Oh dear - I think I've injected too much

Hello
I've been taken mounjaro for a few months and loving it. I've stayed on a 2.5mg dose the whole time. No plans to increase.

I learnt about the extra dose at the end of the pen. I have been buying 5mg pens and just doing 30 clicks instead of 60 on the dial so getting about 8 or 9 doses from 5mg pen.

I bought insulin syringes to extract the last does. I googled and it said 1ml was 1mg. I drew out what I could from the last of the pen and it was 1ml so I just thought I'd have less this week and see how I get on. I think now I should have only taken 0.3ml!!

Has anyone accidentally taken more than they should? I feel okay at the moment but it was only a couple of hours ago.

This is my first post but I've found all the threads really helpful. Thank you.

What WOULD actually be helpful with regard to actual safety around taking this would be access to regular checkups and blood work to show whether or not our liver is working overtime, etc. They won't be suggesting that though, because they still want to have control over prescribing (and charging a big markup for) this drug and they definitely do not want to suggest that patients might actually need medical supervision.

It is a private prescription, not NHS. Therefore we, as private patients paying privately, would have to pay privately for private blood tests. How many of us would do that if it was suggested to us? -I can guarantee that these forums would be filled with "they are doing it to gouge yet more money out of us not because they care about our safety AND they are charging a big markup blah irrational blah".

There is nothing whatsoever stopping anyone from getting a full set of blood tests privately, and paying someone to interpret the results for you. There are 100s of clinics that do exactly that.

The thing about this though is that it feels as if it's mostly to bring business back to the high street (more expensive) pharmacies/ weight loss clinics rather than having people buying from cheaper online pharmacies. Because having consultations with a pharmacist won't really do anything beyond them being able to see that someone is obese and wants to take this medication.

None of this will stop people from buying prefilled syringes filled with whatever from Tash's Lashes because it's much better than 'the internet', and as has already been noted, also will not stop people from not realising that mg of this medication are not equal to mls and overdosing the 5th dose.

Edited

The consultations, which won’t happen, the logistics will be too big and stall roll out and they wish to avoide that, would be virtual not in person. So wouldn’t imoact high street, Christ can you imagine the logistics, there is what 600k folks on them, increasing every day, 8 more drugs in testing, 400 hospitalised, all due to the runs or whatever, no deaths,

16.5 million in the us on it, 274 deaths not one linked to correct use of the drugs all down to fakes or reckless usage,

the stats are too low, no one is going to recommend investing billions into 2o min consultations, due to some idiots.

Waaay too easy to get mj. I was on it, literally just below the 30 bmi, I held something heavy to take it over. It could be anyone's feet on those scales !
For the record it made me seriously depressed so I came off it for my own mental healths sake. But I do think it's too easy to lie and get atm. Yep I'll get bashed on here but I'm being honest to show how easy it is to obtain, and I'm one of many who will have done the exact same !

I assume you had to submit a photo of your body shape too? As you were "just below" BMI 30, you must have generally looked Obese, so they didn't feel the need to question your scales photo.

AddersAtDawn · 27/01/2025 20:56

I don't know about video consulations. Sounds more like an IQ test would be more useful...

willquestionwith · 27/01/2025 20:58

@CatsorDogsrule yeah I submitted a photo, and they then asked for more, so I then up slides a pic of my belly, that's where all my weight is. So I don't look obese, but have a rounded tummy due to pcos

Well with PCOS you should have been eligible at BMI 27, so no need to have lied.

For what it's worth, my suggestion of blood tests was just to say, blood tests would be something that ACTUALLY would improve patient safety, if that's what they were actually interested in.

But they are not. I don't believe this 20 minute consultation thing is coming from a place of real concern, I think it's safety theatre, much like how we all need to throw our water bottles away at the airport.

willquestionwith · 27/01/2025 21:10

@CatsorDogsrule Really ? I thought it was just pre diabetes or high blood pressure ?

A quick Google shows that PCOS counts. This is from Asda.

IwasatMandStoday · 27/01/2025 21:23

I hope your ok 🤞

willquestionwith · 27/01/2025 21:35

@CatsorDogsrule oh!! Well that's annoying lol. I wonder why nhs don't offer it for pcos ! It's proven pcos makes it harder to lose weight

Nothanksiwillwalk · 27/01/2025 22:16

You'll be ok OP. We were using vials for weeks when I was a nursing student many years ago.

There are obv stricter controls over medicines now which is good, I wouldn't carry on taking expired doses - even though there isn't any evidence to say about bacterial count post 30 days. It could be fine, it could not. We do just do not know, so best not to take the risk.

Regarding the increased dose. I do also take the bonus dose. There is usually 0.8iu left - which from a 5mg syringe is 6.6mgs.

You'll get a decent suppression from tomorrow night onwards but you shouldn't be ill (unless you are very sensitive to the drug).

The half life is 5 days so you'll already have older doses in your system and it'll take a few days to be excreted so you'll have a good loss this week.....

Don't beat yourself up but it is a lesson, this is a powerful drug (its made me slim which is a feat in itself). Just be careful with your health and don't take anymore risks x

But these are not vials. And they are not used by putting a new, sterile syringe and needle in every time.

They are Kwikpens. They are used by inserting a needle and then putting that needle in your body. it is a completely different category of risk. There are photos on the Reddit forums from people who have had visible blood wash back into their pen - and that will only be the ones where there was enough for it to be visible..

Away. She's not responsible for that or the fact you're obese. Talk about random blaming.

You'll be fine, Op. ignore the weird haters

Of course she’s not responsible for me being obese ffs. However the media and threads on here are forever scaremongering about these meds when the real problem is idiotic people not using them as prescribed. She probably will be fine on an individual basis and I hope so, but it’s this kind of idiotic behaviour that is going to lead to a clampdown.

Tubetrain · 27/01/2025 22:50

access to regular checkups and blood work to show whether or not our liver is working overtime

Absolutely no benefit to this more than once a year or so, which your GP will do if your BMI is >35 and the first one is abnormal.

This is the issue I think , people are so emotive about these drugs, panicking, posting extreme things, believing stuff they read and panicking again.

and it’s why the media post so much emotive shite, it’s clickbait,

there will be no clamp down. Simply as the big money pharmacies have tried to put the online ones out of this game, and make more money out of it , demanding consultations to a level they know the online can’t compete, doesn’t mean they will be stupid enough to do that. They won’t. It is laughable.

the drugs and misuse of them are no different here than any other major country where they are available. The hospital stats show it is tiny tiny percentage of signficant issues. No one will say yeah let’s clamp down due to that and put the online guys out of the game.

it is purely a money grab play by the big guys. Capitalism at work, politics, that will fade away,

Givingitago99 · 28/01/2025 09:54

I've survived the night!

Thanks to everyone who commented be that a bolloc*ing, words of support or some technical info.

I was very tired yesterday and had heartburn after my protein shake, if that was related to the drug, its new to me as I've never had any unwanted side effects before. And its confirmed that 2.5mg is just fine for me for the whole time.

As I say, lesson learned and 2.5mg pen ordered as I need a new pen. Oddly, they asked me why I wanted a lower does, they've never asked me why I was only ordering every 8 weeks or so as some of you mentioned!

This has been a really interesting thread and thanks to everyone who contributed.

Op it will reach its peak by Thursday so just keep watching hopefully all fine.

the other issue is now you’ve taken such a big dose,it is likely 2.5 will have no effect, as your tolerance level will be huge. Which maybe not noticeable for a up to 3 weeks as the big dose exits your system, but then when it does an only a small amount in there, it is likely to habe a major impact.

KitsyWitsy · 28/01/2025 13:52

2.5 unlikely to work now.

HollyKnight · 28/01/2025 13:57

Of course it will still work. Why do you think maintenance doses are a thing?

Cantbesure · 28/01/2025 14:11

I'm glad you are ok @Givingitago99 i was feeling quite worried for you!

Cornishbelle · 28/01/2025 14:20

@Givingitago99 How have you been today? I have been thinking about you and hoping you have dodged any bad side effects.
