Do you weigh yourself daily or weekly?

Just starting my journey and wondering what to do for the best. I want to lose weight slowly and healthily for my starting weight 14 stone, eg 2 lbs per week, so maybe weekly would be fine. OTOH maybe daily might more of an incentive (but could also be neurotic). Wondering what works for other people?

Hi, personally every day but mostly because I fluctuate a lot day to day, more than I could lose in a full week. So I do everyday and average out at the end of the week to get a "real" value. If you weigh everyday and take the numbers at face value you might find it very worrying so be careful with what you do with the numbers

FurryCharm · 14/12/2024 14:41

@Anya80 thanks, sounds quite a good idea, I like the idea of averaging out daily numbers to get a truer picture for once a week snapshot.

Weekly officially but I might check once during the week.

Pumpkinforever · 14/12/2024 14:57

Same as Hans above. I do an official weigh on Tuesday morning and a sneaky hop on Saturday or Sunday because I need to know

unsync · 14/12/2024 14:59

Every day, but I log once a week. I do it daily to normalise weight fluctuations. I can see that even though some days are up and some down over the course of a week, by the end of the week, the trend is usually still downwards.

murraymcgill · 14/12/2024 15:22

Weekly for me I couldn't do daily my life revolving around the scales would do my head in

CatVapour · 14/12/2024 15:24

Most days just to check and weekly to actually log it.

Snozzlemaid · 14/12/2024 15:37

I weigh daily. I know my weight will go up and down a bit and I'm fine with this as over the week there are more losses than gains.
If I weigh weekly and my one day of weighing is one of those days my weight has gone up I feel like I've wasted a whole week and beat myself up for not losing. I'm then miserable for the whole week until I can then hopefully feel good about myself again.
Whereas weighing each day, if my weight goes up a little I can shrug it off and know that the next day will most likely show a loss.
So I'm only a little fed up for a day rather than having to wait a whole week to see a weight loss.

FurryCharm · 14/12/2024 15:44

Thanks all. A lot of sense spoken.

When I feel like it.

I know I'm losing weight, I know I'm going in the right direction. If I know I've had a heavier carb day, or less water, the day before, I won't weigh as it doesn't represent where I'm actually at

Snozzlemaid · 14/12/2024 16:18

And weighing daily has really helped me to learn what slows the weight loss, as I can see an instant direct result depending of what I've eaten the day before.
If I eat bread or potatoes I won't lose so quickly. If I drink plenty of water and consume less salt it really helps to speed up the losses.

CameraGown · 14/12/2024 17:09

I tend to leave it until I know I've definitely lost weight and straight after going to the toilet in the morning, if you know what I mean ;)

If you weigh too often you will see your weight fluctuate and that could be a bit damaging to your motivation

Flapearedknave · 14/12/2024 17:12

Used to be everyday when I started in march. I'm 6 stone down and it's whenever I remember now. Usually once or twice a week!

Doggymummar · 14/12/2024 17:31

Morning and night everyday, I only log my weight when it goes down tho!

SurreyisSunny · 14/12/2024 17:48

Everyday, I can see how the weight loss is going better as I fluctuate a bit

Silvesterthecat · 14/12/2024 18:27

Daily, first thing in the morning after a wee and always naked!! I log my weight when it changes and always log it weekly no matter what on the same day each week. I have learnt then difference that each meal can make and it’s also surprising the difference clothes can make eg thin pajamas still add on a pound!!

TwirlyPineapple · 14/12/2024 18:32

Daily. I find it much better for my mental health to see fluctuations and become comfortable with them, rather than have one big weigh in each week and feel gutted if it goes badly. It's also interesting to see what causes the fluctuations- periods, constipation, which foods stay in my stomach longer or are heavier in general etc.

I only record my weight once a week. But if it's not a loss on that day, I usually have lost at some point during the week which is less upsetting.

magicalmrmistoffelees · 14/12/2024 18:35

Daily for me, out of habit. I get up, go to the toilet, take my pyjamas for the shower and jump on the scales just before I get in. Takes about 20 seconds. I only log if it’s gone down though!

Arglefraster · 14/12/2024 19:59

Not daily or weekly but I use the (free) happy scale app which basically smooths out the curve of the graph.

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 14/12/2024 20:20

Daily and several times a day! I am fascinated by the fluctuations and it has really made me desensitised to any gains. I don’t make a point of it but if I’m in the bathroom, I hop on the scales. I only record once a week on a Thursday though!

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/12/2024 20:33

Once a week. Same time

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/12/2024 20:34

Call it WWJ day

Wee
Weigh
Jab

SilenceInside · 14/12/2024 20:36

I am another who usually weighs daily in the morning, I'm also fascinated by the daily variations and which day of the week sees the most change. I don't like to be surprised on my official weigh in day, which is the only day I actually record my weight.

FinallyHere · 14/12/2024 20:39

Anytime I actually weigh myself I'm tempted to 'stray' from my way of eating, either to celebrate if I've lost or to commiserate if I've gained. Instead, I just stick to my way of eating and weigh myself every four to six weeks, to confirm all is going well. I use fancy scales at the gym at work (in the middle of the morning when the gym is very quiet. It shows my weight and also breakdown by muscle, fat and water.

I've been eating this way for a good few years now, and know it works for me. I decide what to eat according to how I'll feel after I've eaten.

After years of having a range of sizes in my wardrobe, I now have nothing that does not fit me. If anything felt tight, I might start to review whether I was going off lists food wise.

Tohaveandtohold · 14/12/2024 20:46

Weekly for me. I used to do it daily in the first 3 weeks and it almost became an obsession so now I weight every Saturday morning. I jab the same day as well
