How much weight can I lose per month on Mounjaro?

Hello all!

I am strongly considering starting weightless injections (mounjaro) and I am wondering how much weight I can expect to lose per week / month on the medication?

I of course understand that this will vary enormously from person to person. And for context I have a BMI of about 32 so whilst obese I am on the lower level of being obese (unsure If that makes a difference to speed of loss though).

When on the medication I intend to eat relatively healthily, as I am doing so already, don't think I will be doing much exercise though.

Is it realistic to think that I can move to a healthy BMI within 6 months ish?

Thanks for your help!

Well, a sustainable rate of weight loss would be 1 to 2 lbs per week, so between 26 and 52 pounds in 6 months. So, around 2 to 3.5 stones, perhaps.

Mounjaro isn't intended to produce fast weight loss, it's intended to produce consistent long term weight loss. Some people do get some larger losses in the first few weeks if they respond quickly to the medication. The first 4 weeks dose level isn't likely to produce significant weight loss, on average, but for some people it can do.

I have been on it since September last year and had a BMI of just over 30. I have lost 10kg in the last seven months and my BMI is now 28.5. I think I will be able to get down to a health BMI over the next 12 months.

ThirdStorm · 31/03/2025 14:26

I followed a keto diet and lost quite successfully. 2-3lb each week fairly consistently until I reached goal. The MJ helped me stay focused on my meal plans, calorie counting, etc.

bsaptimdaenr · 31/03/2025 14:37

I’m averaging 1/2 a week. Some weeks 3/4 and some weeks none. I have lost 4 stone so far and I’m really happy with the rate tbh. I have a lot more to lose but not putting any pressure on myself with a timescale

Thanks for responding.

To clarify, do you mean you combined keto with MJ? or you did one first then the other? I have done keto before with a fair amount of success but recently I tried again and have found it much more difficult.

if combining keto and MJ is it safe to do so?

What do you think Mounjaro does? By which I mean, how do you think it works?

Because I think you need to understand that the drug itself won’t make you lose anything. It doesn’t act in a vacuum and it’s not a magic fat-melter. The impact it has is on your appetite and feelings of fullness so from a nutritional point of view you’ll need to eat sensibly anyway. But just like any other diet or diet-aid you’ll need to be in a calorie deficit.

Aim for 1-2lbs a month, be supported by Mounjaro in maintaining a calorie deficit and you will succeed. But be aware that it’s not going to do it for you. You need to do the diet-work and Mounjaro is a tool that will make it easier to maintain and not binge.

in estimating your calorie deficit, Losertown is a website that will calculate your TDEE and help you to set your deficit.

I am sure you did not intend it to come across in this way but your post comes off in quite a patronising manner. I have done fairly extensive research into how it works and yes I understand well that it is not some sort of silver bullet and that healthy and balanced eating is also required.

I find the 1lb weight loss per month suggestion to be unrealistically low.

Thank you

I started in October and have lost just over 3 stone so around half a stone a month. I'm still only on 7.5mg, stayed on 5mg for 16 weeks and am planning on staying on 7.5mg for as long as possible.

I have a target weight in mind, but not a timeframe. At first I was a bit concerned about the cost, but the £150 I spend a month on the medication I have saved, we no longer get takeaways and I've completely gone off alcohol so overall not really spending much.

It's impossible to say if you could move to a healthy BMI in six months as you don't tell us how much you would need to lose to achieve this. I have lost on average 2lb per week in the 11 months I have been on MJ but this has not been perfectly consistent - some weeks have been more, others less. If you can maintain a calorie deficit of 500kcal per day then this should theoretically translate to a loss of 2lb per week.

Maye88 · 31/03/2025 15:16

I've been on mounjaro since middle of December and have done 4 pens on 2.5mg
I lost 13.8lb on 1st, 11.6lbs on 2nd, 8.2lbs on 3rd and 9.2 on 4th pen. I do 10k steps a day and follow the team rh plan.

For me personally it's been the best thing i have done for myself. It's helping stick to my calorie deficit. Using it as a tool and in process of changing by mindset against food.
The amount you would loose is hard to say because it really does depend on your calorie intake and activity level. But inbound recommend it to anybody that meets the criteria and has done research into it 🙂🙂

CoverMeInMarmalade · 31/03/2025 15:25

Around 1% of your total weight per week - so as your weight goes down, so does your loss rate.

Winter2020 · 31/03/2025 15:35

From my own and people I know experience I would say up to a stone in the first month then averaging 2lb each week.

I have lost a stone and a half since Jan. (From 14 and a half to 13 stone). I could have lost more weight easily - by eating less and going up the doses more quickly for greater suppression but I want to avoid loose skin and losing muscle mass, and losing hair as much as possible.

I also think some possible serious side effects such as gall stones are contributed to by crash dieting.

I would advise against aiming for overly rapid weight loss and urge you to have a calorie controlled diet aiming to lose 1-2lbs each week.

MJSavesTheDay · 31/03/2025 16:00

I've lost 2.5 stone in 3 months. 2 stone the first two months and this month I lost 1/2 stone. I expect the next half stone will take 2 more months because the lighter you get the harder it is to loose. But then I will be at goal weight so I'm not in a rush.

I started at BMI 27 so I'm already in the healthy weight range and not far off goal and that's all happened v fast in my opinion.

However, personally I didn't experience much suppression on 2.5mg. My first month's weight loss came largely from a calorie controlled diet I started on day 1 of mj, willpower and a bit of placebo effect. I have stuck to a low calorie diet since, which obviously has been made a lot easier now the mj has kicked in (which started at 5mg and is now pretty good at 7.5mg). I have heard this is a familiar story from others - that the effects of mj are more noticeable from 7.5mg.

I think if you start counting calories and tracking from day 1, you can possibly loose quite a bit in 6 months. You are also likely to loose more if you get suppression on 2.5mg. But it's not unusual for some people not to get the full impact of mj until 12mg - which may mean you don't start loosing much weight til month 5.

I think you are not going to know how fast you can loose weight until you start. But ultimately the weight loss will be faster if you can start counting calories and reducing calorie intake from day 1. Adding some exercise each day will also help speed things up, though I know you said you won't do that (why?)

1clavdivs · 31/03/2025 16:03

I've kept a track so I know month-by-month what I've lost, if that helps? I started at about BMI 33 in Aug 24:

Month 1: -7lbs
Month 2: -5lbs
Month 3: -8lbs
Month 4: -5lbs
Month 5: -5lbs
Month 6: -6lbs
Month 7: -2lbs
Month 8: -6lbs

Forgot to say, I'm now BMI 26. After 6 months I was BMI 27. I'm a relatively slow loser though.

This looks like a v healthy, sustainable weight loss. I think mine has been too quick.

OP, this is a good weight loss to aim for and probably a good guide for what you could potentially expect if you watch what you eat, exercise a bit and do things healthily and sensibly.

IDontHateRainbows · 31/03/2025 16:12

I've lost just under 2 stone in about 6 months on it. Most of the time not trying - I just couldn't eat much and have totally gone off sweet food and junk food. Whatever spot was being hit before, doesn't work any more with these foods.

I'm about five months in, and I've lost an average of 0.7kg per week. My starting BMI was 31, and I'm 25.1 today.

However, the loss was faster at first. I lost 3.4 kgs in my first 2.5 weeks in November, then 4.7 kgs in December, 3.9 in January, 2.3 in February, and 2.9 in March.

Hopefully that gives you a good idea.
