Can you get weight loss injections if you're not very overweight?

Just wonder how it works. I'm a stone heavier than I'd like to be, but still within the normal weight BMI. I've tried diets but nothing seems to shift things now I'm over 50.

It's be good to be able to have some help and would love to try the injections. Any advice?

in short no op. You can’t. It’s 30 bmi or 27 with weight related health issues, or certain ethinicities

surely you’d seriously not consider taking a serious prescribed med to lose a stone.

Really think about that. Have more sense.

MajorCarolDanvers · 14/01/2025 13:05

as pp says no reputable provider will prescribe if your bmi is less than 30
or 27 with medical conditions

BashfulClam · 14/01/2025 13:06

Does your weight impact your health or mobility? If not then the stretched NHS won’t prescribe it. You could look into it privately. It’s not a magic wand though and users can rebound if they don’t take care of their diet afterwards.

Good grief.

the nhs don’t even prescribe if you’re seriously obese, very few can get them and it’s after a year of tier 3 weight loss clinic. Have you not seen the news.

and she can’t get it privately. We have already stated the prescribing criteria.

I said she can look into it not that she’d get it. Good grief indeed.

The NHS won't prescribe in nearly all cases, even when you are morbidly obese with weight related health conditions. The OP cannot look into it privately, as private prescriptions must also abide by the prescribing guidelines. The OP is not obese and doesn't meet the prescribing criteria.

Private providers operate within the same criteria
Of course you won't be prescribed this if you have a normal BMI!

MyDeepZebra · 14/01/2025 13:11

I know people who lied and got it from dodgy online sellers. They look awful...gone from size 8/10 to 4 and they've had terrible side effects.

I wouldn't recommend it. I lost a stone in 3 weeks and kept it off on the Fast800 and 5:2.

RampantIvy · 14/01/2025 13:16

One of DD's old workmates has been obtaining weightless injections from a dodgy supplier and she looks terribly underweight and ill now. She is about 5'9" and wants to weigh 7 stone.

Don't do it.

I'm sure you can from an unscrupulous, unregulated provider. Properly prescribed though, no. The criteria is BMI of 30+ or 27+ with additional related health conditions.
It is medication for obesity. You aren't obese. You aren't even overweight. It is very disordered thinking to even consider taking prescription medication, with some potentially horrific side effects, because you want to drop a few pounds at an already healthy weight.

WeeOrcadian · 14/01/2025 13:24

DH is quite overweight and while he WAS prescribed them, they're like hen's teeth in our area and we simply couldn't get any pharmacy to fill the prescription

TR888 · 14/01/2025 13:24

Hi everyone, I didn't mean to upset anyone.

Thanks for the information and point taken.

Yep I did just over stone in 3 weeks calorie counting.

thesugarbumfairy · 14/01/2025 13:42

as others have said, no - OP.
Also you've said you've tried diets, but nothing seems to shift things. I think you may be misunderstanding how the drugs work. You still need to diet. They don't magically melt fat away. They are just a tool to help you manage your diet. Stick to it, as it were.
I am on mounjaro, but I have to stick to 1200 kcals a day in order to lose weight. and even then its trickling off how after being on if for 7 months, at half a pound a week now if I'm lucky (and I'm still technically obese because of my ethnicity/BMI) I'm 50 and the weight just wants to stick to me!

My top tips are simply - calorie deficit - track what goes in (I use nutracheck app) - try and change it up each day - so some days I'll eat more, some less - just balance it out. Also try to not eat too late in the evening.
Lots of water. I can't tank it - but I aim for 2L a day if poss.
More protein - I'm naturally a carb person but I am doing my best!
Exercise if poss. - I don't do a lot - I can't lose weight from exercise but I know its good for me and gets my heart rate up.
And finally - a little of what you fancy does you good. I just try to eat better most of the time but my food has to fit in with my life. So I took my kid for a McDonalds breakfast this morning because we had time to kill before his exam. I will include that cheesy bacon flatbread in my tracker. And I will not stress because I had a bit of processed food.
Best of luck.

TR888 · 14/01/2025 13:45

Thanks! To be honest, I'm not THAT bothered about my extra stone but it annoys me that I can't get rid of it.

I might give low carbing another go... but I find it makes me a little light-headed after a while. Maybe I just need to push through it.

Extra salt and electrolytes help a lot for the light headed phase. I also find I don't have to go too low.
100g of carbs is fine for me to get a great result.

taureni · 14/01/2025 14:00

Which ethnicities can get it with a bmi of 27, does anyone know?

South East Asian is one for sure, due to the increased risk of Diabetes.

Happyinarcon · 14/01/2025 14:31

What about if you’re not overweight but are pre diabetic?

You're a normal BMI. You don't need weight loss injections.

The “I am on mounjaro” part is the most important part of your post, by far! As for still “needing to diet” - that is extremely easy when you don’t feel hungry most of the time, and are full quickly when you do eat. I have been mounjaro and it was an absolute challenge to get even up to 1000 calories most of the time, as my appetite was gone.

What you are doing is great, but it’s a bit much to preach to the OP with “top tips”, when you are taking a drug that suppresses your appetite and she isn’t.

I’m sure that the OP knows what she should be doing, it’s just hard and that is why people struggle to lose weight, regardless of starting point.

HPandthelastwish · 14/01/2025 14:44

It's not a beauty treatment.

Yes, you'll be able to get some back alley stuff from someone unscrupulous but would you take any other drugs from an iffy place with no controls?

It's a serious medication with serious side effects, however those side effects are less concerning than the side effects of being very obese.
