Very slow weight loss, is MJ for me?

2025mj · 20/05/2025 23:07

Sorry if somebody has said something similar.

I've been on MJ since March this year. I have recently upped my dose to 5mg. I've had one injection.
Very little side effects after going up(yippeee) but I'm STARVING. All I think about is food, I'm not sure if this is because I'm making an effort to not eat as much

After going up to 5mg, I did expect a big woosh of weight to come off. I'm on my 11th week with a weight loss of 12kg.
Which I'm ecstatic about, I'm genuinely so happy. I wouldn't of managed this on sheer will power.

My TDEE calories are over 2,000. I don't eat anywhere near that. I'm drinking 3l a day, I'm doing around 20k steps a day (walk to work, walk dog, light jog)
But it's just not dropping off me. I still look really big. Any more tips please?

Is there a typo in your post? You’ve lost 12kg in 11 weeks? That’s amazing. The weight is dropping off you. It can be hard to tell the difference day to day though. What was your starting weight?

FunnyCrabDance · 21/05/2025 06:32

If your figures are correct, your shifting an average of 1kg a week? But think thats slow? I think thats at the top end of a healthy weight loss!
Are you taking progress pics? If your starting point is very large then it will take time to really see a difference but it is working.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 21/05/2025 07:18

@2025mj , every time I hear someone say that their weight loss is slow and then go on to say they are losing 1KG a week I want to scream! What exactly makes you think this is a slow weight loss? Have you done your research and looked at what the manufacturer found weight loss wise in their trials? So many people seem to have quite unrealistic expectations about this drug.

Swampthing55 · 21/05/2025 07:22

I would be wanting to slow that down myself, that's too much to fast. I aim for a pound a week and have lost that consistently for 18 months, over 100 pounds

SamDeanCas · 21/05/2025 07:26

Blimey, it’s taken me 7 months to lose 16kgs. I think you might be losing too quickly.

2025mj · 21/05/2025 07:28

I've just seen a lot of people have much bigger losses and getting a bit disheartened is all.
I also have an under active thyroid and I'm coeliac so losing weight was always a massive battle for me and I'd never manage to stick to a diet
So this has been a massive loss for me and I'm aware I couldn't of done it without the injections.

My starting weight was 93 kg but I am only 5'2

Just eat well until you’re no longer starving yourself! I’d be worried that you’re losing muscle so make sure you’re getting enough protein, fibre, fat and calories.

FunnyCrabDance · 21/05/2025 07:56

Well they say comparison is the thief of joy, and in this case its the thief of realistic expectations!
If your hungry then eat more. Even if your loss slows down to half a kg a week its still a good healthy loss.

LavenderBlue19 · 21/05/2025 07:58

But you're losing weight quite fast? I don't understand the problem here. Personally I'd want to slow down a bit to avoid loose skin.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 21/05/2025 08:01

12kg is nearly two stone. That's a huge loss in 11 weeks. What were you expecting?

2025mj · 21/05/2025 11:00

I promise I'm not starving myself, or making myself not eat despite how it sounds. I just meant I have had no suppression, I hear people saying they've had a couple of bites and completely full.

I eat my three main meals a day but I've always been a snacker. I always reach for the biscuits or a sweet treat.
Sugar is the first thing I want to reach for when I'm hungry.

I'm not sure what I was expecting to be honest, I'm more basing my expectations from what others have said. That they've had really big losses.

I am really pleased with what I've managed so far, I'm exercising more, I'm drinking more water, I'm more determined but I also haven't noticed a change. I don't check my measurements so I don't notice the small details but to me I still look just as big and it's demotivating I guess

SilenceInside · 21/05/2025 11:12

Nearly 2 stone in 11 weeks is a big loss. It is really hard to tell the difference when you are looking day by day at yourself in the mirror. Have you got "before" pictures you could compare to pictures of yourself today, in the same clothes? That can make it easier to tell the difference.

Try and focus on what you have achieved - any small goals that you have reached and gone past? Only focussing on one aspect, what you perceive you look like, is going to miss out on all the smaller goals that you have met.

You may also find that as you continue with the 5mg injections, that your levels of suppression build as the medication builds in your system.

Peridot1 · 21/05/2025 11:15

Are you eating enough protein and fibre? Make sure you are as that will help you feel full.

You have lost a lot! And remember you are still on a low dose. The 2.5 is to get your body used to the medication and some people don’t lose anything on that. So you are doing really well.

For some people they need the higher doses to lose much but you’ve lost loads.

What...
your loss IS a really big loss. You don't feel like Mounjaro is doing much but you've lost LOADS so it must have helped somehow? I really struggle with posts like yours, do you even understand how your body works? Do you understand about calories, TDEE, deficits, muscle, water retention, protein, weight training etc? Did you do any reading before you started the medication?

Redlightbulb · 21/05/2025 12:20

I think you need to reset your expectations. A lot of us myself included are losing 1 lb a week or less & I still have 4 stone to go to reach a healthy BMI after being on MJ for nearly 10 months.
Please don't compare yourself to those losing a stone a month until they get to goal. Those folk are probably in a massive calorie deficit & risk getting increased loose skin, gallstones, muscle loss, fatigue etc.
This isn't a quick fix.
Your daily step count is impressive.
The amount you have lost so far seems great to me & would be at the upper limits on what I would want to lose each week.

KoalaKoKo · 21/05/2025 12:31

I have lost a similar amount in 16 weeks - you are doing brilliantly!

I completely understand the frustration though when you see people losing a stone in a month or when you have some weeks where the scales go up. You have to remind yourself that you are in a much better place than you were a few months ago and if you lose it faster than you are you could end up with loose skin! Also if you cut your calories too much you could damage your metabolism, just keep going and you will get there in a few months!

1clavdivs · 21/05/2025 18:58

I'm on 12.5mg and currently averaging a little under 0.5lbs a week. I'd kill for your 'very slow loss'.

Weepixie · 21/05/2025 19:00

Op, I’m losing a pound a week and I’ve been on Mounjaro for 9 months now.

CoverMeInMarmalade · 21/05/2025 19:02

12kg in 11 weeks is 2.4lbs a week.

The only place to see multiple people with considerably faster loss than that is social media like Tiktok - and most on there is lying for views.

It's absolutely daft that someone is disappointed with 2.4lbs loss a week. Wait until you get closer to goal and it slows right down to 0.5lbs every other week!

You have lost same amount in the same amount of weeks as I have.

the weight loss is average for us in the March group (come and join us ☺️) some has had bigger losses at the start which made them loose around 15 kg at 11-12 weeks but most are around 10-12 kg and some less down to around 6-7kg

when I started 5mg at week 5 it did take a few days to kick in , but I lost almost twice as much on 4 weeks on 5mg than I did on 4 weeks of 2.5 , just keep what you doing

MounjaroMounjaro · 21/05/2025 19:11

I've lost less than 1 lb per week and now, 4.5 stone in, I'm really glad of that. You can't afford to lose a lot of weight really quickly. Use your clothes to judge how much weight you've lost rather than the scales - often my scales stay the same but other clothes suddenly fit.

This is very true. I may be losing at a tortoise-like pace, but I am writing this from inside my size 10 jeans.

Yellowsubmarine55 · 21/05/2025 19:13

Be proud of the loss and make sure you take pictures and dig out clothes that haven't fitted to check them each week/month. Get the tape measure out and even a belt to see which hole you get to.

I'm only 5'2 as well and a couple of weeks behind you and have lost nearly 10 kg and I keep pinching myself to see if it's true as I'm chuffed to bits.

Go easy on yourself and check your tdee as that's quite high for a shorter person but you might be younger and more active than me. My deficit figure is about 1300.

InfoSecInTheCity · 21/05/2025 19:15

This isn’t slow weightloss at all, you are losing an average of just over 1kg a week, or about 2.5lbs a week, recommended is 1-2 lbs a week.

you are feeling hungry because you aren’t eating enough, you said in your OP that you are trying to eat way below your TDEE, at most you should be aiming for 500 below TDEE, and what you eat should be high calorie, good fats, high fibre and complex not simple carbs.

MJ works by increasing the amount of insulin you produce, making you more sensitive to the insulin produced and slowing down your digestion. If you eat high sugar foods you are fighting the insulin, if you eat high protein and high fibre you are adding slow digesting foods to a slowed digestion system so you will feel fuller for longer. If you eat low protein, low fibre then you’ll have some of the increased satiety but you’re doing nothing to maximise it.

Ive lost 5 stone since September last year, gone from BMI 33 to 23, have eaten between 1400 and 1600 calories a day throughout, and have reduced carbs to predom8nantoy just those found in berries and green veg. I no longer eat bread, pasta, potatoes and very rarely have basmati rice. I went harder line on carbs because I’m T2 diabetic and even with MJ carbs spike my glucose readings and they struggle to get back into normal range within the 2 hr limit after eating, so I’ve had to accept that me and carbs don’t play well together.

InfoSecInTheCity · 21/05/2025 19:19

If it helps here’s my daily weigh in chart, lots of ups and downs even on MJ weight loss isn’t linear it zigs and zags based on water intake, food intake, sleep, hormones, which way a butterfly farted 7000 miles away or any number of other factors. Some weeks I lose a little, some a lot, some I stay the same, others I gain.
