gallbladder removed and using Mounjaro

Annie1919 · 02/12/2024 12:01

I'd like to start Mounjaro but have had my gallbladder removed. Is anyone using Mounjaro without a gallbladder? How is it working out for you?

Hi there, I had my gallbladder removed and it’s working great for me! Minimal side effects, good suppression and the weight is coming down. Happy days! :)

ThreeTescoBags · 02/12/2024 12:32

Fine. No problems at all.

There seems to be some issues with how some of the online questionnaires are worded re gallbladder issues. I'm not a medical practitioner of any sort so this is just from reading other posts and my own experience...

People are not approved for mounjaro if they have ongoing gallbladder problems. I don't consider I have gallbladder problems because I don't have a gallbladder and have had no issues as a result of that in the 3 years I haven't had it. I therefore tick no to that question but always disclose in the additional information box that I have had my gallbladder removed (along with the pancreatitis it caused before it was removed).

GreatFinch · 02/12/2024 12:36

As above the wording can be ambiguous. I'm with oushk and have told them I had my gallbladder removed (20+years ago) and it was not an issue. I think some (Eg med express) group 'gallbladder problems' in with a variety of other things that would get you auto rejected when if someone actually looked at what you were saying it wouldnt be a problem. But always best to be honest.

HansHolbein · 02/12/2024 12:38

Had mine removed a few years ago and I take it. No problems and no side effects.

Darlinghag · 02/12/2024 14:57

Its mostly improved things for me. My gallbladder was taken out in 2015 and I started with dumping syndrome in 2017. The ‘constipation’ side effect not just makes me more normal!!

Pumpkinforever · 02/12/2024 15:00

My gall bladder was whipped out 10 years ago. I have been on MJ for a month. The only problem I have had is mild constipation but that’s it.

Finchbon · 02/12/2024 15:37

Echo the others. Had mine out earlier this year and was told to wait 3 months before starting Mounjaro. Now been taking it 3 months and no issues seen

SurreyisSunny · 02/12/2024 22:20

I had mine out in February. I do get side effects from mounjaro - vomiting when increasing doses, diarrhoea and feeling nauseous which is a bit like I felt when I had morning sickness. I don’t think the side effects are linked to not having a gallbladder though.

Linds38 · 07/12/2024 08:03

I have taken 2 doses so far and am struggling with diarrhoea non stop, started on day 3 last time, but on day 1 this time - know it’s a common side effect, but is making me feel awful. Hope it stops soon as I know it’s working well as suppressing my appetite day 1-5 (was still very hungry on days 6-7). Know I have to give it some time, but am dreading this lasting any longer as completely wiped out.

I had my gall bladder removed approx 20yrs ago. I've been on glp1 medications for 2yrs and not had any problems. We all react differently though. My prescriber and GP both know I'm on glp1 medications and had my gb removed x

Racmoo99 · 28/12/2024 20:24

Can I ask what pharmacy you're purchasing through? I had my gallbladder out 16/12 so I've emailed Medexpress to ask if they'd now prescribe it to me again, waiting to see what they say as I had such good results prior to my gallstones acting up.

HansHolbein · 28/12/2024 20:25

@Racmoo99 I use Asda

Thank you all for the feed back. I've applied to Healthexpress & had a bit of trouble with form as they kept emailing me for more information. Each time I filled form in again they emailed saying they needed more information. Finally, I phoned them & explained I did not have a Gallbladder. The girl said she would update my application & I would either hear from them or receive Mounjaro which needed signature on delivery. I've been worried that having no Gallbladder would cause problems, but after reading the replies here I feel better about it. I am a but concerned about bowel issues as I also have Divaticulur problems. However, my biggest concern are my poor knees & I can't have replacements until I've lost weight so fingers crossed & thank you all. xxx

Supercat66 · 29/04/2025 11:54

I'm about to start on it
Had gallbladder removed few years ago

eulmh · 11/05/2025 17:23

I too have had mine out. I only started Friday so cannot tell you of any side effects as of yet but my concern was they wouldn’t let me do it but it wasn’t a problem.

purpleshortcake2021 · 10/06/2025 22:23

I saw a diabetic nurse prior to starting MJ and asked if it was an issue that I had no gallbladder and she confirmed it wasn’t ….

Can I ask how long the side effects last? Is it permanent or just for a few days while your. Indy adjusts?

I'm so pleased to hear from this group again. Somehow, I managed to get lost & couldn't find it anymore.
I have no gallbladder & had two weeks of nausea, diarrhoea & cramps. I'm 71 so I was worried it might be age related too. But, it stopped. I'm now 5 weeks in & still on sane strength as advised by Healthexpress as I'm losing steadily. On 12th May my SW was 140.01. 10th June CW 134.60.
I hope everyone is doing ok?

Col28 · 12/06/2025 11:27

Could anyone let me know how moving onto the next strength of Mounjaro made them feel? Were side effects really bad for everyone?

Scarlettpixie · 12/06/2025 22:12

I have no gallbladder (removed about 11 years ago) and have been on MJ since the end of October. My side effects have been manageable and I have lost 40lb. I have had some nausea, the worst times I knew why (pizza, chinese) and indigestion (over eating or wine) but no V or D. I have also had bloating/ fullness usually after moving up but again manageable. Pepto bismol, peptac or alka seltzer usually sort me out.

I buy from Oushk who know my history and are great. My first supplier changed their policy after a couple of pens and then refused (IQ Doctor).

i have done 2 pens on each dose and starting 12.5 tomorrow.

How did you manage on Mounjaro? Had the same issue.. gallstones/pancreatitis. Did you have any side effects?

I've just had my 1 year mounjaro anniversary. I've not had any pancreas related side effects.

Side effects I have had: I have had a loose tummy and / or felt nauseous at times, mostly in the day or two after jabbing in the first few weeks, then when going up a dose whilst my stomach adapts. The first three months, I was incredibly tired, but that did get better. I've had fairly significant hairloss, but luckily, I have very thick hair so it wasn't noticeable and it is now growing back. I've also recently started getting really sensitive skin on my wrists and inner arms, it's hard to describe but it sort of feels like a friction burn, again in the first day or two after jabbing. Ive also been really really cold.

That said, I've never had all those things at once and they are all manageable, it's never been enough for me to even think twice when weighed against the benefits I've seen. I've lost over 5 stone in a year and now have a BMI in the healthy range. It's changed my life in so many ways. Just a one example, my 6 year old has been teaching me to do flips on her trampoline for the last few months, we've had such a laugh together, a year ago I would have simply refused to try.

I think the best advice if you do want to give it a go is to be completely open and honest with your prescriber and contact them to discuss if you have any concerns.

Good luck 👍

I had mine out in 2008 and I’ve been on MJ since October. Lost 6 1/2 stone. I use ME a lot, I think they’ve changed their wording recently to active gallbladder problems. They’ve always been fine prescribing to me.
