.

I think I felt a bit disappointed with my first week too. I was constantly thinking about food and definitely having to use willpower to stop me eating but at the same time I do think my appetite was a bit less. I’m now on wk 11. I’m 23lbs down and I lost 8lbs in my first 2.5 wks (I was on holiday so couldn’t weigh until I got back). I briefly went up to 4mg last wk but have come back down to 2.5 this wk as the side effects were too much. So I do think you can achieve good losses on 2.5 mg and I also think day 3 is simply too early to tell if the drug is going to work for you or not.

Vatsallfolks · 17/06/2025 12:57

Losing weight on 2.5mg is extremely unusual. It is designed to accommodate your body to the drug. If you are even slightly insulin resistant, then you will need to take the drug AS RECOMMENDED.. which is to increase the dose every 4 weeks until you reach the dose that gives you a decent suppression . For me this was 7.5.. from 2.5 -7.5 (9 weeks) I probably lost about 6lbs.. total.
However from 7.5 - 15mg (the max dose ) which for me was a 6 month period I lost 77lbs. Taking me from a size 18/20 to 8/10.
(and treated myself to a tummy tuck once I had maintained for 6 months )
I maintain on 7.5 mg. I will be on this drug for life . Which for me is fine. Being obese made me so unhappy and uncomfortable. My life has changed unrecognisably through being able to move and actually enjoy exercise .

Be patient. It’s so worth it. !

MagnoliaTreePetals · 17/06/2025 13:42

Don't despair @Roxietrees .

A lot of people don't get much suppression at 2.5, and they need to move up the doses to really get going.
As I am sure you know, 2.5 is just the starting dose, to get our bodies used to the medication. Yes some lucky people have a good reaction and even stay at that dose, but the vast majority move up.

You have done really well by cutting your calories and getting into the right frame of mind for when it does start to fully kick in.

I know that having made this big decision, and taken the brave step to start injecting, we all want it to happen immediately (if not yesterday), and with some of the posts telling us how amazing the earlier doses can be, & so effective, it can be disappointing to find we are going to have to take what feels like the scenic route, but is in fact the normal route.

idrinkandiknowthings · 17/06/2025 13:48

I experienced instantaneous suppression when I first started, but I have a friend who didn't until she increased to 7.5 and it's now kicked in properly. I know it's disheartening but stick with it. I've lost nearly 3 stones in 4 months.

BlazenWeights · 17/06/2025 14:01

It’s been 3 days. Give it a rest. Come and complain after two weeks at the very least.

Kinkyroots · 17/06/2025 14:18

I’m 4 weeks in on 2.5 and have significant suppression along with feeling full very easily. I have 5mg ready to go but am wondering now if I should stay at the 2.5 until it isn’t doing it? I lost 8lb in the first 2w, don’t know what now as on holiday overseas. Have felt nauseous a couple of times, and got very shaky when I don’t eat when I do get hungry, but honestly, I feel like I’m a different person. Really odd, in a good way.

Lostuser · 17/06/2025 14:26

I’m about 3 months in and I’ve barely lost any weight, I’m persevering with it until the end of the end of the year. Just going up to 1 mg so 🙏🏻

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 17/06/2025 14:26

The reason a PP said these threads are annoying is because there are soooo very many of them so posting to ask this question shows how little reading people are actually doing!

I think the ‘loads of people who are on it’ that you know are somewhat ‘romanticising’ the early days as not many people actually have no appetite at all from the beginning. In fact, that should not be your objective at all! I have been on mounjaro for a year and am yet to see my appetite disappear but have managed to lose over 8 stone in that time.

There will be times when you WILL be hungry. There will be times when you WILL have to put in quite a lot of effort to cut your calories. It’s not a magic bullet and it does not work instantly.

Keep working with the medication and you will see astonishing results. Just not in the first 3 days!

spoonbillstretford · 17/06/2025 14:29

It takes time. Even after the next jab at 2.5mg you may see a difference as there will be more of the drug in your system next week.

The charts look like this when you take it week by week.

I am on 10mg now but had 12mg of mounjaro in my system 24 hours after my jab as there is always some in your system from the last one.

Disappointed with first week of mounjaro
Flatulence · 17/06/2025 15:38

I've only just ordered my first pen but my anxious brain has made me speak to about 50 people who are on - or were on - Mounjaro, including a friend who is a hospital doctor, a nurse at my GP clinic and my boss (!). The consensus is that... Everyone is different. It seems some people see clear results straight away while others see little or no change until they are on a much higher dose. Most people are somewhere between those two extremes. I think it's reasonable to commit to six months of treatment before deciding if it's helpful or not.

Histoscientist · 17/06/2025 16:58

Usually takes 72hrs for the dose to kick in fully for me everytime and im on 12.5mg now, 2.5mg didn't do much for me though and only lasted 2 weeks. 5mg was a different kettle of fish, full whack struggling to eat kind.
My friend who wasn't even obese or overweight and lied to get it and put on layers of clothes on for the photos, didn't feel anything much even on 5mg other than feeling full quicker and not snacking!

macandcheeseforthewine · 17/06/2025 18:25

I started in mid Jan and still don't really get suppression. I also get food noise too, but I am more able to ignore it. I do get satiety after eating my evening meal which really helps.

I'm on 10mg now, and on every dose change have thought it might happen, but no.

My husband on the other hand had suppression from day 1, only went as high as 5mg, has hit his target and is back down to 2.5mg for maintenance and still has suppression!

JustPinkFinch · 17/06/2025 19:01

I am on week 2 of 2.5mg and I definitely still have an appetite, but I am able to diet easily. I am hungry but fine only eating my 1500kcals. No cravings. Easiest period of healthy eating I have ever done.

Does it help to consider it more a willpower increaser than an appetite suppressant? That's how I feel about 2.5mg.

Lazygardener · 17/06/2025 19:24

I had immediate suppression on 2.5 mg and lost 9 lbs in the first week, and over a stone in the first month. Since then, however, it's been a pound or a pound and a half every week. That's fine by me, Everyone is different, and you just have to find your way with it. You are only at the very beginning of the process. Good luck.

ShrankLastWinter · 17/06/2025 21:29

It’s better to think of it as satiety rather than suppression. You are likely to still get hungry for meal times, but you should also get fuller faster. It is crucial to eat protein because this gives you more and more lasting fullness. You also need to eat slowly and mindfully.

But as everyone else has said, it’s only been 3 days! Some people have strong effects on 2.5, stay on it for weeks and lose a pound or two every week. Some people need to go up faster.

As you said, you are feeling a bit less hungry and have been able to cut your calories a lot. So it is in fact already helping you.

Rae79 · 22/06/2025 11:17

1.1lbs on in my first week of monjaro… wasn’t expecting to see that however know it’s a long term plan. Just a little disheartened. Side effects been slight fatigue , constipation and headache (mild). Appetite has reduced and did from day 1, although day 5 it wore off slightly. Just had second injection! How’s everyone else feeling on the MJ journey?
