A year on Mounjaro.....

Mounjaroversary · 27/03/2025 15:50

Just like the title says, I am coming up to my 1 year anniversary being on Mounjaro.
I just wanted to post a few musings for anyone interested.

SW 15st 10 with a BMI of 32
CW 11st and I'm bang slap in the middle healthy range.
I've gone from a size 18 to a size 10/12.

So I've lost 4 stone 10 lbs, which a year ago I couldn't have dreamed of.
I'm not longer full of bad skin, high BP, back ache and aches in general are gone, I have so much energy to exercise, I sleep like a log (although I did have insomnia on the higher dose I was in) and all in all, life is good. Autoimmune conditions have seen significant improvement too.

I went up to 7.5mg but it was really tough on me, I was losing well on 5mg so should have really stuck with that, my advice to anyone reading this is if you're on a dose that's working, don't move up, 7.5 made me so nauseous and often sick, ruined my sleep and sucked my energy.

My main side effects were nausea, insomnia due to jitters, and just generally feeling a bit bleh, but it wasn't anything I couldn't deal with. Glycerin suppositories sorted any constipation. I also had a loss of libido,I know this doesn't happen to everyone but unfortunately it did for me.

It has transformed my life, I'm now on a very low maintenance dose with the plan of coming off it completely in the next few months, and I know I can maintain this, I will not go back to being that person I was before.
I've only told my husband, sister and two close friends I'm on it, but I suspect others have guessed, or are at least suspicious.

Happy to answer any questions!

I feel a lot better, though I don't feel 'slim' yet. Like I said, still a size 14 and I'd like to get to a 12 which I am hoping another half a stone or so will do. My weight seems to be in different places to last time I lost weight 8 years ago, I got down to 11 and a half stone then and I felt smaller. I think this time I have more belly and less bum!
I'm the same age as you, I don't know if it makes a difference as I'm not that much older than last time, but maybe it does.

Haven't bought that many clothes yet as I'm not at goal, but I'm enjoying feeling slimmer when I lie down or put jeans on!

Yes!!! I am exactly the same, my ass is gone RIP, but I still have the belly, I'm putting it down to having the kids, it's def a lot smaller than it was but I don't think I'll ever get rid unless I have a tummy tuck, which I won't.
I do miss my bum, my DC laughs at it and says it's a pancake, it is. But again, I can live with it, and maybe rectify with squats 😂

You will, just take every day as it comes, don't expect miracles straight away, remember slow and steady wins the race. I lost 1 in stone the first 2 months and averaged about 1/2 lb a week til I hit my goal (which incidentally was 12.5 stone).
Once I'd got to my target I knew I wanted more off, and reaching 11st got slower and harder. But I got here. I have tried to lose more and it's not happening for me now, and I'm not up for the starvation/deprivation route, I think 11st is where my body seems to have naturally settled.
Good luck 🤞

Do you need to try really hard at the healthy eating and exercising alongside?

It comes naturally, I know that sounds strange when you're at the start of this journey, your body won't crave the crap anymore, I lost my chocolate and crisps cravings immediately, that food noise you hear 24/7 goes, the suppression for me kicked in as soon as I took that first injection.
I walked 10k steps most days at the start (I was doing that anyway as I have a few dogs) and as soon as I had lost about 2 stone I bought some kettle bells and do some training with those. I was worried about losing muscle but to be fair I haven't noticed losing, except for maybe my bum!

@AskingForTheMoonOnAStickjust fyi but Boots are normally the most expensive supplier for Mounjaro, often over £100 more than the cheapest provider. For no additional services. The website monj.co.uk is a price comparison of registered pharmacies that supply Mounjaro, if you haven’t seen it.

Thanks for this. It’s so useful.

SupermarketMum · 27/03/2025 18:02

OP that’s amazing congrats.

did you have any hair loss as a side effect? I’m on wegovy but considering quitting because of hair loss. I am hoping maybe mounjaro will not have the same side effect for me!

petitdonkey · 27/03/2025 18:05

Would you be happy sharing which supplier you use? My DH is really anti WLI as are my teen daughters but I’d love to lose the good noise!

well done you and thank you for starting such an informative thread.

If excercise hasnt been part of a persons life leading up to starting Mounjaro it has to be part of your life from day one of Mounjaro along with putting new habits with food in place.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 27/03/2025 18:10

I’m on the second lowest dose of Wegovey and have lost 1 stone in 3/4 months. It s honestly been life changing in so many ways.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 27/03/2025 18:12

To add: you really don’t have to do anything extra for it to work. Yes it might make you more thirsty but you certainly do t have to start eating salad and exercising. I fast anyway but I still have some chocolate each day and a biscuit/crisps etc.

The hair loss is often associated with sudden loss of weight. When I did keto in 2020 I lost lots of weight fast and alongside it a load of hair. It wasn’t the keto that caused it it was the sudden weight loss.

I have hair loss on Mounjaro but it’s the sudden weight loss causing it, even though I am a slow loser, and nothing to do with the actual drug.

SupermarketMum · 27/03/2025 18:28

I am pretty sure it is the drug causing hair loss. I’ve lost weight other times and even more / faster than I’ve lost on wegovy, and I’ve never had to deal with the hair loss

JustSawJohnny · 27/03/2025 18:36

I'm up to the 15mg maintenance dose and by day 5 I can eat entirely normally.

It's so annoying how the drug works so well for some and not for others 😞

I had my last jab yesterday and I could reach for a bag of crisps or biscuit at any given moment. It hasn't put me off junk at all.

I've only lost 30lb in a year. Really quite demoralising for the monthly cost.

I did hear that PCOS really slows down the affects, so I guess that's where I am.

Well done, OP. It's great that you are feeling so much better and enjoying life again.

I have. In fact it’s something that happens to me for different reasons when my body is under considerable stress. Illness for eg.

Mounjaroversary · 27/03/2025 18:43

Re. Hair loss, yes I've lost a bit of hair to be honest, nothing drastic but I'm more mindful of it. I've read that the body will adjust and the hair will regrow so I'm not going to dwell on it too much, I'm using natural products and taking care of it more than I've even done before.

Petitdonkey I use med express, they haven't been amazing and they haven't been rubbish either, by only frustration is that they told me I couldn't order any more because I was below their BMI limit, but I managed to order it regardless.
I think it's really irresponsible of them to expect people to just quite cold turkey.
Anyway, that's my only gripe, there are providers who will provide maintenance for up to a year so I'll switch when med express decide they won't give me anymore

Is that what should be your new normal after changing your eating habits or is it your normal eating from before your WLI. Are you aware of the half life of the drug?

It's so annoying how the drug works so well for some and not for others 😞

Do you actually understand the drug and that it’s only a tool to help you lose weight. That it’s not a magic wand.

I didn't say it was a 'magic wand' and you don't need to be so condescending.

My point is, I have not felt of the benefits the OP describes, on any dose.

The drug does not react uniformly for everyone. On some, it doesn't work at all.

Feel free to knock yourself out with the judgement though, hun.

Thanks. That’s an interesting update to read.

I’m currently waiting for boots doctors to decide if I can take it! I’ve put on 4 stone since starting in a couple of medications that can cause weight gain. One additional one added last summer has seen another 2 stone go on. I exercise a lot and am very active but I’m just so hungry all the time and crave sugary things.

I have already discussed it with my GP - as one of my medications is listed as potentially being a problem with MJ. No direct medication interaction. However, as MJ slows down activity in the stomach, it may mess with the levels of this drug in my blood, which already has to be monitored regularly to stay in therapeutic range and below toxic range. My GP has offered to increase the monitoring of my drug levels if I take it and when I increase dose. However, I have to get it from somewhere else as it’s not licensed for weight loss on NHS. I’m assuming boots will be one of the cautious suppliers… the form said they’d get back to me in 24 hours. It’s been over that but not heard anything. I guess that means it isn’t an instant no but it isn’t a yes either. And then there’s the worry about toxicity even if it’s being closely monitored! I have meeting with consultant in April so I will likely wait till I see them to take it.

I think I might have this problem with lithium. And that’s one of the reasons I haven’t tried mounjaro. I just read from Reddit that one person got lithium poisoning and got long lasting effects. They had to stop taking mounjaro.

did you get side effects that went away when on lower doses or do they persist.

im same weight etc as your starter and considering them

Weepixie · 27/03/2025 19:15

@JustSawJohnny Im sorry but (PCOS aside) the more you write the more it appears that you don’t understand the drug, so for eg it’s normal to feel hungry by around day 5 because so much of the drug you took 5 days earlier is out of your system. It’s not that the drugs not working.

You also have to train yourself to deal with the cravings you’re having and not give into them. The drug won’t do it for you as a matter of course.

I hope you’re happier with your journey going forward.

I’ve seen that Reddit post. I wonder if they took it without GP knowledge and therefore didn’t have additional checking of blood levels? Also if they remembered to stay extremely well hydrated. I can let you know what boots and consultant say if you like.

Yes as I've titrated down the more I tense side effects have gone
One thing I won't miss is the smell of the alcohol wipes, I have to put Vicks under my nose now otherwise it makes me vomit.
Have no idea why! Maybe association with the 7.5 dose? I also can't watch other people administering it (on FB/ig reels), it also makes me feel sick as a dog.
