I thought I would be a fast responder – but I am not!

I assumed this because I am unusually sensitive to any medication and have to start really at a very low dose.

I have been on Mourjana for two months now, currently at 5 mg, and my average weight loss is less than a pound a week. For a few weeks, I lost nothing at all.

So, it turns out I may be in fact a slow responder, or just an average responder! Can anyone relate?

PS. I didn’t get much in the way of side-effects either, which was a surprise, although I have been very conservative in terms of micro-dosing.

to add, I have 2 to 3 stone to lose overall.

What was starting BMI?
Are you peri/post menopausal?
What's your calorie deficit?
Have you added in exercise?
Have you increased your water?

Mounjaro doesn't work in isolation, it helps us to stick to a calorie controlled diet longer term so that we are able to reduce weight by slowing digestion, making us feel fuller for longer and increasing insulin sensitivity so we process sugar better and are less like to store it as new fat.

ThatCoralShark · 25/01/2025 12:22

I am not sure what you mean by being conservative on micro dosing, but if you’re not taking it correctly and small amounts that would be why you don’t respond well.

PinkPin · 25/01/2025 12:33

eg. Micro-dosing for me now is 2 x 2.5 mg per week, so I’m still taking 5 mg. Some people stay on 2.5 mg or 5 mg and lose a lot. So I’m asking them really or people who needed to go on a higher dose than they expected ….

OP posts:
PinkPin · 25/01/2025 12:35

It’s a more subtle question and I have just wondered about other peoples experience. Not really looking for dietary advice or instructions.

Who knows what you mean by micro-dosing, since it isn't a term that would cover anything that a user could do with a kwikpen.

If you mean you have taken smaller doses than prescribed (which is NOT micro-dosing) then ho hum, you cannot conclude anything.

PinkPin · 25/01/2025 12:37

Yes you can micro dose with a kwik pen.

OP posts:
IrisPallida · 25/01/2025 12:37

Why are you basing your dosage on what 'some people do'?

Please get yourself off social media and the need to do what others do, and actually use the drug as prescribed!

IrisPallida · 25/01/2025 12:38

PinkPin · 25/01/2025 12:37

Yes you can micro dose with a kwik pen.

No. You can't. You can take doses not according to presccription which is what you are doing.

You have absorbed a lot of trash and incorrectly used buzzwords, that is all.

PinkPin · 25/01/2025 12:40

A reminder of how the bossy-boots come out on any diet thread on MN!

This is a question about slow and fast responders. But I’m hiding it now because of the aggressive / patronising posters.

Right. Let's look at actual facts.

Based on this 2021 study into the use of GLP1 peptides for weight lost outcomes they classified a 'fast responder as someone who after 12 weeks lost >5% of their bodyweight and 'super responders' achieving >10% of bodyweight in the same timeframe.

Those who did not achieve >5% were considered low responders.

What was your starting weight and how much have you lost?

I'm not what I would consider an ultra responder to medications, have been on MJ since 5th Sept and have lost over 3 stone.

On average I'm losing 2lb a week.

I am taking it as prescribed, tracking my calories so I eat below my TDEE, drinking 2lts water a day and doing 3 x 30 minute exercise sessions a week,

So far so good, still feel hunger around meal times but not thinking about food constantly which is nice. No significant side effects although did need to add 2 x psyllium husk capsules a day to lunch to prevent constipation.

IrisPallida · 25/01/2025 12:43

So until you do 12 weeks at a normal dosing regime so that you can compare yourself properly, you cannot say you are a slow responder.

IrisPallida · 25/01/2025 12:46

Bossy boots only when they are not telling you to 'micro-dose' and all the other SM bollocks?

I repeat, the definition of a fast responder is someone who after 12 weeks has lost more than 5% of their bodyweight.

cloudjumper · 25/01/2025 12:46

The issues with the dodgy dosing aside, you need to look at what you are eating. Are you in a calorie deficit? This is ultimately what makes you loose weight, mounjaro just makes it easier to stick to it.

But I can only echo what others have said, start dosing correctly as per the prescription and see what happens. It might be that you need to go up a dose.

ThatCoralShark · 25/01/2025 13:19

Op can you really not see the correlation with you taking small doses and the fact you’re not responding? So with the half life you will barely not go above 3 at any time and have not even taken the first therapeutic dose at this point, which is 5.

2,5 is just initiate treatment. I’m stunned you can’t see it. Yes some people do this. Some people also think the world is flat, and that elvis is alive nd works down the chippy.

such an odd thread. “I am a slow responder as I only take a small amount”

eh yes. That would be the case.

KitsyWitsy · 25/01/2025 13:22

The absolute stupidity I see on this board is killing me.

Try taking it as prescribed, and then form an opinion on how you respond.

I’m utterly bemused, imagine not following the guidelines, doing what you see on social media, thinking that folks on line know more than the scientists, and then proclaiming you’re a slow loser.

sure there maybe instances where micro dosing is a good idea, but we don’t have access to the full clinical trials over 15 years why this was not the preferred path, but one things for sure, this isn’t one of those instances.

Davros · 25/01/2025 13:27

My consultant told me that I'm "resistant" and increased the dose. I'm on 10mg now and losing but quite slowly which is fine with me

Bluenose1966 · 25/01/2025 13:52

@PinkPin

I lost 25lb on 2.5mg in 10 weeks before then increasing to 3.75mg, then 5mg.
I didn’t want to risk straight to 5mg as had been getting diarrhoea.
I have now lost 32lb in 14 weeks.
If you are tolerating 2.5mg x 2 per week ok you may want to increase to one 5mg injection per week.

Although I have been delighted with my weight loss from what I have read the most body fat we can lose in a week is 2lb at the very most. Therefore additional weight loss is likely to be muscle which is not good for any of us.
I have been eating a high protein diet and weight training to try and maintain my muscle.

Yes, but you’d not declare yourself a slow responder.

HellofromJohnCraven · 25/01/2025 13:58

I lose a pound a week on average. I started 8th August at 13st. I am now 10st 7 lb.
I have stuck to 1000/1200 cals a day as I am a shortie.

MounjaroOnMyMind · 25/01/2025 13:59

I thought I would be a fast responder, too. I've lost over 3.5 stone in seven months and when I look at my notes I can see sometimes I've gone for three weeks without a loss, but then other weeks it's around a pound a week. It does all come off in the end, though, so just keep going.

HellofromJohnCraven · 25/01/2025 14:01

I am on 7.5mg and have followed the plan. Decided against 10mg as I'm getting good appetite suppression and didn't want any more side effects
