Have ordered Mounjaro….to tell, or not to tell…?

I have ordered my very first pen today.

I have told my husband, but am otherwise conflicted about telling people what I am doing. Did you tell people openly? Only if they asked? Did you keep it secret?

i can’t articulate why I feel a bit self conscious about telling people, maybe because it feels like ‘cheating’ even though that isn’t a logical response.
would love to hear what you did!

I think this ‘cheating ‘ idea is utter nonsense- it still requires you to have a big calorie deficit which for most people will still involve pretty strict calorie counting or quite small portions. It’s not as if you can take it and it just ‘melts’ all the flab away - it’s more of a medical ‘aid ‘ so you feel less hungry - would they say the same if you were taking herbal appetite suppressants- which do a kind of similar job of a feeling of fullness , but just aren’t quite as effective and are of less use if you have insulin resistance? They probably wouldn’t think that’s was cheating - because it doesn’t involve ‘an injection’ -

I've just ordered tonight, waiting for approval and I'd like to not even tell my DH as he is pretty worried about the side effects, so I was going to see where the heck I can hide the pen. I'm not telling anyone as I'm petite and 5'2 and I'm a BMI of 33-34 at the moment which doesn't sound much but on a shortie I look like a dumpling.. so my aim is to get to 25 and then come off and stay on the low dose. I've put on 10Kg since starting HRT and pigging out, it has 100% increased my appetite.

Where does anyone hide the pens!

SilenceInside · 26/04/2025 18:29

@almostbloody50 the pen needs to be in the fridge before you start using it, but once in use it can be kept either in the fridge or at room temperature. In the fridge you could put it in a food box that no one would be interested in, like tomato puree tube box or something. Then once in use, you could keep it in a drawer out of the way. But you will also have a sharps box and some needles and wipes to keep out of sight too.

Oh that’s doable. Thank you.

I may tell DH at some point, I just want to gauge any side effects in private if that makes any sense.

Oblomov25 · 26/04/2025 18:41

Don't tell anyone! Think about it first.

almostbloody50 · 26/04/2025 18:41

MzHz · 26/04/2025 14:08

I told my DP and my son initially, I’ve been on it since July last year and am 30kg/4.5 stone down

as for cheating… this isn’t cheating, and it’s enabling me to be far more active than ever before, I went from training 2x a week for 90mins total to now training 225 minutes a week, having added some seriously hefty classes in the gym. My fitness level has improved insanely.

Wow that’s incredible

Oblomov25 · 26/04/2025 18:43

I mean other than your Dh.
maybe a close friend later, but only if they won't tell anyone.

Fuckfacetime · 26/04/2025 18:47

I work with several women my age (50) who have lost three stone or so recently. They are all ‘on a new diet’
it’s very obvious !

Fatmumslim01 · 26/04/2025 18:49

I can't decide whether to tell people or not. I've told DH.

I'm 10 pounds down in 5 weeks so hopefully people will start to notice fairly soon but I can't decide whether to tell or not. On the one hand i don't tell people what other medicine I'm on, although it's not obvious I'm on it like the weight loss will be obvious. But on the other hand I'm not ashamed of MJ, it's fixing whatever in my brain makes me over eat so if I had a broken leg I wouldn't be embarrassed using crutches so why should I be embarrassed using this to make me better?

Still can't decide though!

I'm worried people will think I've taken the easy way out and am "skinny jabs" but the reality is I was a whisker away from morbidly obsese with a BMI of 39.6 and the GP gave me weight loss pills but I was too scared of the side effects so here I am with the jabs

taylorsdoingapart · 21/04/2025 06:50

I've told no one. Not even my husband.

Me neither. A friend has and a mutual friend has told EVERYONE and I just don’t like it too much….
my DH has no idea but has noticed different eating habits and choices I’ve made.
the comments about my other friend have been sarcastic
i have lied too a gossipy friend asked if i was on onzempic - im not but it still felt like an omission (mounjaro here - there’s a difference 😉)

Caddycat · 26/04/2025 12:52

What if you had serious side effects? I'm not judging, just asking as I'm still on the fence as to what to do. This is the only thing that makes me want to share with DH.

I don't have a "D"anyone. I've had very little side effects so far. If I felt ill I would of course tell Dr/hospital/111 or whoever.

Pinkapron · 27/04/2025 00:58

I’m keeping it to myself and DH, as I just don’t want to hear anyone else’s opinions on it!

Overhaul54 · 27/04/2025 12:32

Well I take my “tell all” policy back.

I got a lovely card from my mum yesterday a week after saying my weight loss was down to the jab. It was her telling me she was “very concerned” ,” I’m not overweight” and “theres lots of side effects” being reported.

I phoned her back to ask her what exactly she wanted me to do about her concerns and judgement? After a row we made up had a chat etc. Then this morning she phoned to ask if I was over being cross.
So we had another row. Pointing out she has no idea even which jab I’m on ( apparently they are “all the same”) falls on deaf ears. She rang off very upset.

Sorry just needed to offload.

NorthernLass50 · 27/04/2025 12:49

I’ve told my DH and best friend (who is also on it). It’s great to have her to talk to and we support each other. I’ve no intention of telling anyone else.

User5274959 · 27/04/2025 14:54

I'm nervous of someone asking me directly, and haven't decided yet if I would be honest or lie through my teeth!

No one has asked, or commented that much, so I wonder if it is true that people just assume. Although I've lost the weight quite slowly and not that dramatically and have so far mainly shed timber that came on in the last year or two

TankiniQueen · 27/04/2025 15:12

Yes, I wonder what I would say. My weight loss isn’t that obvious, just 20 lbs lost and 20 lbs more to lose. However, people might notice towards the end.

Personally, I don’t think I would ask someone how they lost weight. It’s quite nosy/rude in a way. It’s really up to the individual to offer it up – if they want to. I find that if people are excited and want to tell you how they lost weight, they do without prompting or questions.

I don’t like lying, but on the other hand if someone asks you a question that you don’t want to or need to answer, you don’t have to tell them the truth! I probably might joke “very slowly” (which is very true in my case) or something equally vague!

(I have a judgemental friend who started ranting against WLIs the other day 🙄 ).

Caddycat · 27/04/2025 15:15

I'm sorry, that's just awful. She's not informed and she's scared for you, which is natural for a mum. Maybe tell her you're stopping as you don't want to argue and just carry on quietly.

Arglefraster · 27/04/2025 15:30

@Overhaul54I'm so sorry that sounds awful 💐

I'm impressed you argued then made up though (not something my mother & I are capable of!!) as it sounds like a healthy relationship so hopefully you can navigate a way though this.

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 27/04/2025 16:15

I’ve told a very close friend as we were trying to diet together and I hated her telling me how well I was doing and being frustrated she was not losing as consistently. It just felt dishonest!

I have then told random people like the dentist’s receptionist (well I wrote it on the form as a med I was on and we had a very long conversation during which, in hindsight, she made it clear she was taking it too! 😂) Had a random conversation with a farmer I know on a regular dog walk and randomly told him (after he stopped next to me with a cry of ‘Fucking hell, what happened to you!!?! 😂) My GP surgery know, the practice nurse knows, all the consultants I have seen recently know…

Weirdly, I haven’t felt able to tell most of my close friends or family 🤷‍♀️ Was having a conversation with my main friendship group last night and one was bemoaning her inability to lose weight and asking how I was maintaining and I randomly suggested she try a glp1 med and she reacted very negatively saying no way as you don’t know what you’re injecting yourself with. I did suggest she did some research but she was adamant so I shut up! I was, however, gobsmacked nobody picked up on my cues or questioned how I knew what I knew etc 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

If someone upfront asked me if I was taking MJ, I wouldn’t lie but nobody has! I find it bizarre really as I have been obese and the fattest person around for DECADES and yet suddenly, as soon as MJ is available, I drop half my body weight!

jaromoun · 27/04/2025 16:35

i told my adult daughter (as we are very close and i wanted someone close to me to know in case i had some horrible incapacitating side effect), my GP and my counsellor.

i have been asked outright byquite a few people and i've just said 'what an odd question to ask'. a friend was ranting about long term side effects, what will they all do when they stop etc and i just tried to remain faintly neutral and changing the subject. she said 'you can ALWAYS tell from their faces. where as you can tell you have done it properly because you haven't got that typical face'. i thought that was hilarious!

i've lost 3st in 6 months and i'm sure i've been tittle tattled about but i don't care.

it's no one else's business and i think it's very rude to ask someone.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 27/04/2025 16:47

I wouldn’t tell anyone because I don’t think it’s anyone’s business but I’m quite a private person!

Others are different, I know 4 people on it at least because they are happy to share.

I’ve managed to lose 1.5 stone through intermittent fasting, cutting out snacking and using the gym. Most people don’t seem to have noticed or haven’t commented on my weight loss so don’t be surprised if people don’t say anything anyway! Maybe some think I’m on injections, who knows!

I think commenting on people’s weight is a minefield so I normally don’t comment unless it’s a huge loss either to be fair!

Overhaul54 · 27/04/2025 17:20

@Arglefraster @Caddycat Thank you.

I feel like a cow arguing with her because she’s just hearing “medication” and then selectively hearing the news. She doesn’t actually know what the risks of side effects are. I just shouldn’t have told her.

Even if it turns out to be dangerous, as a part time smoker and being very partial to a drink her worries are entirely misplaced.
