80kg (12.5 stone?) down.
The first 68.4kg took 2 years and 4 months and happened as a totally unexpected side effect of following the eating recommendations in the Zoe food science podcasts.
The more body mass I lost the fewer calories I needed, and what had been a steady weight loss of 2-3kg/month (after couple of spectacular first months) slowed to 0.5kg towards the end of the second year. I tried to reduce my calories down to 2000/day but felt hungry all the time and began obsessing about what I was going to eat next and what I wouldn't be able to eat.
Starting Mounjaro last June put a stop to that and has allowed me to shed another 11.6kg, giving me confidence that I will be able to reach and maintain a healthy BMI.
Last month I reduced my calories to 1700 (which would have been impossible without the jab) and had lost 4kg when I weighed myself four weeks later. That's a bit too fast so I've increased back up to 1800. I don't want my metabolism to flip into starvation survival mode, so I eat as many calories as I can while still losing a bit of weight, and every week or so I don't restrict my calories at all and scoff between 2200 and 2500 which keeps my metabolism stoked.
I lost so much weight the first 18 months that my skin was hanging in folds and flapping disconcertingly. I worried that 67 might be too old and my skin to inelastic to adapt, but the dangly bits, elephant knees, droopy jowls and chin wattles have already improved noticeably from when the rate of weight loss slowed to between 1 and 2 kg/month. Giving me hope that I'll look a bit less like a bulldog crossed with a turkey once my weight stabilises.
Compared to the huge losses other people report when they start weight loss injections my average of just over 1.5kg/month may seem low. Personally I'm delighted with the steady progress, especially considering I'm in my 35th consecutive month of weight loss and only 13kg away from normal weight.
Another 13kg to go to reach BMI 24.5. I'm 67 years old so the upper end of normal BMI is going to be the healthiest option for me.
I'm not in any rush, and hope to reach that goal by summer next year. I've already gone from a size 34/36 to a size 18. My favourite clothes grew flappy and started to fall off. With a centimetre or two of girth vanishing each month there's no point in investing in expensive high quality stuff. I'm longing for the day when my weight stabilises and I can start buying nice things again.
