Second time round experiences in MJ?

I have posted about this previously but still no further forward. I did 3 weeks on 2.5 MJ last summer with zero side effects , lost a few pounds. However after week 3 injection I ended up with several days of horrendous tummy problems which meant a week off work and I didn’t take any more injections. However I have tried and failed to count calories since then and now at a point where I am seriously considering going back on the injections. So my question is- is this a silly decision ? My husband thinks I’m nuts for even considering it. I’m not sure if it was due to my diet or whether it was a build up of magnesium supplements causing the diarrhoea. Or should I just persevere with calorie counting ? I have approx 3 stone to lose. Thanks in advance

I’d say it was crazy too. I’d try maybe wegovy.

FlappingMadly · 10/01/2025 20:06

What were you eating last time you were on MJ?

Smaller portions of a slimming world type diet , low carb etc. mostly yoghurt / fruit for breakfast , sandwich for lunch, and chicken or salmon with veg for dinner. I did have some mince in pastry and also a baked potato a couple of days before the 💩 so possibly the culprit

My first two injections on a Monday morning in my thigh led to horrid stomach issues and diarrhoea, I switched to a Sunday evening and stomach and have only had mild upset stomachs a few times since then (early Nov)

Mince and a potato wouldn’t have you off work for a week. I’m sorry but it can’t be that.

Something has caused the extreme reaction so I think everyone is different. I asked on a different forum and the consensus was the baked potato is a high GI food.

Thanks that’s helpful , I always injected my thigh but could always try a different site if I do choose to go back

I, about to start Mounjaro after a similar experience on Wegovy last year. I was ok on the lowest dose of Wegovy, but 3 weeks into 0.5mg I also got the most horrendous diarrhoea plus a rash so I stopped.

I'm now even more fed up with my weight and am the biggest I've ever been so I'm giving Mounjaro a go instead. I'm going to take the lowest dose possible to get the benefits but not the side effects and see if that is ok.

Good luck OP if you decide to try again.

Bluenose1966 · 11/01/2025 08:14

I know in USA they sometimes take a lot smaller doses than we take and still lose weight successfully. I would be tempted to do the first week or so on 1.25mg and see how you feel. That would be 30 clicks of pen instead of usual 60 clicks.

Tailfeather · 11/01/2025 08:14

I had awful diarrhoea on Mounjaro, but not on wegovy. It's so weitd as most people get constipated on Mounjaro, but I end uo with severe diarrhoea no matter what I eat (or don't eat).

Aw no sorry to hear you had such a bad reaction. It’s so disheartening when you think you’ve found the perfect tool to help lose weight. Good luck on the MJ. are you meaning micro dosing ? Or 2.5. Either way best of luck and hope it works better for you !

@ChristmasiscomingImstillfat who knows!
Maybe you were just unlucky and a combination of things caused your tummy upset. Some MJ users on here though do report the same. I don't see anything specifically in what you ate that could have caused it. Maybe it was a bug?

Thanks , part of me thinks it’s worth trying once more and if the same thing happens then that’s it. I don’t think it was a bug as it went alongside the sulphur burps !

This is something I’ve looked into , there is mixed results reported and not a lot of evidence yet but I think it might be worth a shot!

I was constipated on week 1 but then went totally the other way by end of week 3!! It’s the unknown that unsettles me the most when it comes to restarting !

Op, I lost 3 stone last yr on mj, but after 4 months, I got really bad side effects and stopped injecting (was on 7.5), stopped for about 3 weeks, got better and used the pen to reduce to 2.5/3 jab and was fine with that, kept loosing around 1lb a week. Yes I used the pen after 30days and was fine. (I couldn’t afford to chuck £200 away and buy lower dose pen) I didn’t have the same ‘I can’t eat’ feeling so I suspect I shouldn’t have increased the jab so much (so hard when u want to lose big/have a lot to lose)

i want to start again as still weight to loose, I’m still obese.
it’s been hard with small losses, when I started mj I was loosing 3kgs a week, now 1kg a week, but 3kg is probably too much every week!

im restarting at 2.5 when its payday!
I’ve learned better eating skills, simple eating, soups, porridge, I’ve not been hungry or have gone without.

Thanks so much this is really helpful. It’s so strange how you can be fine for so long then have the side effects , I guess as it will be titrating up in your system. 1kg a week is great and definitely more sustainable , especially when you think of that continuing over a long period of time.

In time I hope MJ is finessed cos why do some have dramatic tummy upsets and others not? Is it linked to blood sugar, gut health, change in diet? Maybe tummy upset is a sign that the person taking it is metabolically fine and MJ is too much. Maybe a prebiotic or sth else will be added. Maybe a mandatory reset month before starting. It's interesting. Sorry for using your post for rambling OP.

I strongly suspect it was the magnesium supplements causing your diarrhoea. I take one or two supplements to ease any constipation I have from having to take co-codamols long term, 4 years plus. They definitely 'speed up' the digestion. I don't take them daily as I don't need to, but if I go more than a day without a bowel action, I take one, and get a result. If I take two it can have a more severe result. You mentioned a build up of magnesium supplements, so you probably had an extreme outcome from that. If you read the reviews on Amazon for magnesium supplements a lot of people report diarrhea as an unwelcome side effect but if you need things speeded up then these will do it. I'm also taking Mounjaro, got 7lbs to go until I stop. But I'm careful not to take too much magnesium because diarrhea isn't fun. Try again but be mindful of the magnesium, take only one at a time until you find what works for you.

Thank you. I have had other symptoms such as palpitations so this is exactly what I discovered when searching for reasons why I reacted the way I did ! I take 2 a day at the moment and wondered how best to cut this back. I take the magnesium for migraine ( a whole different story but it seems to do something positive that way) so was always reluctant to stop it.

OP posts:
Dailymauifan · 11/01/2025 10:56

If I were to take two daily I would end up with 'leakage', again not desired. It's a pity if it helps with your migraines but it's also probably causing you digestive problems as well. Don't know the answer unfortunately, but I think you are on the right track suspecting the magnesium. Hope you find something that works for you. xx

Witchyandtwitchy · 11/01/2025 18:26

I’d second the theory of magnesium.
I take it too, but can only take one a day. If I take two it upsets my stomach.

Can you try reducing your dose?

Arglefraster · 11/01/2025 22:35

Have you thought about trying different forms of magnesium? I also use it to reduce my migraines (& improve my sleep) so understand why you wouldn't want to be without it.

I use Magnesium Glycinate but I think malate is supposed to be good for sensitive stomachs too.

Or you could take magnesium salt baths/spray magnesium salts into your skin to bypass your digestive system entirely.

This is really interesting. I take the gummies version as I struggled with the huge horse pills initially ! I’ll do some investigating , is there a specific brand you use ? Thanks

Wow, had no idea that magnesium supplements can have much an effect. I've always heard very little gets absorbed.
