Hello
I've been taken mounjaro for a few months and loving it. I've stayed on a 2.5mg dose the whole time. No plans to increase.

I learnt about the extra dose at the end of the pen. I have been buying 5mg pens and just doing 30 clicks instead of 60 on the dial so getting about 8 or 9 doses from 5mg pen.

I bought insulin syringes to extract the last does. I googled and it said 1ml was 1mg. I drew out what I could from the last of the pen and it was 1ml so I just thought I'd have less this week and see how I get on. I think now I should have only taken 0.3ml!!

Has anyone accidentally taken more than they should? I feel okay at the moment but it was only a couple of hours ago.

This is my first post but I've found all the threads really helpful. Thank you.

Of course it will still work. Why do you think maintenance doses are a thing?

maintenace Means not to lose weight.,I’m not sure she wants to maintain.

Eh? I'm talking about the people who are saying she won't be able to go back to a lower dose now because it won't work. Of course lower doses will still work.

What’s the point moving up the doses then? Is it because it STOPS WORKING?! Grin

I don’t know about maintenance doses as I don’t think that many people are trying to maintain on this drug yet but I imagine that the OP is probably wanting to lose weight not maintain just yet. Therefore, after being on a high dose, obviously a low dose is not going to be as effective.

People move up doses when they want stronger appetite suppression and greater weight loss. The lower dose doesn't stop working for you just because you've been on a higher dose.

Maintenance doses are for people who no longer need to lose weight but still want/need some appetite suppression to stop them from regaining weight. Hence why people who have reached their goal weight are prescribed a lower dose.

Are you on them, one of the ones where it keeps working for you ar a low dose and for some odd reason think this is the case for everyone? Or are you not on them and have no idea?

I am on Mounjaro and have been for months. I'm also a nurse who works with patients on this med and others so I know how this stuff works. How about you?

I really hope that’s not true, as if it is, you need to go into work today and ask for some more training immediately as you do not understand the drugs.

LegoTherapy · 30/01/2025 07:49

Is one of the side effects snarky grumpiness? Seems to affect a few posters like that.

Well? What are your qualifications that allow you to confidently say that no one can go back down to a lower dose after taking a higher dose one time?

You did. You literally said "the other issue is now you’ve taken such a big dose,it is likely 2.5 will have no effect, as your tolerance level will be huge."

Are you serious? Why are you arguing with me saying that 2.5mg will still work for her if you agree with it (despite telling her it wont work)?

Kitsy also said some shite about how the drug stop working and you have to move up.

Did you learn about drug tolerance in nursing school?

You know when they say "build up tolerance" by starting on a low dose they're talking about getting your body used to the having the drug in your system to minimise side effects right? Because if you start on 10mg you will shit your brains out. Hence why you start on 2.5mg and keep going until you find the dose that gives you the effect you want.

The OP taking a higher dose ONCE has not rendered 2.5mg ineffective.

Can you even see what a contradictory statement that is?

HollyKnight · 30/01/2025 08:33

Mumsnet really needs to ban threads like this where people talk about how they abuse drugs and randoms give them inaccurate medical advice. It is so irresponsible.

honeslry this is cringy, it simply reads like you couldn’t think of a valid argument so decided it should be banned.

What is wrong with you? Being able to tolerate a drug is not the same thing as the drug "stops working".

KitsyWitsy · 30/01/2025 08:41

You’re contradicting yourself.

When you tolerate a drug, you need more of it to get the same effect. It won’t keep working in the same way. The OP might get away with it, but I think she will need to go up after such a large dose.

5hell · 30/01/2025 08:54

the word tolerance can be used in more than one way, eg:

"i can't tolerate this drug" = the side effects mean taking this is unsuitable for me

"i'm building tolerance to this" = become capable of continued subjection to (a drug, toxin, or environmental condition) without adverse reaction.

tolerance does not necessarily mean resistance, which I think is what you're thinking of @KitsyWitsy

Sure, but with mounjaro it does, or no one would move up. As you’d continue to have the same effects of 2.5 as you did when you first took it.

KitsyWitsy · 30/01/2025 09:07

I’m talking about tolerance in the medical sense.

From chat gpt

Tolerance and resistance both refer to reduced effects of a substance, but they have different meanings:
Tolerance happens when the body adapts to a drug over time, requiring higher doses to achieve the same effect. It’s common with painkillers, sedatives, and stimulants.
Resistance usually refers to microorganisms (like bacteria or viruses) or cancer cells becoming immune to drugs, making treatments like antibiotics or chemotherapy less effective.

In short, tolerance is about the body’s reduced response to a drug, while resistance is about a disease or organism no longer responding to treatment.

No one is disagreeing, but the thread discussion is about mounjaro and resistance as the op took so much. The poster was using the term in that context.

@Givingitago99 How have you been today? I have been thinking about you and hoping you have dodged any bad side effects.

Thanks for checking in. I'm absolutely fine thanks. Bit of a funny Monday as I said but okay after that. Just having to make myself eat protein shakes! 2.5mg pen ordered for Monday. I have found 2.5mg fine for months for steady loss and I seem to be lucky that I haven't ever really had any of the unwanted side effects so I'm fairly confident it'll be okay for me to stay at that level as I'm not far off goal weight anyway. Fingers crossed.
