On holiday in Morocco and I’ve got the runs :(

Hi folks. I’ve been here since Thursday and have 4 more days to go. I jabbed up prior to leaving and am on my second week/dose of 2.5.
I’ve been trying to make good food choices and not overeat. Haven’t been snacking, nothing sweet, etc. But the truth is, eating out 3 times daily is taking its toll. At home I’d be eating much simpler and, as I’m Scottish, not in the heat 😁
Physically, I feel ok. Thank God I’m not vomiting or nauseous. But this is like pooing water (TMI, sorry). The reaction has been delayed; we had dinner at 9pm last night and the diarrhoea came at 4am this morning.
It has to be Mounjaro related. My friend is absolutely fine and we have been eating more or less the same stuff.
There was one fried meal that seems to have triggered the whole thing off.
So my situation isn’t ideal and I need some advice. Would you suggest that I fast for one day, but obviously drink lots of water? I am worried to eat again anyway.
Other than that - despite hating it on day 1! - we are having a lovely time and Essaouira is great 😄
Thank you 🙏

@JMSA at home. Same dosage I’ve been on for 3.5 months, which is 1.6mg as I have a strong reaction to it in terms of suppression and constipation. Had never had sulphur burps or diarrhoea until this occasion. It was from either drinking some kefir, or maybe some chicken that wasn’t quite right (although it was home cooked, in the same way I always cook it). I think it was the kefir, even though I drink it all the time when not on MJ. I’d tried it once before on MJ and was sick, but thought I’d give it another go.

The sulphur burps were unbelievable. If you’ve not got those I’d say you are in a ‘safer’ zone than I was!

I’ve given up MJ now, it’s clearly not the drug for me! I’m sure you will be fine though, what happened to me seems very unusual, I googled a lot afterwards.

JMSA · 13/04/2025 10:38

@DunkouInteresting. And I forgot to mention that sulphur burps preceded the diarrhoea for me. I started getting them from day 2 of the holiday, so really early on. I should have known at that point that something worse was coming!
At home, I had no noteworthy side effects.
I’m glad you’re ok now x

Thanks for the replies everyone. This is helping me to feel less worried and alone out here. I haven’t told my friend about Mounjaro, and nor do I intend to. That’s my personal choice and she simply wouldn’t ‘get it’.

If you want to be sure of not getting ill in poorer countries, only eat fruit that you peel yourself, don't eat salad it's been washed in dirty water, don't drink untreated water, only eat really hot (in temperature) food. And never believe anyone who says not to worry about these things, locals are immune to most of their 'local' bugs. Five star hotels are probably fine, but I would still be cautious.

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 13/04/2025 11:05

Your update about sulphur burps means that it’s almost certainly the MJ. I had a similar experience on holiday in Corfu last summer.

In your position I would personally fast for a day with LOTS of isotonic drinks. You need to prioritise rehydration. Once you have recovered, I’m sorry but you simply can’t eat out for three meals a day. Either cut it down to two or choose very, very simple options. No alcohol.

I hope you feel better soon Flowers

It may not have been caused by the MJ, but I’m starting to wonder if MJ just makes GI symptoms worse, or that GI symptoms trigger worse MJ side effects?

When my DH was at a&e with S&D, they said they think he caught a bug but the MJ massively exaggerated it.

unsync · 13/04/2025 11:11

Try to avoid fried and fatty foods. Drink plenty of fluids.

JMSA · 13/04/2025 12:22

Thanks. I would think twice about jabbing again before a holiday, at least coming somewhere like this. It’s a shame because I really have tried to make good choices. No fruit salad, no ice-creams, no cake, etc. In that respect it has been a very different holiday for me, as I’d usually be a greedy pig.

My colleague was terribly ill when holiday in Morocco. She was out in a drip when she landed back in the UK. It may not necessarily be linked to the jabs.

SevernWonders · 13/04/2025 12:29

I was on MJ when we went to Morocco last year and had an upset tummy when I overdid the greasy food, but it eased off after a day of bland food.

DP (not on MJ at the time) was also ill while we were out there so might not be down to the jab.

As others have said, the gastric slowing makes it worse.

Hope you feel better soon and manage to enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Yes, I was torn over what it could be. But then I remembered about the sulphur burps prior to the runs, which makes me think it’s MJ. But the change in diet and heat etc won’t have helped, for sure.

I went away earlier in the year. Jabbed on a Wednesday, holiday on Saturday. I was not careful at all with my food, it was fine. I think it makes a big difference if you eat something not advisable on first day or two of the jab compared to later on (though obviously dodgy bacteria combined with MJ at any point will not be great). It was just a week’s holiday and I delayed the next jab until at home.

Hope it clears up quickly. My diarrhoea was really only one night and the next day and was pretty ok after that (as in not normal, but just once a day, and in a timely way).

SparklyGlitterballs · 13/04/2025 12:37

I feel for you. I went several years ago and, following a beach barbecue, had the worst stomach upset ever. Worse was we went on a coach trip to a little market place and upon arrival I was desperate to go. There was only one toilet in a cafe and it was horrendous. Most disgusting thing I'd ever seen. Poo everywhere and no toilet paper. I couldn't use it and had to sit down on some steps and just clench until we got back. Torture!

If you're in a hotel, maybe ask reception if they've got anything medicine wise? I was given something and it stopped it in its tracks. When I got home I was a stone lighter than when I left!

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 13/04/2025 14:56

The culprit is very likely the fried food that you mentioned, OP.

Askingforafriendofafriend · 13/04/2025 19:06

@dogcatkitten not sure about 5* hotels. Someone I know got horrible food poisoning in
a 5* hotel in Morocco! Everyone else staying at the cheaper hotels were fine.

However, all the rest of your advice spot on. The only time I got ill (in India) was when I dropped my guard at the end of the holiday and had some lassi (yoghurt) drink. Boy was I sick.

Mysticmaiden · 13/04/2025 23:10

Fatty or fried food and heavy carbs or common trigger foods on mounjaro. Avoid anything like that from now on. Try to stick to plain cooked food. Try to limit alcohol and increase water intake to 2 litres per day

Anotherdayanothernameagain · 13/04/2025 07:18

Second dose of an increased dossage is always the worst for side effects. I could have done with going up to 7.5 this month but I haven’t because we’re away week 2. Just for future info.

This has been my experience too.

GrimDamnFanjo · 14/04/2025 08:01

I had the same experience myself in Morocco last year. I think I picked up food poisoning on a tour. I was really unwell for 36 hours. I think MJ definitely makes the experience worse.
drink lots of tea and water and eat some of the flat bread they serve at breakfast. I also found the traditional soup really comforting after the worst was over.

JMSA · 14/04/2025 11:01

Thanks everyone. It seems to have passed after slightly less than 48 hours.
Morocco is great and Mounjaro is great. But good partners they are not.

Just in case it helps, there is a Carrefour big supermarket just on the outskirts of Essaouria.
You can get one of the blue taxis from Bab S’Bah (or one of the other medina entrances I think) & you can get pretty much anything there (including medication)
Hope you continue to feel better & enjoy the rest of you holiday!
