Self prescribing Mounjaro

fatandfriendly2024 · 26/12/2024 17:03

Hi,

Changed my name for anonymity.

I have found out over Christmas that someone I know who is a nurse has been self prescribing Mounjaro and also prescribing for friends.

I suspect they shouldn't be doing this. Am I wrong? I can't help but think this is really worrying!

You need to report these concerns to the NMC i think and possibly the local ccg?

Autumnblackberries · 26/12/2024 17:05

NMC territory
Doctors and nurses absolutely cannot do this

Good on you @fatandfriendly2024 for taking action.

Thank you

The majority of nurses cannot prescribe, you have to do an extra masters level course to be able to do this. Amd even then they are normally constrained in what they can prescribe. So are you sure your right?

crackfoxy · 26/12/2024 18:25

Nurses with a non medical prescribing course can prescribe anything within the BNF if within their scope of practice. So if this Nurse is a diabetic nurse or bariatric specialist they could be allowed to prescribe monjouro, but only to their patients not for themselves or friends. What they are doing goes against the NMC code of conduct. Do you know what area the Nurse works? I.e GP/ ward?

Sproutssprouts · 26/12/2024 18:49

Highly unlikely that someone would jeopardise their prescribing rights like this.

She does have a masters degree and was an advanced practitioner in a GP’s practice. She now works in a hospital. I know which one.

You would think not.

Do you know for 100%?

She boasted about prescribing it today for her and her sister. Both of which have lost 60lbs and 40lbs.

She might be prescribing it 'for a friend' then taking it herself.
I know someone who does this with Botox.

macap · 26/12/2024 19:04

Hmm I have no idea about rules when it comes to prescribing others meds so can't comment.

Would they qualify for MJ if they tried themselves through a legit pharmacy?

Yes, she would have a BMI > 27

I work for the nhs. If I was to access my health record or that of a family member or neighbour it would be automatically flagged and investigated. There's really strict rules about this and if you think she's self prescribing you should report. It'll be taken very seriously.

TidyDancer · 26/12/2024 19:13

Is she writing it as a private prescription? I'm not sure how she's not getting noticed if she's doing it under the NHS. Regardless, she is breaking all kinds of rules but could very well go unnoticed privately for some time so you definitely need to report it.

AubreysMonkey · 26/12/2024 19:14

This doesn't add up .. why would she need to prescribe it for herself? She would still have to pay for the drug. She could just use an online pharmacy.

I agree. If she was prescribing via the NHS would she pay NHS prescription prices?

Why would Mounjaro be accessed in the hospital why would the NHS have it unless they work in a weight loss clink or something f

Does she write a prescription and then the patient or her sends it to an online prescriber to be fulfilled? So she can get it without meeting the BMI the online pharmacy requires to issue a prescription themselves.

I don't think you can just drop an NHS prescription into your local pharmacy and get them to source Mounjaro but maybe you can?

fatandfriendly2024 · 26/12/2024 19:27

@Choux i don’t know. I didn't ask for the details.

You can in our area. Might take an extra couple of days. DH is prescribed Mounjaro on the NHS.

fatandfriendly2024 · 26/12/2024 19:55

I've just checked, they can prescribe Mounjaro on the NHS in this area.

getthosetitsup · 26/12/2024 20:02

I collect Mounjaro from my local pharmacy (NHS prescription).

You should report this OP. If it was all empty bluster and she's really done nothing nefarious then she has nothing to fear. And if she has, it's on her.

Mysticmaiden2024 · 26/12/2024 20:06

Someone I know who is an ex registered nurse of 20+ years who does aesthetics, who I went to for cryotherapy, sells WLI, states clearly as prescriptions for ozempic, wegovy, mounjaro on her website booking and fbook for £200 a month. She spoke about it to me too when I messaged her about it and didnt even ask about me BMI. This was before I started them myself from online pharmacies because I could get it a lot cheaper. But I didn't know she wasn't allowed to sell them back then and forgot all about it until I saw this post.
