Mounjaro - how many cals do you manage per day?

God I’m struggling to get calories in.

I’ve just gone up to 5mg for the first time and my suppression is huge.

Yesterday I had one meal all day, about 450 cals.

Today, I’ve had one meal and managed about 250 cals.
My average calories per day is probably 400ish.

I cannot eat another bite. It’s making me feel like I’m going to explode.

How many calories are you managing on mounjaro?

Well yes Confused hence why I put on weight at 1000-1200

I am intending to lose weight which is why I'm taking MJ which allows me to stick to 800 calories

I will have to stay on (a lower dose) of MJ for life so that I maintain at 1000 calories. Without MJ I'd be starving at 1000 calories.

You'll find it'll get easier to eat as time goes on BUT be careful, I lost around 1/3 of my whole hair by under eating and it's still not growing back almost a year later.

Thank you. I’m sorry that happened to you, it must be very difficult to manage. I know I’d struggle with that.

Usually 1200. 5ft 1 and in my fifties. Eat good whole foods. Lost 32 pounds since early September. I wouldn’t want to lose any faster at all. Am still struggling with hair loss.

StayingHealthy · 06/02/2025 14:55

That really doesn't sound enough. I'd go back down to 2.5mg and then eat little and often rather than attempting full meals.... Good luck

Saggyknickers · 06/02/2025 22:09

I'm on 2.5 and struggling to eat 1000 per day atm (my cutting tdee is around 1340 to lose 2lbs a week - I'm 5"8") I've been having a large handful of almonds and a couple of chicken legs as snacks in the evening this week to try and up my protein and calories. I'm scared of my hair falling out.

I do still get cravings for cake and chocolate but they're easy to ignore.

Not sure what to do about moving up to 5mg next week.

Reallyyyyyy · 08/02/2025 13:17

@Saggyknickers just stay on 2.5 you don't have to move up. I'm staying on it. I have lost 1.1 stone in 3 weeks and staying on 5 after my 4th injection

My friend is the same, she was already slim-ish and got the injections and is now in a full on eating disorder (she has history) and her hair is falling out. She is loving how she can stick to so little calories, loving the fast weight loss but the muscle is going too and she looks a decade older

I really think these jabs are amazing when needed but 4/500 calories is so unhealthy for the body to function.

omg I am in 1800-2200 cals a day! and steadily losing but i do exercise weights quite a bit and am bigger so im happy enough! I cannot fathom existing on 500cals a day but hence why my goal is bigger than some starting weights on here!

Don't feel alone! Lots of us have lower suppression and are eating similar amounts! I'm on somewhere between 1690-1900 a day (not counting as I refuse!) and losing 0.5 lb a week average which is perfectly fine with me. Honestly I'm not far off my maintenance weight so more than happy for weight loss to be slow as I've avoided loose skin or muscle loss so it's been a huge success for me.

UtterlyQuackers · 08/02/2025 17:21

Guys to lose weight safely you really need to eat, especially if you are exercising.

If you can not eat, please seek advice from your provider.

Malnutrition can lead to osteoporosis, hair loss and other things. Please be safe and good luck on your journey x

If you're unable to eat more than a few hundred calories a day then you're on too high a dose. Come back down to 2.5, or even 1.25 if that doesn't help. You shouldn't go below TDEE - 1000

Hi might be a stupid question but with the 2.5 pen would you just be able to do half a dose and have 1.25 that way?

30 clicks for half the dose, instead of the full dose which is 60 clicks

maz99 · 10/03/2026 01:04

@Glorybox2025 I think you mean BMR instead of TDEE

Questions1234 · 10/03/2026 06:20

Another one coming on to say make sure you are all eating enough - some of the amounts here are awfully low.

The “Fat Science” podcast is brilliant at explaining how eating too little (especially when on GLP1s) is damaging to your health, and means you will struggle to maintain weight loss long term.

I’ve lost 53kg since Jan 25. I do my best to hit my 30g fibre and 1.5g-2g per kg of protein per day - looking at my stats over the last month that’s an average of 1600 kcals and 120g protein, and that’s challenging so think some of you on low calories will be way way way off.

I also resistance train and try to generally be more active, but make sure that I’m fuelling that appropriately.

I don’t want to sound preachy, but really do look into the science between the hunger/famine pathways in the brain and the dangers of muscle loss.

Mirrorxxx · 10/03/2026 06:32

Wow the people eating under 1000 calorie s day are so unhealthy. You need to eat. You’ll never maintain weight loss like that.

No I meant TDEE
BMR - 1000 would be insanely low. Nobody really needs to know their BMR as it's not the number you should be working from.

Brightlittlecanary · 10/03/2026 07:10

Wow, that’s extreme, you need to fix that fast. You will lose your muscle and hair. And quickly too.

I was about 1200 cals a day during weight loss. Lost about a pound and a half a week, now in maintenance on 5mg and do about 2000. I prioritised protein an strength trained throughput and protecting muscle is critical, otherwise you won’t like what you see when you hit goal, flat arse, saggy boobs, wrinkled skin etc, I look fit and toned wirh muscle definition, lost 6 and a half stone in total.

i ate every couple of hours, a couple of eggs, some fruit, a tuna salad etc.

FTMaz · 10/03/2026 07:54

I know this thread is about calories so hope no one minds me posting this here. I had my first dose of 2.5 last Monday and my second dose last night. On Sunday I got an ache in my shoulder and down my arm which is still there. I know this can be a sign of gallbladder issue but surely not from the first dose! Has anyone else had this? Also this morning after taking my second dose last night I feel absolutely awful, really tired, bad stomach and like I could just go straight back to bed. Is this normal early on?

undercats · 10/03/2026 08:55

I’m eating around 1800 now and losing 0.5 ish a week. I lost 6 and a half stone before maintaining (not intentionally) for about 6 weeks then the scales started to move again, just more slowly. I struggled to eat in the early days and stayed on 2.5mg for 15 months. It gets easier, to the point t where is could easily eat far more but I choose not to (thanks MJ) - I hated the strong suppression and much prefer to be in control of what I’m eating. I eat a healthy balanced diet now.

TDEE is your maintenance calories - the amount to stay at current weight.
It's where you create the deficit (minus 500 calories or more) to lose weight.

Also, people should actually know their BMR because eating a lot lower than this amount for a long period of time causes issues with the body functioning optimally.

A simple Google search can confirm this.

namechange0998776554799000 · 10/03/2026 11:16

Height makes a huge difference. I'm very short, mostly housebound/inactive and only need about 1,000 calories. I manage my dose to stick to somewhere around this - if I can't manage to eat that much, I would reduce the dose. I find suppression is very high after a dose increase and fur the first few days after injecting, then it decreases. I'm fine with having a few days of very low calorie intake, a few days with higher over a week, trying to average a bit over 1,000.

People who are taller or do more exercise need much higher calorie intake.

Yeah I'm aware of that
not sure what in any of my responses made you think I don't understand this or that I meant BMR but I'll assume it was my poor communication somewhere
