Restarting MJ after stopping at goal weight. Anyone else?

Mj4me · 15/06/2025 12:38

So hit my goal weight of 9st in Jan and came off MJ.

Over 6 months I have regained 14lbs and have decided to go back on MJ to firstly lose the weight again and then possibly do a low maintenance dose for a while.

Admittedly I went back to old habbits after a while and am determined to change my habbit properly and permanently this time.

Surely no-one will prescribe it at 9stone? I think you’d be better off trying to get the weight off not using it as you would have to change your habits.

TourangaLeila · 15/06/2025 12:41

Still working on reaching goal weight personally, but I have accepted that I need to work at this forever.

What old habits did you pick back up again and what are you specifically going to do to change them? You need to set yourself specific goals to achieve and make a plan to maintain your loss.

Personally I feel that you see MJ as a quick and easy fix. Work at getting the 14lb off the traditional way.

MrsMiagi · 15/06/2025 13:11

I'm not sure you would be prescribed again to lose just a stone. Have you tried calorie counting and upping the exercise?
What habits had you fallen back in to?

I'm 10stone and have had it prescibed already.

They can prescibe maintenance doses down to a BMI of 21.
And you can restart with a BMi over 21 if you lost the original weight with MJ

You can get prescribed again. The NICE guidance says mounjaro is allowed to be recommenced at a healthy BMI to prevent the weight gain.

I've heard pharmulous, swift dr and pharmacy2u will represcribe to people who stopped with a different pharmacy.

Not sure what pharmacy you were with, they might consider it, but a lot of the pharmacies are just interested in the easy customers and aren't bothering with customers in your situation. They just want to sell as many pens as quickly as possible so just say no.

I've attached what swift dr said to me and they also vaguely price match.

I'm staying on long term due to PCOS. No amount of habits are going to cure my insulin resistance so I've just accepted I need it long term. Your situation is my greatest fear so I did a lot of research to help people in that situation.

Its a maintenance dose but I'm hoping to lose the stone first and then maintain.

I am 10st 4.5lbs and my pen has already arrived.

All in line with prescribing regulations.

Good luck with this, OP, maintaining is hard and hopefully you will get back to where you want to be

WeAllHaveWings · 15/06/2025 13:23

Obesity is recognised as a life long condition for many, and many patients will struggle when they stop treatment. The goal is to ensure patients do not relapse and the health risks associated with that.

With proof of a Mounjaro previous prescribing history some pharmacies will allow patients to restart to maintain their now healthy weight. monj.co.uk has a list of providers who will consider patients who are starting to regain weight and wish to restart. A few will restart patients with a BMI >=21 after a consultation and evaluation.

@Mj4me well done on your original weight loss, and trying to maintain without support of medication. It hasn't worked out, providers recognise this is a risk and many people will have been in the same position as you. Don't feel bad if you continue to need, or choose, treatment to support maintaining your weight and health. Good luck on your continuing journey.

Mj4me · 15/06/2025 13:24

Yes it was pharmacy2u who have prescribed me. They were really helpful and just wanted proof of weight from previous prescribers, proof of prescriptions from other providers and photos or body and scales with dated sign.

That's good to know, you're the second person to say pharmacy2u represcribed to you.

Were you with them before or are you a new customer with them?

That last part...shouldn't everyone do that then? If you don't agree with Mounjaro for maintaining and think people should lose weight the traditional way why are you on a MJ board? Are you taking it?

New customer. Previously with Medexpress (who stopped prescribing to me because I had my gallbladder out) and then numan, who were just too expensive

I'm really glad you're sorted. Honestly it would be my worst nightmare to be cut off at goal and not allowed back on so I'm glad you're sorted.

That's good to know. Im not at goal yet but the more I read the more I think i will need a maintenance dose. I don't think I have read many stories of people being able to come off MJ completely for a long period of time after getting to goal. Noone I know personally has been able to. If we could do it without then I guess we wouldn't have needed it.

Yes I am, have been since November because I have 8 stone to lose and need to be able to stick to a calorie deficit for at least 12/18 months. I then plan to titrate down whilst I learn what maintenance looks like.

If I only had a stone to lose I'd just get my arse moving and get back on the maintenance calories for the weight I want to be and stick at it.

It is so hard to keep the weight off when you're at goal. A lot of people need mounjaro long term.

I lost weight 15 years ago and I couldn't keep it off. Trust me I tried everything. I knew what to do but nothing would work. You can see if you look closely all the diets as I was gaining weight and it was so inevitable and horrible. I was cycling to work, eating healthy, nothing would work. It was my PCOS with insulin resistance.

I'm glad OP went back on when they need to lose a stone until waiting until they need to lose all their weight again.

But I don't have PCOS or insulin resistance. I don't anticipate having those unique challenges.

TourangaLeila · 15/06/2025 14:48

I have a friend, who is of a similar mindset to the op. She is losing on the MJ but not changing anything she does. She doesn't want to put thrle work in for it. Just just wants the meds to do it for her.

That's fine but until you're in the situation you can't judge someone else's decision.

WeAllHaveWings · 15/06/2025 14:50

@TourangaLeila With all due respect. If you haven't come off MJ yet, you don't know IF your plan of "just get my arse moving" will work for you. I hope it does, I think all of us would love to be medication free, but even if being medication free does work for you and you can lose any regain without restarting treatment that doesn't mean it will work for others.

Hopefully you didn't mean it that way, but your "advice" sounds a bit shitty to give to others who do need, or choose, ongoing treatment. Everyone is simply trying to do the best for themselves.

But I do, because this is why MJ and the like get such negative press. So many are just quick fixing.

Such a waste of time and money and a real toll on the body.

It's right there in the NICE guidelines that people should be supported to maintain their weight with diet and exercise, with or without tirzepatide.

OP is doing nothing wrong.

Buttcraic · 15/06/2025 15:09

If it was 'just change your habits' and 'just get your arse moving' nobody would need MJ. As far as i can tell it rewires the faulty wiring that keeps telling you you need to eat when you dont. Take it away and the wires just short out again. Stands to reason you then need a maintenance dose until the docs figure out a way to permanently rewire.

What was your original starting weight if you don’t mind me asking pls?
