BMI 29.8, do I just put on a few more lbs?!

Buttons0522 · 29/10/2024 18:26

I have reached a point where I am seriously unhappy with my weight. It has crept up after two children and I’m now mid thirties and it’s harder to shift. I’ve been buying bigger, baggier clothes and ignoring it but whilst attending an appointment with the nurse for something else today I asked her to weigh me to calculate my BMI and it is 29.8 - I’m appalled!

From what I’ve read I’d need a BMI of 30 to qualify for mounjaro, so I’m just under. What should my next steps be? Put on a few lbs - will anyone have to weigh me? Enter a slightly higher reading into the online form?! Will my GP be contacted? I’m a novice, please talk me through it…

Nobody had to weigh me I had to input my weight Asda asked for a photo of the scales wouldn't it be a pity if you had particularly heavy things in your pockets.

You're asking people on an open forum if you should lie to get the medication? This and the pp giving you deceit tips don't help with the 'Mounjaro and it's users are frauds and willing to lie to get the skinny jab' reputation.

Why not go through the forms and do what you want to do instead. No need to ask for encouragement here.

Your GP SHOULD be contacted to keep an eye on you. Hopefully neither of you would do this for any other serious medication.

spuddy4 · 29/10/2024 18:51

There's a reason why it's only prescribed for people with a BMI of 30 or over. You can lie if you want but you have to ask yourself would you do it for any other drug and take the risk? Ultimately it doesn't matter what strangers tell you on the internet but most providers inform your GP so it's added to your medical records in case of any emergency. I had no idea my doctor knew I was taking it until I was there for something unrelated and they asked me how I was getting on with it.

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 29/10/2024 19:08

The benefits outweigh the risks with these injections only if someone’s excess weight is such that they’re at proper risk of obesity-related health problems. Even then it’s a travesty that these injections which come with potentially serious side effects are being seen as the easier option.

Have you done enough research to be sure this is the best option for you OP?

Half the women in my fitness class seem to be on these things. It’s like a special social club. It reminds me of when I was much younger and enjoyed the socially exclusive feeling of standing outside the pub smoking…

This is why people shit on WLI 😞

Lincoln24 · 29/10/2024 19:35

Medicines are not that exact a science. It doesn't magically start being safer or more effective if you put on a couple of pounds. It's really not going to make a difference in that way. Having said that, there are side effects and risks you should consider before you proceed.

You'll need to lie to get it, so it just comes down to how you view that ethically. Some people on here will tell you that's a terrible sin, others are wholly pragmatic. It's a moral question so no one can answer it for you, only you can decide.

TheGoingGetsEasyAfterItGetsTough · 29/10/2024 19:57

I'm "wholly pragmatic" so I understand that people will do what they want to do but publicly and casually talking about or encouraging lieing to qualify to obtain prescription medication is both irresponsible and stupid. What other prescription medication can one do that about without being seriously shut down - and rightly so? What other prescription meds do people argue about and basically say they can do what they want because it isn't "magically unsafe" and so on? Doesn't it show just how unserious people are on/see Mounjaro?

As a pp said, no wonder people shit on WLI. I agree and it's probably because it seems like a joke to anyone - including users and potential users.

ChimneyRock · 29/10/2024 19:57

How come it's OK to be prescribed them if your BMI is, say, 30.2 but not if it's 29.8?
People don't stop taking the jabs once their weight hits a BMI of 30 on the way down to 'healthy.'
How come it's OK to continue then?

Mysticmaiden2024 · 29/10/2024 20:01

If you are of a higher risk (health conditions such as diabetes, dont know what else) or ethnic minority, you can get mounjaro with a BMI of 27 or above. You can always try and apply and see what happens? Some ask to see a photo of scales, some ask for a full body photo with tight fitting clothes as well as BMI and other details.

Probably best to ask the people who set the prescribing guidelines.

HappyAsASandboy · 29/10/2024 20:39

The online prescribers don't all need a BMI of 30. Several that I filled in were happy to prescribe at a bit under BMI of 30 without other complications.

I would fill in some online prescription question sets and see if anyone will prescribe with your truthful height/weight.

memememe · 29/10/2024 20:44

Have you double checked your height as you might be shorter than you used to be? I always thought I was 5'4" but when I was measured recently I was less.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/10/2024 21:11

No people shouldn't lie to get mj

But what is .2 in lbs to get your bmi to 30

Height depending Prob a couple of lbs

Buttons0522 · 29/10/2024 22:43

Grateful for your replies, thank you. I’ve applied online with today’s measurements and photo and we’ll see what comes of it.

Not sure what ‘people shit on WLI’ means if I’m honest, unless you’re referring to a common side effect!!

Morally, yes I’m willing to bend the rules by 1cm or 1lb if it will help me obtain something which will make weight loss easier. I have had issues with my body image my entire life since a small child (thanks mum, special k, Kate Moss, 00s media etc.) and have only ever been happy with how I look for one short period in my life, when I was verging developing an eating disorder due to being a heartbroken 19 year old and unable to eat anything! And that is a very sad state of affairs. If there is what is in many cases magic medication (not without risks and side effects of course) which will help me be healthier and happier then of course I want a piece of the action.

Also FWIW yes I’ve bent the rules to obtain other medication before 😊 Sometimes when the system doesn’t work for you and ‘computer says no’, you have to work the system!

What you do is your business, but I wouldn't personally take this medication at an overweight BMI. The benefits would not out weigh the risks enough.

What are those risks? People say this but the risks and side effects aren't worse than they are for statins, blood pressure medication, diabetic medication.

Haveanaiceday · 29/10/2024 22:56

It does seem strange that it's considered ok to keep taking it once you get under 30 if this is just based on health risks. More likely its based on the public image of the drug.

MiseryIn · 29/10/2024 22:58

I started at about 31 but I'm under now. In fact probably went under within the first 4 weeks. I'm short though and as another poster said - I'm actually an inch shorter than I thought I was so my bmi was possibly wrong anyway.
I do know people who have even refused on the basis of their photo though.

WeAllHaveWings · 29/10/2024 23:06

@tobee the risks are stated with the medication.

Would you take statins, high blood pressure or diabetics medication if you didn't have the condition?

horrorcicada · 29/10/2024 23:07

Lying about your weight or intentionally gaining it to procure medication is (at best) morally dubious but also potentially dangerous. All medication comes with risks.

Ultimately it’s your body and nobody can make the choice for you.

I don't think it is strange at all. I take BP medication to control my HBP. I take MJ to control my severe obesity. I take prescription omeprazole for acid reflux. All have risks.

If I didn't have HBP, reflux or the issues that led me to severe obesity I wouldn't take any of them.

It is a treatment tested and approved for obesity (and of course diabetes) and the exponentially significant health issues that come with obesity.

Haveanaiceday · 29/10/2024 23:23

But will you stop taking the MJ when your bmi falls under 30? Or keep taking it till you reach a healthy BMI? Or if you get to a healthy BMI and decide to maintain the weight so stop taking it, but you start gaining weight again. Would you start taking it again once you notice you are gaining to help your maintenance or would you wait till your BMI goes over 30.

healthybychristmas · 29/10/2024 23:29

Personally I would lose half an inch off my height.

PrimalLass · 29/10/2024 23:30

Just take an inch off your height. They don't check that.
