Scared about weight loss drugs

Nicecuppatea2025 · 12/01/2025 00:14

I need to lose weight. 5 stone. I’m very fat. Would love to be able to tie my shoe laces without puffing.

I’ve read in the news about people dying from weight loss drugs. I’d love to give it a try but I’m shit scared very nervous about it.

Any thoughts? (Apologies for yet another weight loss jabs thread). And do I have to be referred by a doctor (I’m in the uk).

I've not heard of anyone dying except a nurse who had an underlying condition I think. I have heard of people becoming ill when they have taken it without being prescribed it personally. I wouldn't advise anyone to do that.

For me it's been a life changing, life-saving drug.

Fishandchipsareyum · 12/01/2025 00:32

Slimming world works a treat.

Gosh, really? I’d love to feel better. Do you feel any different to before?

Slimming world works a treat.

Have not tried slimming world. Just googled and there’s a group 0.3miles from my house!

Slimming world works a treat.

For some people, I stuck to it religiously and put weight on

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 12/01/2025 00:44

Slimming World didn't work for me either... but it does work for some. Always worth a go!

healthybychristmas · 12/01/2025 00:45

Slimming world relies on people not sticking to it and so returning. Whenever I did it I would find myself in a room with a lot of women who had been there tons and tons of different times. Every time they would lose a bit of weight then put on more. People used to keep hold of their old books and realised that in each one they weighed more than in the previous one

Nicecuppatea2025 · 12/01/2025 00:46

Would you try that first before injections?

I’ve tried dieting before but not very successfully.

People aren't dying from weight loss drugs. If there was a genuine issue then the medication would be withdrawn from use or severely restricted. You should base any personal medical decisions on genuine information not alarmist news stories that are designed to attract readers/clicks.

Slimming World may work for some, but for the most part they need repeat customers so it's not as effective as they claim. But give it a try if you like.

You don't have to be referred by a doctor to get a private prescription for weight loss injections. You apply online to a regulated and registered pharmacy and they make a decision if you're suitable for it. Then they prescribe it for you. You could give it a try and see how you get on, and you can stop taking it if you don't get on with it. It's not anything to be shit scared of.

healthybychristmas · 12/01/2025 00:46

Of course I feel better, I'm nearly four stone lighter. Everything is easier!

Nicecuppatea2025 · 12/01/2025 00:48

Wow that’s amazing!

Same here, exactly the same people joining year after year. And all the discussion amongst members about saving up sins for weekend blow outs and alcohol. It was dysfunctional

I've lost 7 stone on Mounjaro. I have lost weight before without drugs but not so easily and not so much weight. I think try other methods first if you haven't but no shame in the injections

MajorCarolDanvers · 12/01/2025 00:51

I’ve lost 3 stone so far over 5 months. I’ve had few side effects. Just a bit windy.

I still need to diet and exercise but my appetite is suppressed and good noise is gone so it’s achievable.

I’m aiming to lose another 2.5 stone.

onemorerose · 12/01/2025 00:52

No shame in the injections at all. But they possibly also rely on repeat customers. I’d love to take them but am also shit scared. When I asked my gp about them she said the weight will just come back on when you stop.

I guess that’s the same with any diet?

I had very bad side effects and had to stop taking them. It was a pity because I had high hopes but Mountjaro just did not agree with me at all. I wouldn't rule out trying Ozempic but for now I'm trying to use a mixture of calorie counting, reducing carbs and possibly intermittent fasting.

doisnore · 12/01/2025 00:57

OP my friend lost 5 stone last year through slimming world. She’s managed to more or less maintain her weight so far.

I lost 3 stone by eating less and walking more. It took me longer than she did though.

SilenceInside · 12/01/2025 00:58

Honestly don't know what people are shit scared about. I've been taking Mounjaro for 6 months and I haven't dropped off my perch just yet. I have lost 90 pounds though. It's better for my health to have lost that weight and whether or not I regain some or all of it when I stop taking the injections remains to be seen. I've got a decent amount left to lose before I get to that point yet.

A GP confidently putting a patient off losing weight by saying that it will all be regained is misguided. The risk of weight regain happens with all weight loss methods and a GP should know that.

onemorerose · 12/01/2025 01:17

Yes that’s what the gp meant, that it was just like all diets and when you stop you put it back on, if you go back to your old ways. We all know that’s true anyway. With the injections I’d would hope I would kick start a change in my way of eating and outlook re food being my treat. But I’ve a bit of health anxiety and I’d just feel worried that I was doing more harm to my body than I am already. And I haven’t properly tried any other weight loss method recently.

I've recently stopped and been ok thus far. However sadly people who lose weight usually do put it back on - regardless of how they lose it. People who have lost with weight loss injections are less likely than others to put it back on tho. So your gp is being very negative

Gettingslimmer · 12/01/2025 07:15

What news are you talking about, what people are dying? I think you need to evidence what you wrote there, as it will scare people.

sadly a nurse died in Scotland, it was not due to the drug, she was very ill due to other causes.

in America , with 16 million on, less than three hundred deaths, all due to using fakes or using recklessly (ie not in line with guidelines) not one person has died due to using correctly and when eligible.

That is a very fair point and you were right to pull me up on that. Yes it was the one you mentioned, that I read about most recently.

16 million on it in the US- wow.

I've read the article regarding the nurse in Scotland and can't see any reference to any underlying health conditions? He family stated she didn't have any.
