Process to stop taking MJ?

MooFroo · 15/12/2024 08:22

ive been on MJ since August

started at 2.5g and am up to 10g now.
four months in and….

I’ve only lost 5-7lbs
in total
in 4 months at over £500 cost! The weight loss has fluctuated but been around 1-2lbs off and then back on again, no inch loss although I do look a bit thinner esp face and back fat.

just finished my 4th week of 10mg and honestly don’t see the point of carrying on.

I’ve had awful sulphur burps, and some horrible diorrhea in the first 2 months or so

I am so gutted as kept hoping I would love as the dosage went up after reading it takes a while for boys to adjust to it - but it just hasn’t happened :(

I’m type 2 diabetic, on no meds so was hoping this would help to control and help control the blood sugars - which are generally stable.

In the same time a friend has lost over 2 stone doing MJ and another friend has lost around 3 stone with changing her eating and joining gym for last 6 months.

I am currently almost 50, weigh around 13.5 stone, size 18 and wanted to get down to around 10.5 stone and a size 12.

My sleep and and water intake isn’t great and I’m peri menopausal.

is it worth carrying on or can I just stop? I have changed my eating habits a lot and cut out junk and a lot of carbs too

thanks for any feedback

On 10 weeks I've lost almost a stone, I was 13st 1 and now 12 St 2.5lbs. My friend who weighs more than me has lost maybe half in 8 weeks, she doesn't calorie count or drink any water, only tea or coffee. I calorie count and eat at least 500 cals less than my TDEE and drink water maybe 500ml on top of teas and coffees and have electrolytes. I have increased my protein a fair bit, my friend has almost all carbs. The comparison is to give you tips in case you can try methods as it's a shame if it is helping with blood sugars etc. It's lowered my blood pressure and sugars, I was prediabetic and high in both. I don't mind the slow loss, better for skin and maintaining.

I think you need to speak to your doctor. As you’re diabetic. Was mounjaro prescribed for your diabetes? Or did you go private for weight loss.

id make an urgent appt, as your diabetes needs managing.

as for mounjaro, studies showed it doesn’t work for 15 percent of people.

Mysticmaiden2024 · 15/12/2024 09:10

To stop you can taper down the doses by counting clicks. So 30 clicks is half a dose. If you're on 10 you can do 45 clicks for 7.5mg. Depending on how many pens you have left too and if you want to do it over a long time or quickly.

Doggymummar · 15/12/2024 09:12

I've lost 9lb since September 18th and I'm over the moon, guess we are all different. Before then I was on a plateau for 9 months. What was your weight doing before hand, were you maintaining or getting heavier? Losing 4 and not gaining is a win in my eyes.

SilenceInside · 15/12/2024 09:14

As you're paying for it yourself I'm assuming it wasn't prescribed for your diabetes, so I don't know if your GP or whoever is managing your diabetes will be able to advise you.

Before stopping, I think I would want to be certain that I was definitely in a sufficient calorie deficit over the course of a week. So, calculate your TDEE and then being at least 500 calories below per day on average over a week.

And, if you've got a private prescription and it's not for the diabetes but just for weight loss then you can absolutely just stop if you want to. It then will take a little while for the medication to fully leave your system.

Good point.

the question I guess then is why is your diabetes not managed op, is this a decision your gp took?

on mj, just come off. If you’re sure your blood sugar is not stable due to it.

Thank you. Due to order next one but as debating whether to bother or if I can go cold turkey and just stop

Thank you @SilenceInside

I am paying but checked with doctor who was happy for me to try it. They’d advised to try lifestyle changes to manage diabetes before going on medication so I was using as part of those changes- have also changed diet, lots more protein and veg, cut out chocolate and take aways.

Not been tracking food regularly enough but changed diet a lot and whole family eating much healthier overall.

Mysticmaiden2024 · 15/12/2024 09:32

You can just stop, it will be in your system around 20 days anyway due to half life. If it was me I'd want to keep some appetite suppression so taper down over time.

SilenceInside · 15/12/2024 09:34

@MooFroo I would say that it is working for you, in that you've experienced some symptoms of slower digestion and you've been able to change what you've been eating. And you have lost some weight, just not as much as you would have hoped.

Is it worth tracking calories for a week to see how much of a calorie deficit you are in and if that matches the amount of weight you've lost?

Ilovethewild · 15/12/2024 09:35

I’m curious op, did you notice a reduction in food noise? Have you felt full on mj without eating much? Do u generally eat healthy? High protein, low fat/carbs? Has your calarie intake changed?

I lost around 1 stone every 5 weeks, was size 20 to start.

had plenty of challenges on route.

so sorry it’s not worked for you but there are other jabs/tablets if weight loss is your desire.

i wouldn’t continue if I was you as it’s not working as expected.

CatFondue · 15/12/2024 09:40

Don’t despair! At 4 months I had only lost 6.2 pounds. Yes 6.2lbs!! I have insulin resistance. I am now at month 8 and have lost 26.2 pounds. It is very slow but still life changing, and without Mounjaro the weight loss was pretty much impossible. I’ve gone from a size 16-18 to a 10-12. I know it’s disheartening when people lose weight faster than this but at the same time, slow and steady is good.

Basilsage · 15/12/2024 10:34

Comments so far are supportive. Mine is you've come so far and put your money in to MJ. Why not track calories see where you are? MJ is meant to help us but we need to be consuming less.

You put: I’m type 2 diabetic, on no meds so was hoping this would help to control and help control the blood sugars - which are generally stable.

I've done keto diet before and avoid carbs and sweet things. I'm not T2D. Fifty pounds for two weeks use of a continuous glucose monitor (amazon purchase) helped me see how I was doing.

WeAllHaveWings · 15/12/2024 14:30

If you are not losing you need to track every single food and drink, weighing everything including any oils used to see what the problem is.

Go to the TDEE calculator site and work out your cutting calories and use an app to track to ensure you are in the appropriate weekly calorie deficit.

If you don't measure it you can't manage it.

Popular apps for measuring are My Fitness Pal and Nutracheck

unsync · 15/12/2024 15:51

You need to track your calories, even if you only do it for a week. I suspect you are taking in a lot more than you think. Once you do that, you'll get a better picture of what's going on.

Witchlite · 15/12/2024 17:30

If tracking calories is not something you feel you want to do, would you try the low carb diet. It’s particularly good for diabetes. There’s a very good group on Mumsnet- they are really supportive and there’s usually a bootcamp (start date support thread) in early January.

The thing is MJ enables people to diet. I think of it as injecting willpower and stopping your body fighting against you. But you have to actually diet - it doesn’t do it for you.

you’ve invested time and money already and won’t have to acclimatise to the drug. Have a go at a different diet style and see if that works.

Good luck 🤞🏻

MooFroo · 15/12/2024 19:53

Thanks @Ilovethewild I did have less food noise and definitely cut out snacking, chocolate and chocolates- loads of protein and lower carbs so food noise was reduced.
I’d say last couple of months I haven’t felt the appetite suppressant as much on the higher dosage and have wanted to eat more food.

@unsync @Basilsage @SilenceInside @WeAllHaveWingsthank you for your feedback

i will try another month and track better. I was doing 1600 calories a day which was a good amount of food, focused on high protein and mixed with IF so ate 2 meals a day.

I’ll get onto Myfitness pal and plan meals with run tracking.

thank you all x

@CatFondue thats amazing! Well done on losing over 2 stone - what was the main change or did it suddenly start to come off at a certain dosage?

No change I think I was just a very slow starter. My first month I gained 😅 I’ve gone all the way up to max dose but have settled on 7.5mg which is just right for me. There’s no way I would have lost this without the help of Mounjaro, it really is a miracle drug.

Mysticmaiden2024 · 15/12/2024 21:00

1600 calories seems high for losing weight. For me that's maintenance calories and I have upto 1200 max to lose, usually less than 1100 a day. My basal metabolic rate is 1479. I was 13 stone and a big size 14, I've noticed you said you were an 18 at 13.5 stones. I'm only 5 ft 3, are you shorter? It would help you to do your TDEE and cut 500 off it to lose weight.

Snozzlemaid · 15/12/2024 21:31

Yes if I eat more than 1200 calories I don't lose.
I would never have dreamt I could live on so few calories but MJ has made it possible for me.

Doggymummar · 15/12/2024 21:47

1600 is very high. I tend to be around 1000-1200 and lose only half a pound a week. When I go to 800 I lose more, including hair! So I don't want to do that again. I am stepping up exe rise from tomorrow as I can't eat any less and still be healthy, can you do more exercise?

MooFroo · 16/12/2024 05:14

Sorry it was 1200 calories not 1600 👍🏽

I’ll get on with tracking and exercise - my steps have been down in the colder weather so need to get back up to 10k steps consistently.

thank you all for the reality check!

@MooFroo

can you tell me what you mean by 45 clicks? My pen you just put it in and push the button down there are no clicks!
