Anyone else have to stop taking Mounjaro because of the side effects?

I so wanted it to work! And it did, but I felt so awful, even at the lowest dose, that it just wasn’t worth it. I chucked it in after six weeks.
Several of my friends have had practically no side effects, lost loads of weight and look amazing.
Am I alone or do other people have similar tales of MJ disappointment?

I had severe constipation despite trying everything! I was going once a week.

MidLifeResurgence74 · 08/02/2025 19:24

Me! I did about 8 weeks in the summer and was so incredibly ill almost immediately. I stayed on 2.5mg but the nausea was so bad I couldn’t eat anything at all. And then one day I woke up with diarrhoea that lasted for 9 days straight, and I just threw the towel in. I couldn’t believe how bad I felt. Like the worst morning sickness ever! And I tried and tried to eat clean but it was impossible to eat through the nausea.

I then started again on 2.5mg this year. A) no side effects bar constipation B) didn’t really suppress my appetite at all so it seems like I ‘wasted’ my chance for it to work?

Verlaine · 09/02/2025 12:06

@MidLifeResurgence74 most people don’t have a lot of appetite suppression on 2.5mg. In trials most didn’t achieve that until 5mg or higher.

EmeraldDreams73 · 09/02/2025 12:12

I'm struggling with it here too. 2.5mg was fine and I lost weight the first month.

5mg was fine in terms of side effects (other than constipation but I have a chronic condition and take endless drugs to prevent being the other way 24/7, so that was welcome). No weight loss on 5mg tho and not much suppression at all.

Went up to 7.5mg and omg the nausea and sulphur burps were horrendous. I felt dreadful but still only lost a couple more pounds. I've stayed on 7.5 for another month and the burps have gone thank God but still not losing weight/suppression seems to have gone.

I haven't got the nerve to go up and am thinking of just stopping as I really can't afford it either, but I'm gutted.

I've had to stop after 2 weeks. Officially I'm skipping a week, but I won't be resuming. Likewise I was okay for the first few days and it all went downhill from there. Back and tummy pains, horrendous reflux and bloating. Totally unable to sleep or work. Taking a ton of medication to try and manage symptoms. The diarrhoea has only started in the past few days. I've felt horrendous. It was working - good appetite suppression on 2.5 mg. Does anyone know how long it takes to get out of your system completely? I heard the half life is 5 days. I was hoping to feel better by now.

Hi, interested to hear how long it took you to feel back to normal after stopping. I'm having a similar experience after my second dose of 2.5mg. I have the most extreme food aversion I've ever had in my life and I'm having episodes of what I think are hypoglycemia (likely made much worse due to being unable to eat) Ive not been able to function at all since Friday morning because I feel so terrible.
Hopefully you're feeling much better now?

bigboykitty · 16/02/2025 08:08

Hi @Anna208 , sorry to hear you're suffering so much too. I'm still the same, unfortunately. I haven't managed to sleep for more than an hour or two for more than a month. I'm having investigations, but so far nothing has been found. I'm just existing at the moment and can't do anything more than the basics. I force myself to eat little bits, but have diarrhoea any time I eat. It's 3 weeks now since I last injected. How long is it for you?

Twiglets1 · 16/02/2025 08:14

I tried Ozempic and had to give up after a couple of weeks as it made me so ill with vomiting. And I was on the lowest possible dose!

I know most people don’t get extreme side effects. But some people do and it doesn’t help to change the injection site, I tried that.

Edited to say the side effects did stop soon after I stopped taking it, within a couple of days for me.

Omg im so sorry you're still feeling so unwell that's terrifying. I hope you get some resolution soon.
I last injected on Thursday night so I'm less than 72 hrs in. I hope to god that's not the case for me.
Sorry you're feeling so poorly. I really do hope you get sorted soon

SulkySeagull · 16/02/2025 08:16

@BookishType read the room.

knitnerd90 · 16/02/2025 08:18

I had to stop Ozempic as a result. I couldn't keep solid food down and was constantly bloated and burping. I was worried about permanent gastroparesis.

As I have diabetes my doctor agreed to try me on Mounjaro and that was better. It might be worth trying one of the other GLP-1s but I seem to hear consistently that Mounjaro is the easiest for side effects.

Thanks for your reply. Can I please ask what side effects you were having and how long you'd been taking the drug?

I was only able to take it for 2 weeks.

Side effects: sulphur burps/constipation/ vomiting violently.

EmeraldDreams73 · 16/02/2025 11:09

I've made it up to 7.5 but have stuck with that for 3 months now as I'm too scared to go any higher. Lost a stone at the very beginning but since then I've got used to it and am pretty much staying the same. The sulphur burps are so bad that I'm now titrating back down and giving up. I'm really sad as it's cost a fortune but I can't justify it any more.

Dunkou · 16/02/2025 11:24

I had a lot of side effects - extreme nausea, couldn't eat, flu like symptoms, dizziness. I think a lot of it was down to low blood pressure, as I have naturally low blood pressure and MJ lowers it further. I also tend to have blood sugar dips even without MJ.

I dropped right back to 1.25mg and 7 weeks later I'm still on that, and have lost a pound a week. I'm going to try now to increase a bit, as didn't get side effects last jab so seem to tolerate it better. I couldn't have carried on with 2.5mg - I dropped to 2mg, then 1.6mg for a few weeks and it was still intolerable. I get reasonable suppression on 1.25mg.

BackToWegovy · 16/02/2025 11:35

I was ok for a few months on Mounjaro and then developed intolerable side effects at lower and lower doses. I had vomiting, sulphur burps, cramping and diarrhoea and couldn’t continue. I have been ok on Wegovy though.

AndThereSheGoes · 16/02/2025 11:43

Why us the dose increased after a month if it's working does anyone know? Do you build up a tolerance or something?

I wonder who is more disposed to being ill. Maybe should do our own research on here. I got headaches on the pill and think I have high hormone levels as periods were regular and easy (feel shit menopausal because I guess they were high before). Not sure if the jab will work better or worse on me.

Dressinggownlife · 16/02/2025 12:28

Day 2 on Mounjaro, headaches, feel sick all day, feel tired, but at night I got about 3 hours sleep. It feels like morning sickness.
few years ago was on Saxender and again had to come off as felt so ill. I had hoped this would be different but feels exactly the same side effects.
I wonder why some people don’t feel anything.

Twiglets1 · 16/02/2025 14:09

It is a mystery why some people don’t seem to get any bad side effects whereas for others our bodies act like we’ve been poisoned.

I think it’s something like 80 percent have no side effects or incredibly minimal, for those who can’t tolerate it is a small percentage, so I guess it’s why is that small percentage impacted.

but it’s the same for all drugs. The is always a small minority who can’t take them.

Manclad · 17/02/2025 17:05

I had no side effects for three weeks but then after the fourth dose 72 hours later I was experiencing the same things mentioned here sulphur burping, stomach gargling, unable to eat more than 500 calories of food a day, diarrhoea etc. I had a week off and then had a new 2.5mg jab. Exact same thing has happened. I’m 8 days post jab and constantly feeling dreadful with stomach pains and diarrhoea. Saw my GP this morning who has prescribed Buscopan and Omneprazole. Hoping this works because hate feeling like this. Have already disposed of the pen. Won’t be taking anymore doses.

Anyone know how long these side effects should last after the final injection? I’m on day 8

Sorry you are having awful side effects. I think the time for them to stop varies from person to person. The half life is 5 days after jab but it can take up to 25 days to be completely out of your system. Personally it was 2 weeks after my last (it was my first and only) jab before I felt substantially better.

TribulationPeriwinkle · 18/02/2025 11:18

A couple of weeks for me, too.

Manclad · 18/02/2025 12:26

Buscopan has definitely helped a lot. I’m just reliant on them every 4/5 hours at the moment but I’ll take that compared to the last few days! Fingers crossed things clear up over the next few days.

I don't know U.K. regulations but in the US the lowest doses (0.25mg ozempic and 2.5mg mounjaro) aren't licensed as therapeutic doses, only for titration. Doctors can't prescribe them for more than a month. The data say that most people require at least twice that to see therapeutic benefit; the smaller doses only exist so you don't get violently ill.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 19/02/2025 05:46

I had a very bad reaction to my first jab but luckily that was a one off.

I was talking to my Diabetes nurse (my prescription is through my. GP). She said she has around 80 patients on MJ and only one had to stop because the side effects were so bad. Obviously that's just one small cohort but it does sound as though a small percentage of users are very unlucky with the side effects.
