I’m very new to this world of weight loss injections and have only just starting thinking of it as an option. Can anyone tell me which one is the most effective and has the least side effects please?

Mounjaro, which is the newest and most effective according to a study published yesterday

SilenceInside · 14/05/2025 11:51

There's a choice of Wegovy or Mounjaro in the UK at the moment, for private weight loss prescriptions. Wegovy is semaglutide which is the same as the well known Ozempic. Mounjaro is tirzepatide, called Zepbound in the US.

Both work well, but Mounjaro has been shown to produce greater weight loss in the research trials whilst not having any more side effects, as @bashual says.

Mounjaro because it acts on two receptors instead of one, and I think it gives less side effects. I think it might be cheaper too.

It’s more expensive. Probably because it’a shown to be more effective so they can set their prices higher but shop around different providers charge different amounts.

I’m on mounjaro, it’s only been 2 weeks but the difference in how I think about food is pretty insane really! And I’m 10lbs lighter. If you have any questions dm me, I also have a £40 off code if you go ahead xx

Time4changeagain · 14/05/2025 13:33

I have only have experience of mounjaro, but it has worked for me, I have lost 7 stone in the last year. Some side effects but not unmanageable.

Roxietrees · 14/05/2025 18:41

Thanks for all the helpful posts. Looks like Mounjaro is definitely the way to go then. I’m looking to get a private prescription online. I guess as long as the pharmacy has the registered pharmacy logo it means they’re legit right?

I tried Ozemoic a few years ago, and the side affects were horrendous - it came so close to shitting myself on a couple of occasions that I gave up pretty quickly. Though saying that it did make me feel full almost immediately.

Then I tried Wegovy, and there was minimal appetite suppression and felt like a real waste of money.

With Mounjaro I find that it works in a more subtle way. I describe it as making weight loss easier rather than easy. Though I do think that I will be on and off it for life. I’m hoping that this next step in development is a long term maintenance drug.

It’s been fascinating to have an understanding of what my naturally slim friends feel when they say things like “I was busy so forgot to eat.” Previously I just couldn’t get my head around this.

i really do think that for some of us we just don’t produce enough of the GLP1 hormone and this really does help our systems regulate in the way others manage to naturally.

Any pharmacy on the link I’ve provided above are registered. Think Farmaci is the cheapest provider for the first dose at the moment.

I'm on Mounjaro with SheMed and very happy so far - dropped 20 kgs since January with the help of my injection, eating better and moving more!!

Roxietrees · 15/05/2025 10:32

Some posters have said it changes your feeling towards food..does it act on receptors in your brain then to stop you overeating as well as suppressing your appetite? I wouldn’t say I overeat and I don’t really snack I just make unhealthy choices as am so limited on time. So I may eat nothing until about 3pm then have a big, unhealthy lunch then eat something equally big and unhealthy for dinner about 10pm - terrible habits I know. I also never have any time to exercise. My bmi isn’t quite 30 but pretty close but and I’m biggest I’ve ever been and now being in my late 30s find it impossible to shift (I have tried many times before) it’s so uncomfortable being overweight especially in hot weather. Does the weight still come off fast if you have less than, say 3 stone to lose? I’m 13 st and would like to be 10

merrymelody · 15/05/2025 10:56

Here in Canada, Mounjaro is twice as expensive as Wegovy. (CDN $800 / GBP £430 for a month’s supply of Mounjaro as opposed to CDN $450 / GBP £245 for a month’s supply of Wegovy.) I don’t know of anyone who takes Mounjaro here.

Summersunshinebliss · 15/05/2025 11:22

Following as also thinking about using the injections.

SilenceInside · 15/05/2025 12:09

@Roxietrees weight loss injections don't make the weight come off fast. For some people that can happen, but it isn't the typical experience. The initial dose of 2.5mg which you take for 4 weeks isn't intended to produce significant weight loss for most people. It's a long term process, some people need to move all the way through the dose levels to reach a point where they are consistently losing weight. If your BMI isn't 30 or higher then you won't qualify to start these medications, unless you have a weight related health condition or are one of a list of ethnicities where obese is classified as starting from BMI 27 or higher.

This is an explanation of Mounjaro works, from the Asda Online Doctor site:

"The active ingredient tirzepatide works by activating the receptors of 2 natural incretin hormones: GIP and GLP-1. Both of these hormones affect your appetite by slowing down the emptying of the stomach after a meal. They also send signals to your brain to reduce your appetite after eating. This action creates a feeling of being full and so makes you feel less hungry, even when you have eaten less, which can aid in weight loss."

I started the questionnaire with Superdrug. You have to give them your GP's name. Do they contact the GP and the GP decides if they think you should take it or not? I do have a thyroid issue (hypothyroidism) on 25mcg a day. I will speak to the GP soon but was just wondering if they'd block it.

SilenceInside · 15/05/2025 12:37

@KarlaKK they don’t ask the GP, a private prescription is entirely decided on by the company that you’re using. They ask for your GP details so they can notify them if you get the medication prescribed, purely so it can go on your health record. Most pharmacies send a letter to the GP surgery, the GP surgery admin person uploads it onto your digital record which you can then check on the NHS app if you have it. It’s then listed as a medication that’s prescribed to you.

When you fill out the consultation online you will put details of your thyroid condition, and then the doctors at Superdrug will review it and decide if it’s appropriate to prescribe to you.

I work at a GP surgery and we just get a letter saying that you’ve started on it and if you have any of the conditions and if the doctor has any concerns to contact them x

They won’t need to ask your GP’s permission- a private prescription has nothing to do with them

The only time a GP would need to ‘approve’ something is when they themselves are signing for the medication ie prescribing it, which they are not in this case

No they won’t block it. Hypothyroidism is fine. They process the order and just let your GP know after that. Nothing to be concerned about. I also have a code for a £40 discount off Medexpress. If you would like it, DM me.

GloriaHotcakes · 15/05/2025 13:56

Mounjaro is much better than Wegovy. I like MedExpress and I’ve tried a couple of different pharmacies. I’m an affiliate so I’m allowed to share my code, I won’t put it on this post but if you look on the weightloss promo board on here there’s lots on there. Don’t pay full price. Welcome to DM me too.

InstaMyJabJourneyUK · 15/05/2025 17:02

Mounjaro is the third generation of WLI.

It started with Liraglutide (Saxenda) works on one hormone (GLP-1)

Then came Semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic) which also works on GLP-1 with fewer side effects)

And now its Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) this works on two hormones (GLP1 and GIP receptor) and even less side effects
