Is there any point if I can only afford a few months

I have about 5 stone to lose - pretty daunting. I have started trying to make some changes whilst I consider injections with the idea that I would need to change habits long term.

Realistically I could only afford a few months medication so would need to treat injections as a boost whilst I start exercising and changing diet.

Would there be any point in this? I’ve tried reading and can’t decide.

Do you buy chocolate for yourself? Crisps? Takeaways? Alcohol?

Add all that together over a month and see how it compares because you won't want any of it

Bringon2025 · 05/01/2025 22:35

Too many takeaways in the past is part of why I gained weight - but also had a bad impact on my finances. So I think I am fairly frugal these days, . It will be interesting to see if I do spend less though. I imagine simply eating significantly less than I do will save money. Snacks probably add up.

This is all pretty positive. I have 5 stone to lose too & wasn't considering the injections but if I can change habits this month I may research more & invest.

Good luck OP & keep us updated!

I started MJ on 5th September weighing 217.5 lb and as of this morning weigh 176.3 lb. BMI has gone from 33 - 27 in 4 months and I'm now about 1 stone away from a healthy BMI, as someone who was an obese child I have never had a healthy BMI within my memory.

3-4 months has the potential to make a huge difference, so I it's something you want to do, go for it.

Vax · 06/01/2025 07:44

If you go with medexpress and put your £40 referral code on the promo board, you'll get a few people using it.

I've had 10 sign ups and so got 2 months free effectively

diian · 06/01/2025 08:57

I lost 3 stone with 4 pens. Mind you, my body did not agree with the 7.5mg pen so I had to do clicks to get 3.75mg out. That pen lasted for 8 weeks. I know there is a 30 day limit, but I did not want to waste precious doses and it was absolutely fine with good suppression. With discounts, 3 stone cost me £500.

If someone had said "would you pay £500 to be 3 stone lighter, be a size 12 not size 18, improve my health and self confidence...?" I would do it in a heart beat.

My dad died of diabetes related illnesses after having a quadruple heart bypass, leg amputation and going blind. My health is my wealth.

I think part of my struggle is around it feeling too good to be true…. Like spending on gym membership. Yet the evidence is out there - and in all the stories here.
It’s still difficult to imagine me losing significant amounts of weight - but we shall see!!

3 stone in 3 months is amazing @lunar1. I actually find it difficult to imagine being 3 stone lighter.

Neither could I three months ago.

This stopped me for at least a year, I was convinced I would be the only person it wouldn't work for, and that scared me more than my weight for a long time.

I had 8 stone to lose. I started without mounjaro and I lost a bit (always easier at the beginning) by calorie counting and exercise. I then took mj for about 8 months which really helped me continue to lose weight.

For me this was the best way to do it while minimising the cost - losing a lot of weight long term can be difficult as it gets demotivating after a while. The mj meant I could continue without feeling deprived.

I second the posts about the bonus dose too. I only started doing it in my last two pens but it really saves money. I used insulin syringes rather than the "extra twist" method

Theredjellybean · 06/01/2025 10:01

I lost 13 kilos in 8 weeks and now maintaining as at goal weight.
I also use syringe and needles to extract varying doses , so my last 5mg pen lasted 7 weeks and was fine.
I'll keep fingers crossed for you OP...I responded really well to just the loading doses of 2.5 mg

Bringon2025 · 06/01/2025 11:36

I have been reading about weight regain after stopping. Seems like a big issue. I must try very hard to get more active and think about triggers for eating junk food - alongside injections.

i will also read the info on here about bonus doses. Maybe be possible to keep taking it a while longer.

My dh is on MJ. In 3 months he’s now down nearly 4 stone with his goal for 1 more stone. We see the money as offset from reduced takeaways as he has zero food cravings. He’s gone from 20 stone to 16.6 in just over 3 months.

Bringon2025 · 06/01/2025 11:53

The weight loss people are experiencing in
a few months is remarkable.

@Bringon2025
I was worried about gain if I stopped but I have had a few weeks off...and gained a 1lb
I found I still didn't want to drink much alcohol, I also could still only eat smaller portions.
I did notice I wanted to eat for the comfort, nice taste, oooh I fancy it... reasons which you just don't have on the injections. So I needed a bit more willpower.
I am currently experimenting with maintenance dosing...I don't want to lose anymore but need a bit of background suppression.
This week I'm on 2 mg dose...I'm hungry for dinner but not really the rest of the time.
Opened crisps last night and had a few and managed to put them back in cupboard..thought about them for few minutes but then forgot they were there

Theredjellybean · 06/01/2025 12:27

Many suppliers are looking at maintenance...so while most say 2 yrs max, I'm not sure how that can be policed tbh.
I'm at goal weight and med express still supplying me with no questions asked

But I’m guessing it’s not two years, and quite far from it.

caringcarer · 06/01/2025 14:56

In your situation I'd try it. I'd start on the low dose and if I was losing weight on that low dose I'd keep on the low dose longer before moving up to a higher dose. Stretch the meds out. In 4 months you could have lost 2 stone then you'd be in better shape to exercise. Also eating less becomes a habit.

I’d do th4 opposite, I’d take the bonus dose, stretch it out and go up each time if I knew I could only have four months,

HansHolbein · 06/01/2025 15:15

I’m also down nearly 3 stone in 3 months. Do it!

In contrast... I've only lost half a stone in 3 months and not saved any money as I rarely had take aways or alcohol before starting.

Sorry to be a a Debbie downer!

I did lose 2 stone before starting though so I perhaps didn't have the initial whoosh of weight loss people have!

Bringon2025 · 06/01/2025 17:10

It’s good to get honest responses.

That was an expensive half a stone!!

Another mounjaro user here. I've lost 3 stone in 4 months and much has included a holiday and Xmas. I think it's a great idea as using it as a boost to start off your weight loss.

At the end of the day mounjaro doesn't make you lose weight. What you put in your mouth does.
It makes it a heck of a lot easier though it needs to be used as a tool to help you make long term changes to your lifestyle
If you just eat smaller portions of the crap you were eating before it will pile straight back on as soon as you stop.
I speak from experience!!!.

Bringon2025 · 26/03/2025 15:25

Update…. Not as fast as some but two stone down!

eating more vegetables salad and fish.

need to tackle the crisps habit (reduced but regular) And increase exercise if I am to keep going medication free soon
