Does anyone use a walking pad?

MrsMiagi · 03/06/2025 11:47

Average work day i get around 800-1000 steps in. My target is 5000 but can only reach it at weekends or if i am off work. Sedentary job requiring me to be glued to the computer. I worked from 8.30am-10pm yesterday, total step count 780. I work from home so put loads of hours in (job is very full on).
Does anyone use a walking pad to get their steps in? I do go to the gym when I can but if I finish work late it's closed. Mornings need to get children ready for school and nursery so can't go then.
Im just looking at ways to increase my TDEE which is very very low.
Im 5 ft 4 172.8 pounds and TDEE around 1550

I use a walking pad, I put a tv programme on that between 45 min to an hour and walk. Sometimes, I walk in numerous short bursts, but I love it and it has really helped with my weight loss

Cerberus1808 · 03/06/2025 12:43

I have one. Bought a cheap second hand one off Facebook cos I know what I'm like with buying stuff then not following through on it, but I'm using it more than I thought I would so now looking at upgrading to a better quality one that I might be able to run on one day as I'd like to try C25K when I lose a bit more weight

Enrichetta · 03/06/2025 12:47

No experience of walking pads but I highly recommend weighted vests.

Mine is 5 kg but you can start with 2.5-3 kg if this feels like too much for you.

very effective, both for weight loss and strengthening shoulder muscles.

Lostworlds · 03/06/2025 12:48

I have a walking pad and I love mine! I do a half hour walk in the morning before I get up and showered for the day and then a walk again in the evening. I usually put on a tv show and watch whilst I walk.

sociallydistained · 03/06/2025 13:01

Yes I have one I use it almost every day to make sure I reach 10k. Some days I get lots naturally but others it's more like 6-8 and I'll just go on in the evenings to finish up my steps. I got mine for Christmas and love it. I'd definitely reccomend it OP because doing so little each day will definitely take its toll. You'll notice lots of benefits.

menopausalfart · 03/06/2025 13:15

Bought one off Amazon a few mths ago. I make sure I use it every day while watching TV. My fitness level has massively increased. Plus, I've lost weight from my middle.

lifetheuniverseandeverything42 · 03/06/2025 13:25

Any recommendations of actual walking pads? I’ve been considering getting one. Cheers

Beabeautiful · 03/06/2025 13:45

I've just got one - had it a week, and time will tell whether it will speed up my weightloss, but I've bought it mainly to help tone my fat legs during my weight loss (week 7 of manjaro)
The only tip I would give is buy a good one- there are lots of independent reviews out there - but get one with the handhold at the front - I didn't and I need to strand next to an upstairs window ledge to keep my balance - this may improve in time.

amber763 · 03/06/2025 13:52

Have been considering one for ages but not took the plunge. Can anyone recommend a model?

doodleschnoodle · 03/06/2025 13:58

I have a WalkingPad Z1 that I use under my standing desk. It’s really good, I use it often when I just feel like I need to move a bit during the work day. It can go up to very brisk walking/gentle jogging speed. It folds for storage too.

If you’re using a standalone one in the middle of the room or something then you’re looking for something that looks more like a treadmill in design. A lot of walking pads are generally for under desk use as they don’t have hand rails.

Cerberus1808 · 03/06/2025 14:04

The needing handles thing I think is kinda dependent on what your balance is like, I can walk fine on mine without looking at it but I know some people say they need the handle to balance properly

MrsMiagi · 03/06/2025 16:40

Thanks all, any recommendations?

Think all of the non £500+ ones have really hit and miss reviews from the research I did before I got one, I ended up getting one second hand to try it out, might be worth checking Facebook marketplace

carrotycrumble · 03/06/2025 17:19

I bought one fully expecting that within a fortnight it would be gathering dust under my sofa. But I was wrong. I use it nearly every evening to top up my steps to 10k.

I walk on it while watching tv. I can do it quite mindlessly but like a PP I do need to hang on to something - I actually use a floor mop thing and use it a bit like a Nordic walking pole on one side!

I perhaps should have bought one with a handle but actually how I use it works fine. I feel so much better for getting 10k steps in a day and am sleeping better and losing weight. I’ve surprised myself at how I’ve stuck to it.

carrotycrumble · 03/06/2025 17:21

Mine is a DeerRun one btw and they’re currently selling for around £160 I think.

fatgirlswims · 03/06/2025 17:22

800 step per day in total? Or purposeful exercise. That’s very low unless you have mobility problem

menopausalfart · 03/06/2025 17:25

I bought an HBTower from Amazon.

Yeah I can just about do it without holding on but I would never do it without a chair or something next to me because I do need to grab it sometimes, especially if I look to the side or something. I also can’t go too fast. Mine was a Christmas present and my mum didn’t realise it didn’t have hand rails!
I’ve actually seen people use walking frames as a makeshift handrail which I’ve considered doing. Definitely depends on your balance like you say.

BatFaceChops · 03/06/2025 17:32

It was an absolute no from me

bought one and hopped on it and was as sick as a dog within minutes. Some people are really badly affected with motion sickness on them so bear this in mind (it’s to do with the walking yet going nowhere)

fingers crossed it’ll work for you though

@Enrichetta
Which weighted vest do you have / would you recommend?

TIA 😊

InfoSecInTheCity · 03/06/2025 17:56

Like you I have a desk based work from home job, what I’ve started doing is in charging myself for coffee. Every time I put the kettle on I have to do squats or arm exercises with my handweights while I wait for it to boil. Because I have a coffee problem, this means I have several 5 minute bursts of exercise a day without adding any cost or taking up any extra time from my day.

800 total. No mobility problem. The school and nursery runs are in the car (too far to walk) and I mostly work from home. On a day where I barely move It's been non stop meetings. I eat at my desk to fit more work in. Today I had to pop out and get the train so hit 5000 steps by 10.30am but only on 6100 now.
I need to get more in because my gym days aren't often enough to make a difference

The one I have is from SHEIN, 5 kg vest for strength training. I checked out quite a few YouTube videos to find one that I liked. This one is very comfortable.

I love this. I may adopt it. I have a couple of alarms set during the day where I jog on the spot for 5mins with small weights. It’s not much but I’m trying to do more and add a few other exercises into the mix. I’ll probably get some heavier weights soon.
