On holiday in Morocco and I’ve got the runs :(

Hi folks. I’ve been here since Thursday and have 4 more days to go. I jabbed up prior to leaving and am on my second week/dose of 2.5.
I’ve been trying to make good food choices and not overeat. Haven’t been snacking, nothing sweet, etc. But the truth is, eating out 3 times daily is taking its toll. At home I’d be eating much simpler and, as I’m Scottish, not in the heat 😁
Physically, I feel ok. Thank God I’m not vomiting or nauseous. But this is like pooing water (TMI, sorry). The reaction has been delayed; we had dinner at 9pm last night and the diarrhoea came at 4am this morning.
It has to be Mounjaro related. My friend is absolutely fine and we have been eating more or less the same stuff.
There was one fried meal that seems to have triggered the whole thing off.
So my situation isn’t ideal and I need some advice. Would you suggest that I fast for one day, but obviously drink lots of water? I am worried to eat again anyway.
Other than that - despite hating it on day 1! - we are having a lovely time and Essaouira is great 😄
Thank you 🙏

Thinking ahead, I think I’ll do a second month of 2.5. I had no gastro effects at home whatsoever, but this experience would make me wary of moving up too quickly.

Mounjaro will definitely do that to you if you eat something it doesn’t like. I would try and get some immodium from a pharmacy and dose up on it. Last time I had diarrhoea from Mounjaro it took a couple of days to stop even with immodium so I wouldn’t want to let it run its course while you should be enjoying your holiday!

JMSA · 13/04/2025 05:14

Thank you for the reply. I’m lying here fully awake, waiting for replies!
I’m loving it here but part of me wishes to be home, with my familiar stuff like overnight oats and a basic salad!
Anyway, I mustn’t dramatise. It will all be fine.
I have some Immodium but wouldn’t it be better for my body just to let it all flow out?

minipie · 13/04/2025 05:15

I wouldn’t be so certain it’s mounjaro related. I have several times been abroad where one of the group gets the runs and others don’t despite eating the same food. Happened to me in Marrakech. Could be something you touched, a dirty plate, anything.

Always sensible to fast or just nibble very plain food if you have a dodgy tummy. If you don’t have to travel and can stay near a loo I wouldn’t use imodium as if it’s a bug you need to get it out.

JMSA · 13/04/2025 05:20

Hmm, I wish I knew either way, but I don’t suppose it makes a difference at this point. My gut (!) says it’s Mounjaro related.
I’m taking a 2-3 hour bus ride to Marrakesh on Wednesday, but hopefully I won’t need the Immodium by then 😳

sorry to hear this is happened on your holiday. I feel your pain as I have bee up 3 times in the night with diahorreah and in the end just watery crap, it's awful.
Immodoum, some electrolytes and if you can get some meal replacements/protein shakes. If you can find a chemist?

Mumofyellows · 13/04/2025 06:15

My husband picked up two parasites while in Morocco in November from something he had eaten and is still struggling now with his stomach, it has left him intolerant to some foods...so it may not be the Mounjaro!
I hope it passes soon for you!

Mounraine · 13/04/2025 06:58

It may not have been caused by the MJ, but I’m starting to wonder if MJ just makes GI symptoms worse, or that GI symptoms trigger worse MJ side effects?

MyOtherProfile · 13/04/2025 07:02

Do you need to eat out so much? Could you just get something plain from a little supermarket and just have a drink if your friend really wants 3 meals out?
If you still have an issue by Wednesday you could get a taxi to Marrakech so that you can ask for loo stops.

Anotherdayanothernameagain · 13/04/2025 07:18

Second dose of an increased dossage is always the worst for side effects. I could have done with going up to 7.5 this month but I haven’t because we’re away week 2. Just for future info.

I’d love that but there are no supermarkets at all that I can see. It’s all just tiny little kiosks selling bottles of water, snacks, etc. Not proper food.

When I was in Morocco with a big group everyone who’d had the fruit salad had terrible diarrhoea: they’d laughed at me for avoiding it but I only stuck to food that was piping hot or in a packet. As per pp, don’t assume it’s the MJ. Hope it settles soon whatever it is.

There are supermarkets - small ones but you can get basics. Essaouira is one of our favourite holiday locations.

Me and everyone I know who have been to Morocco have got ill,it’s not the injections.

busybrainlazybody · 13/04/2025 08:17

Sorry you're not well, diarrhoea is the worst!
The worst diarrhoea both my husband and I ever had was also in Morocco. I know what you mean about no obvious Supermarkets too.
I just googled and there is a Supermarket chain that has a store in Essaouira, it's called Aswak Assalam address is Quartier Sakala, Av. Al Aqaba, Essaouira, Morocco, there are a few others too if you Google them, you'll probably just need a taxi to get there but might be worth it to give you peace of mind over what you eat. I hope it eases soon and you're able to enjoy the rest of your trip x

JMSA · 13/04/2025 08:27

@busybrainlazybody

That was very kind of you, thank you.

My friend has been several times and neither she nor any of her travel companions have become ill here.
Typical!

I’d be staying very close to a toilet though not Imodium at this point. I think MJ makes any food bacteria worse as it stays in your gut longer. Having had the horrifying experience last week of shitting myself in public, I don’t think MJ diarrhoea can be treated like normal diarrhoea. I had had a bad night of diarrhoea but seemed fine next day so in afternoon had a walk. Half hour from home had warning gurgles but I wasn’t overly worried. 25 minutes later it just turned on like a tap with very little warning.

newrubylane · 13/04/2025 09:26

Be wary of ice in drinks, as it might be made of local water.

ChillyBearLove · 13/04/2025 09:30

Friend was also horrendously ill there. I was a bit but not as bad.

it’s notorious for it. We loved the town though.

SingWithMeJustForToday · 13/04/2025 09:31

I was told the same about Mounjaro making any stomach issues worse as the gut empties slower. I do hope it passes quickly for you though; it sounds really unpleasant.

I have never once been served ice in a drink here. It doesn’t appear to be a thing.

Oh my God, I’m sorry this happened to you. Did it happen at home or on holiday, and was it on a change of dosage?

None of us have ever been ill in Morocco. I do think that it must be jab related. As I mentioned before I would look at getting a taxi to Marrakech so that you have a bit more flexibility if you need a loo stop. Not that there are many but there are some en route.
