What do you do with old clothes?

I've been on Mounjaro since April and lost 4 1/2 stone from a starting weight of 20 stone. I'm so pleased as I've never managed to do this before and never thought I'd be able to after being obese all my life (now late 40's). It has changed my life.
But I'm sorting some clothes now and I have a lot that doesn't fit me anymore but I don't think I can bring myself to get rid of them. Part of me feels I should as otherwise I'm saying to myself I'm not going to stick with this but as I've never been in this situation before I'm so worried I will just pile the weight back on and then have the cost of buying new clothes again!
So far I've only brought myself one new pair of jeans as I don't want to spend loads while I still have weight to loose and I'm managing with belts and the few items in my wardrobe that were too small as I always hoped I would fit back into them. I have a pair of jeans I loved and haven't worn since I got pregnant with my eldest who's now 22 and I can almost fit them! So as you can see I'm a bit of a hoarder 😂
So what are you all doing about clothes that are now too big?

The truth is that a lot of people do put weight back on once they come off weight loss injections, so it partly depends if you're planning to be on them long term or not.

Personally I'd just put the clothes that are too big away in a suitcase/ drawer somewhere and forget about them. There's no point throwing them away until you've maintained the weight loss for a few years.

Harrumphju · 10/12/2024 11:35

Give them away or put them in one of those vaccuum sealed bags and store away. If you end up never using them, you can still give them away much later on.

Daisypod · 10/12/2024 11:38

I think I will definitely stay on long term, at least a few years due to how long I have been an overeater so I suppose with that in mind hopefully I won't go back to how big I was before.
The trouble is our house is very overcrowded so I'm desperately trying to declutter!

I have a suitcase full of summer clothes that I rotate with winter clothes and put in the cupboard under the stairs so you could do this. Stuff I want to get rid of i put in the cancer research charity bin at Tkmaxx.

BookishType · 10/12/2024 11:39

Congrats on the amazing weight loss!

I started off by buying a belt as my trousers were sliding down, but then I realised I really had to buy smaller sizes. Now I can’t stop. 😬

I have donated loads and sold some higher value things on Vinted. I’ve lost 40 pounds and even things like pyjama bottoms are falling off me. I wasn’t overweight for very long, only a couple of years, so I have no intention of gaining the weight back. 🤞

Daisypod · 10/12/2024 11:48

No room under the stairs, no loft space, we really have no storage available! We have 5 kids (4still at home so there's a lot of stuff)
One thing I didn't think of when I started this was pants, I've had to buy new ones as they were falling down. I'm not unhappy about that though

Ok I'm replying while going through all my clothes and I found the jeans I mentioned that I haven't worn for 23 years and thought I'd try them again as I haven't tried them on for a month or so. They slid on and I did them up no problem. I'm so emotional right now. So pleased I kept them!

InfoSecInTheCity · 10/12/2024 12:00

Get rid of it.

Dont allow yourself a mental fall back position of having bigger clothes waiting for when you need them

I'm similar to you, in my 40s on MJ and 35lbs lost. If it's baggy it goes in the charity bin or on Vinted. I have bought a few new dresses mainly on Vinted that make me feel wonderful because they fit, they look good and they are 2 sizes smaller than anything I've worn in years.

When they are too big they will go on Vinted and I'll buy myself more.

Pumpkinforever · 10/12/2024 12:05

Anything presentable to charity shop. Anything looking past its best to recycling

MJDecember24 · 10/12/2024 12:07

I haven’t started my pens yet but I’ve already started thinking about this. Most of the clothes I have at this weight are pretty low grade, I have been living in jogging bottoms and leggings for the last few years. They will get binned or turned into rags/diy wear. I have quite a few nice jumpers, I will keep them and just wear them baggy. Underwear is all only fit for the bin anyway. Workwear will get swapped with the massive suitcases I have of currently too small clothes I have in the loft, just in case, as I hate spending money on work clothes so want them there just in case the weight does creep back on.

Redlightbulb · 10/12/2024 12:36

Last time I lost a significant amount of weight I dumped all of my 'fat' clothes as it really felt like that this would be the last time. But I regretted it as I still gained back the weight and more. But this was during lockdown so was stuck at home wearing comfy clothes. It was easy for my jogging bottoms, oversized hoodies and loose t shirts to stretch & by the time normal service resumed it was too late and I had to buy fat clothes again in a rush. Such a depressing experience. I am sure many can relate!
This time around I will be keeping them for a while but I have the storage space. In the loft they go. I won't get rid of them until I have maintained for a long time.
@Daisypod
I would try and hold on to them if you can. Do you have a shed you could put them in? maybe in a suitcase in the shed.

Darlinghag · 10/12/2024 12:38

Whether I’ve lost or gained, I rarely keep clothes that don’t fit (unless it the next size down and I am halfway into it!). I personally will Vinted sell the best, charity shop items that are low value or won’t sell but still in good condition, and then recycle the rest at clothing banks, or throw, depending on what those take.
I’m not a fan of keeping my ‘biggest’ items as comparison, as I prefer to try and look forward, not back.

AnnaMagnani · 10/12/2024 12:39

I got rid. It's actually been quite difficult working out my style as a smaller person.

Darlinghag · 10/12/2024 12:40

@AnnaMagnani I agree!! I found myself avoiding dresses a lot - before, they were a go to as I found them more flattering at my old size! Casual before felt slobbish or lazy?? Weird! But its really tough figuring out what I like and what size I actually am!!

AnnaMagnani · 10/12/2024 12:51

I totally wore dresses before but the big difference is now I have a waist, what am I supposed to do with it!

Tohaveandtohold · 10/12/2024 12:59

I’m honestly getting rid. I got rid of the small ones when I got bigger as well. I try to sell on Vinted and give some to my friends or charity as much as I can so they’re not going to waste. I have some clothes for when I was slimmer and I don’t even like those styles anymore anyway so I’m even getting rid of those, only jeans and trousers from then that I’m using no. I’ll buy clothes when I need them however, fingers crossed, this will be the last time I’ll be needing the big clothes.

TuxedoRain · 10/12/2024 13:10

Difficult question. It’s really a personal decision - but I would keep my hard to replace or fave items - at least for a few years.

If you maintain your goal weight for say 4 years, you could then dispose of.

If you have “no space” I would only keep the ones you really would be sorry you gave away if you did put on weight.

I used to believe the “mental” view of getting rid of things you wore at a higher weight, but don’t anymore. Because people do change over time, that’s the reality, so to be on the safe side …

I remember I gave away a virtually new beautiful red wool coat because I went from a size 18 to 14. I went back up to a 16-18 within 2 years or and stayed there. Currently trying to get back to 14 with mounjara.

Hopefully you will continue where you’re at - and big congratulations what you’ve achieved so far!

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 10/12/2024 14:01

@Daisypod HUGE congratulations on the jeans!! It’s very emotional isn’t it?!
I currently have a massive pile of ‘too big’ clothes - jeans that fall down, tops I can practically wrap around myself twice etc - in a washing basket in my room. I think a charity shop is the way forward for me as I am not sure I can be bothered with photographing and loading them all onto Vinted tbh. I think, maybe for now, I will put them into a vacuum bag (or 3!) and shove them under my bed. Out of sight, out of mind and all that! 🤦‍♀️

Adventlandonhs · 10/12/2024 14:14

I plan to box up some of the nice newer stuff that’s bigger and store in the attic, generic denim shorts, floaty dresses. Most of it looks new as I haven’t been bigger for more then a year or so.

stuff that’s well used and was of low quality anyway I will just chuck away or use as rags.

Oversized jumpers I will just wear to bed instead of buying new pjs.

I’m essentially doing the same, up in the attic and then I don’t have to think about it 😂

I also can’t be dealing with the faff of vinted.

Femalefootyfan · 10/12/2024 15:39

I’m selling lots of clothes on Vinted that are far too big, partly because by keeping them, it’s like admitting I might need them again, which I am adamant won’t happen. Also, my style has changed a bit since dumping excess weight as my shape has obviously changed so I can wear different styles of clothing.

I have kept a couple of favourite items & found a great dressmaker who has altered them for me.

Congratulations on your weight loss, it’s an amazing feeling isn’t it?

Oneeata · 10/12/2024 16:25

Get shot of it all. Get it all on Vinted, it's easy as anything. I'm going to completely disagree with everyone saying keep it just in case. No. You are never going to be these sizes again, you've come too far to let yourself even think for a minute you "might" need it. Go full Marie Kondo, pick it up, hold it for 5 seconds and if it does not spark joy, snap it, bag it and stick it on Vinted.
I've kept one sweatshirt that's a size 24 and I would wear to hide myself in and that is it.
You've got this @Daisypod don't look back, keep going. 💕

1clavdivs · 10/12/2024 21:49

Mine are all going on Vinted. If I had space to keep them I might, but I don't even have the storage for the stuff that fits me, let alone the stuff that doesn't.

CoverMeInMarmalade · 11/12/2024 08:41

Personally, I keep the decent ones. I use those vacuum bags to minimise the space required.

I've lost/gained a few times over the years and if there is one thing more depressing than gaining weight: it's gaining and having nothing decent to wear. The flip side is, I am currently working my way through the various smaller sizes I have stored away.

I have long since given up trying to play mind games with myself by not keeping them in an attempt to make myself stay slimmer. Like everyone, I hope to never need those clothes again - but I think it'll probably be long term MJ use that achieves that, not chucking away my size 20s.

But I do think it's very personal and what is right for one person won't be for someone else.

Where do you get that truth from? It's such a new drug here in the UK that there can't possibly be tons of people you know that's happened to. Why wouldn't they just go back on it for a while?

It seems there are so many people who just want it to fail for overweight people.
