I'm starting to wonder if mounjaro is making me feel depressed

I started about 10th September I think, I've just had to go back down to 2.5mg as I couldn't cope with not being able to eat enough on the 5mg.
Anyway, I do suffer from anxiety which I take medication for and usually it comes and goes. But the last few weeks I am so incredibly down in the dumps, I've never been depressed, it's always anxiety with me so this is new and seemingly out of the blue. I'm starting to wonder if it's mounjaro, has anyone else's who's been on it a good couple of months felt this way ?
I have literally fuck all motivation, I barely leave the house these days. Everything feels like a massive effort, I feel really, meh. Just feel shit and not myself at all!

I’ve never been more tired in my life. I’m fine during the day at work, as I’m conditioned to be that way! But my evenings are a write-off as all I do is sleep. I would say my moods are probably a bit flat but I don’t think I can blame that on Mounjaro. Think a previous poster made an excellent point about us no longer getting a joyful hit from food/the anticipation of food.
My losses are quite slow, despite eating a high protein diet on a calorie deficit, so I’ll have to reflect on whether it’s all worth it, financially and otherwise!
What I would say to anyone embarking on this journey, is that it’s not a miracle cure.

I'm actually sick of the media making out it is a miracle cure .
It bloody well isn't
The few people I've told I'm taking it ,are assuming I'm having a easy ride loosing weight..and I'm not ..I'm needing a shit ton of willpower and I'm hungry all day and all night , my stomach rumbles constantly.
So I wish the media would stop pushing the idea it's an easy ride

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 12/06/2025 13:39

How long have you been on it? How's the weight loss? I haven't ever been hungry all day and night on it - quite the opposite but I've not restricted at all. -Do you think you could up what you're eating in the day even if it means losing a little slower? Add some more protein and larger meals or nuts for snacks might help?

JMSA · 12/06/2025 17:08

@Bulldogsummer

Oh, 100% agreed!

Agree @JMSA it absolutely is no miracle cure, and I keep getting sent on off road diversions on this journey. I've been on it over 11 months now, but the tiredness is still difficult (sometimes I can go a couple of weeks and feel great, then it tanks again) and I am slowly working through what could be causing that, I also don't think it is "just" Mounjaro, so much going on in my body that needs rebalancing after weight loss -

Low-ish blood pressure (after years of medicated high blood pressure 🙈)

Menopause - estrogen off balance as estrogen stored in fat cells (started HRT), trying different ways to take progesterone (vaginally) as it can also be the cause of tiredness

Nutritional deficiencies from 8 years of daily omeprazole - now off it thanks to weight loss which is great. Taking every other day B12 injections at home to resolve deficiency and repair nerve damage (Mounjaro 💉are a walk in the park compared to these nippy ones! 😩)

Now reintroducing more carbs which will mean slower loss (or even sticking at BMI 29 for a while until I feel better - started at BMI 45) While I have not been craving carbs anymore and loving protein and veg/salad, I think I might have gone too low carb which over time can cause its own issues for some people

Not my idea of easy at all! The tiredness might even be none of above, there are so many overlapping reasons for many of my symptoms, but they are enough to be working on for now! And of course trying to work all this out myself as Dr's and NHS tell me it is just niggles we all get as we get older and are just not interested 😞

I've lost 6 stone and I really need to loose the same again to get to a normal BMI .
But will probably just loose 4 so I don't get get loose skin .
I'm so tired I don't do much ,so therefore need less food ,and the weight loss has really slowed down , despite being on 15 mg

Bulldogsummer · 12/06/2025 18:50

I'm in bed already.despite having had a nap this afternoon, and I've done no exercise, and not eaten much today either .
The only good thing I'm doing is my vitamins and supplements.
The hair loss is still crazy as well

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 12/06/2025 18:55

I have slightly less to lose (11 stone) but lost 4 already and hoping to get there.

But your post is making me worry your tiredness could well be lack of energy. You shouldn't be hungry day and night and having a growling stomach honestly. And you can't live on suppliment long term you need food.

(although hear you with the lose skin! I've already got wobbly under arms now. How long did it take you to lose 6stone?)

Not what this thread was about I know but its just worrying me you're making yourself ill especially with hair loss etc. You don't want to have to come off the jabs because it's buggered up some vital organ or soemthing.

Bulldogsummer · 12/06/2025 19:07

I'm on about 1200 calories a day ,give or take ..
But any more than that and I don't loose weight
I thought that was the minimum no one had to drop below ,but it's not like I'm on 800 or anything.
I started last Oct

Bulldogsummer · 12/06/2025 19:08

I thought I'd be ok as long as I don't go lower cals wise

WinterBird24 · 13/06/2025 07:53

I feel very tired on it this time. But it’s not like physical exhaustion, more like that hazy feeling you get in the winter when you want to snuggle down on the sofa in the evening, but all day. I feel like I could always be lulled into a nap and I’m a gym bunny who works out 5-6x a week, or walks 4mi a day. Otherwise I’ve had no terrible side effects. I’m due on in a few days so resisting weighing myself. I think I’ve lost about 4lb in 3 weeks.

feistymumma · 14/06/2025 09:45

WinterBird24 · 09/06/2025 09:54

I did 2 weeks at 1.25 because last time I found 2.5 too much, I’ve done one week of 2.5 now.

How have you been since going back to 2.5mg. I haven't taken the injection for two weeks now as it was definitely bringing with it crippling anxiety at 5mg and 7.5mg. My head feels clearer now and so is my mood so I was contemplating doing 2.5mg and seeing how that goes but I'm still haunted by how absolutely terrible I felt two weeks ago.

Fine! The biggest side effect is feeling a bit tired. Absolutely nothing like when I tried it back in October. In fact I’m due on in 3 days and feeling less anxious than usual.

I took my second 2.5 yesterday.

That’s positive news, happy it’s working well. Is the suppression working just as good? I’ve got two 7.5mg doses left that I will use the click method. I think I’ll also order the 10mg pen and do the same and hopefully that will be me done as I have 10lb left to lose. I seemed to fare ok on 2.5mg.

WinterBird24 · 14/06/2025 15:52

@feistymumma no, I have barely any suppression, so I think I’ll need to move up to 5mg

Hopefully the 5mg does the trick and now that you are aware of how you can react it will make it that much easier to manage.

Same here. I wonder whether it's a combination of of low blood sugar because I'm eating less and the lack of sunlight as the weather has been so appalling. I've upped my multivitamins (especially vitamin D) but I'm really struggling with motivation to do any exercise (which I used to enjoy 3 times a week). I also feel cold all the time. I just want to hibernate until spring!

I have never in my whole life suffered with depression but after being on 2.5mg for almost 8 months now I have found I am really depressed and have been making decisions based on how I am feeling. So I'm happy to see it could be Munjaro.
I replied to this message too because I am always cold which is really getting to me because I'm usually a very hot person

A few people I have know haven’t been themselves on it, very meh and lost their spark. But they stuck with it. Lost the weight, and now are back to themselves now they are off it
