Mounjaro - how many cals do you manage per day?

Halycon · 05/02/2025 21:33

God I’m struggling to get calories in.

I’ve just gone up to 5mg for the first time and my suppression is huge.

Yesterday I had one meal all day, about 450 cals.

Today, I’ve had one meal and managed about 250 cals.
My average calories per day is probably 400ish.

I cannot eat another bite. It’s making me feel like I’m going to explode.

How many calories are you managing on mounjaro?

1200 a day

I am trying to eat 3 small meals like I will post MJ

Reallyyyyyy · 05/02/2025 21:38

I am the same one 2.5 week 3. If i try and eat any more, I will be sick. Not sure if it gets easier as time goes on.

HellofromJohnCraven · 05/02/2025 21:55

I do 16/8 as that's what I'll be doing to maintain
Typically
Protein yog at 12.30 ish with inulin powder stirred in. Helps with the constipation! 82 cals
Either soup or spud for lunch/ about 230 cals
Dinner at 6.30-7 450 ish cals
Another yoghurt to follow 82 cals
Sometimes I have a small bowl of Cornflakes as well

Ahardyfool · 05/02/2025 22:03

I’m week 2 on 2.5mg and the biggest calorie day was almost 1100 cals and that was at the end of the week, and had to slightly force myself because other days were between 400 and 600 cals and I’m losing too fast. I am secretly pleased but know I shouldn’t be so am trying hard to keep cals up because I don’t want to have drapey skin, hair loss or gallstones and pancreatitis.
In case you are wondering how I achieved the 1100 calorie day (other than the fact I tried to eat the most on the days of lesser suppression, i.e. just as the week’s dose was wearing off) my advice would be to eat the smallest sized foods (or liquids) with the highest calorie and nutrient profile (perhaps a soup with yogurt stirred through it or a protein shake from a bottle if you’re not bothered about the processed food side of things (I personally am a bit) and eat as many times as possible in small quantities.
This is not dissimilar to how I gained weight in the first place (I’m not a big meal sort of person) so there is an irony in the fact it has now become more challenging. Bit of cheese here, snacky thing there. You’d think I was a pro at getting calories in without noticing myself actually eating…oh, wait… 😉

KitsyWitsy · 05/02/2025 22:06

I probably have about 3 days at 500 calls but then have more later in the week. I don’t track calls at all. I do try and eat as much as I can.

Flipslop · 05/02/2025 22:09

I’ve just started a couple of days ago, how come you have to have a certain amount of calories per day? Excuse my ignorance on that, it’s something I haven’t read xx

Your bodily functions need calories…

MsPug · 05/02/2025 22:11

There's this cottage cheese longley or langley and I stir it in my soups, have it by the spoon, with anything basically and it really helps keep my protein and calories up. For those who say yuk honestly try it it's very good

Glorybox2025 · 05/02/2025 22:14

If you're unable to eat more than a few hundred calories a day then you're on too high a dose. Come back down to 2.5, or even 1.25 if that doesn't help. You shouldn't go below TDEE - 1000

SupermarketMum · 05/02/2025 22:16

Oh wow I’m tempted to move to mounjaro. I’m on wegovy and just started 1mg, I’m struggling to lose weight… I still have a lot of food cravings and don’t really feel full…

Gcsunnyside23 · 05/02/2025 22:44

I was on 5mg last week and decided this week to only take half as it was too much last week

3wDavid · 06/02/2025 05:41

In my most suppressed when I was also losing the quickest, I aimed for 1100-1200 a day. I’d lose 2-4 lbs a week.
Now that I’m almost at goal and decided not to move up a dose, I have significantly less suppression and I am for 1300-1400. I lose about 1-2 lbs every 10-ish days.

You need to eat. I’d argue anything below about 1000 calories is too little unless you’re a baby bird.
If suppression is too much, speak with your provider about dosing down.

ThatSchoolOfficeLady · 06/02/2025 06:08

Week 15, never gone above 2.5, eat 1500 to 1600 calories every day. After the first two weeks of bigger losses I lose 1lb or 1.5lb every week. I want this to be forever though, so no big shocks to my body and a sustainable set of changes. I'm trying to focus on nutrition and really enjoying food and plan to gentle transition at target by eating an extra 100 calories a day till I maintain steadily and titrating down gradually until there is no Mounjaro in my system.

GingerGirl4549 · 06/02/2025 06:35

If you cant eat then drink your calories. You need at least 1000 a day. If you eat less now, your weight loss will slow too soon, your muscle mass will disappear, loose skin etc. You need protein.

Shrinkingrose · 06/02/2025 07:03

About 1400 and I lose about 2lbs a week. You will be very unwell if this continues, losing both muscle and hair, so i would titrate back down if it doesn’t resolve.

Morrisons, Asda, Iceland or Home Bargains are the shops that sell Longley farms cottage cheese and it is amazing. You need the full fat versions, it's full of protein and nothing like the horrible lumpy sour stuff that every other Cottage Cheese is made of.

I eat around 1200-1400 calories a day. I know it can be difficult to eat a lot when on Mounjaro but it's important to try for a varied and sufficient diet. Yes you'll probably lose weight quicker if you eat 500 calories a day but you'll also have your hair falling out, muscle wasting (remember your heart is a muscle), skin and nails will suffer too.

Make sure that everything you do eat and drink has nutritional value and add in a multivitamin to supplement.

I've been on MJ since beginning of Sept last year, consistently lose about 2lb a week and have lost a total of 47lb so far.

unsync · 06/02/2025 07:29

I eat about 1600 and lose a kg a week. You just have to do it or you will destroy your lean body mass and make yourself ill. If you can't manage that, you need to stop taking the medication.

If you have overhauled your diet and are exercising regularly, it's not that difficult.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/02/2025 07:36

800 a day (any more than that I put on weight, I'm short)

On the last day before injection I eat 1000, the first day only 500 so it all balances out to 800 a day over the week. This leads to a half pound loss on average a week.

Your TDEE absolutely CANNOT be 800 a day. Even if you're 4 foot tall. I don't think you can be counting your calories correctly, either that or you need to see a doctor urgently.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/02/2025 07:56

I've had bariatric surgery and I don't miscount calories. Before all the weight loss interventions for the best part of 30 years I ate 1000-1200 calories a day - and I gradually over those years put on 5 stone.

I eat exactly the same thing every day. Protein and Greek salad, half a baked potato.

Thankfully due to MJ I am now able to stick to 800 calories.

If you tdee was 800 then you’d not lose weight eating 800. You’d maintain, half a pound a week indicates this means your tdee is 1050.

Thanks everyone, I think I need to go back to 2.5mg next week and see if it helps. I was managing a bit more on 2.5mg, though nothing like some of the numbers others are managing.

Then I’d consider coming off it, or going below 2.5, as I think for me, losing my hair would not be worth it,

Feb2025start · 06/02/2025 09:03

I'm having between 800-1000 per day. I can't eat large portions of anything without feeling sick (though tbh even before MJ I was a grazer and rarely finished a 'normal' sized meal) so am having more like 5/6 small portions throughout the day and making sure to choose foods with high levels of nutrients/protein/good fats etc.

Eg yesterday I had:

  • Small bowl of porridge with mixed seeds
  • Small bowl of mixed berries with Greek yoghurt
  • Small portion of homemade veggie dhal with wholegrain rice
  • A Ryvita with cottage cheese and side salad
  • One egg omelette with veggies and some lean ham with salad
  • A few grapes

I find little and often is much easier to manage if your aim is to up your calorie intake.

Halycon · 06/02/2025 09:08

I think I’ve maybe worked out where I might be going wrong. People are clearly eating small and having some lighter foods.

My one meal a day is always dinner and I tend to go for something like salmon for protein, a little bit of rice or pasta and a mixture of various vegetables. Maybe it’s too heavy all at once.

I always, always feel sick and bloated after I’ve eaten. Almost like I’ve eaten a full three course meal.

Will try lighter, smaller foods today and see if it ups my overall intake.
