Gastric sleeve and weight loss shots

MyFirmFatball · 23/10/2024 21:20

I had a gastric sleeve 6 years ago, lost over 5 stone, but put 2 back on during lockdown from 2020 to now.
I feel such a failure, the sleeve is a fabulous tool BUT unfortunately I rewarded myself with slider food after wfh all through lockdown. This was mainly chocolate.
Today I ordered Mounjaro for the first time. I’m excited and KNOW I have to sort out my mindset again.
Has anyone else had a gastric sleeve then ended up on weight loss injections?
I need to lose 3 stone

Is that not a terrible idea?

Why? Is it contraindicated?

OP did you tell the prescriber that you've had a gastric sleeve?

Arielsmummy · 23/10/2024 21:33

I believe you have to have had the sleeve more than a year to then be eligible for mj and you do have to tell the prescriber. I know someone who had the sleeve 14 months ago and weight loss slowed and are now starting mj

I thought the sleeve makes you less hungry anyway, wouldn't taking mounjaro on top be dangerous?

MyFirmFatball · 23/10/2024 21:38

Yes, I told the prescriber about the sleeve. In fact I was originally going to get the medication from the surgeon who did my op, he was happy to prescribe but the cost was outrageous, so I didn’t bother

It does make you less hungry, and so long as you stick to high protein food it works a treat. Unfortunately things like chocolate buttons don’t fill you up. I should NEVER have changed the way I was eating once I’d been sleeved but covid hit, and I returned to comfort food that was easy to get down, simply as a reward for working from home which I hated. I’m so angry with myself because it cost me £10k

OK and then (sorry I'm not being deliberately stupid 😂) how will mounjaro help? Couldn't you just go back to eating a better diet?

Wow. Obviously if the OP could just do that then she wouldn't have got a gastric sleeve in the first place or be considering expensive medication!

Exactly that ! When you first have the sleeve, there’s a long healing process. It’s impossible to eat too much of anything and the weight drops. You get used to only eating mainly protein and soon forget about junk food. However, once lockdowns started, I felt so low, I started to introduce food that I considered a treat.
I have tried desperately to go back to my original simple eating plan BUT the food noise is always there. I’m hoping the jabs will reset my mind, and by losing regularly, I’m sure I can get to the stage of forgetting or craving sweet food.
Im hoping within a year, the weight loss alone will motivate me not to eat rubbish. Im sure that had we not have had lock down, I wouldn’t have slipped so much, because I would have been very aware of weight gain affecting my office clothes. Whereas wfh meant I just drifted into weight gain over 2 years, wearing sloppy clothes at home.

Is using mounjaro changing your mindset?

weathergirl289 · 23/10/2024 22:48

It's a fair point though. The OP seems like an intelligent person from her posts, she does seem well aware of which foods will help. As it's only 2st that you're looking to lose (unless I've read it wrong sorry) then the most realistic and lasting way to get there will be to do exactly what you already know- follow the healthier eating you did initially and the weight will come off. It doesn't sound like any injections are needed for you from what you've said. And being angry at yourself won't be helping, yes maybe chocolate buttons during Covid didn't help but they were comforting at the time and you're here to tell the tale. Sounds like you did what a lot of us did in lockdown and indulged a bit. Perfectly understandable and not anything to be ashamed of Flowers

weathergirl289 · 23/10/2024 22:50

Cross posted sorry OP

Is using mounjaro changing your mindset?

I won’t know until I try. I’m hoping once the cravings go, and I can see the scales actually moving down, it will motivate me.
At the moment, I’m exercising 3 times a week plus walking but still not losing despite eating healthily. When I weigh myself after a week and haven’t lost a thing, I feel so demoralised. I KNOW I should keep at it and the weight should drop but if it was that easy, nobody would be overweight.

Of course you won’t and I apologise. On reflection I realise that my question was pretty stupid.

Sorry and all the best.

I’ve had a sleeve and currently on MJ.

I put weight on after my last unplanned pregnancy.

it’s working brilliantly. I don’t have anywhere near as much to lose as pre sleeve.

whilst the sleeve does reduce hunger it does eventually come back, that’s why they tell people to really get the most out of WLS during the first year or so.

I never battled with my weight until after my children.

nougatcougar · 24/10/2024 00:39

I'm really similar to you - sleeve 12 years ago, lost 5st then in the last few years 2st has crept back on and has been really hard to shift. Also have developed bad habits around wfh - comfort/ boredom eating - actual hunger not an issue still, and capacity is still tiny. But I can drip feed unhealthy food if I'm feeling self destructive
Been on mj 6 weeks and lost about 12lb, which I'm delighted with. The starting dose 2.5mg was and is still sufficient to remove all my cravings, put me off alcohol. Had to be careful about acid reflux- it got worse but has settled down, I've stayed off acidic/ spicy food and booze which has helped. It has stopped me chasing the dopamine I get from snacking, and I think the better habits will stick, as I've been rewarded with my clothes fitting again
My previous problem with diets now I'm a menopausal lady is that I'd starve myself and fight this maddening drive to eat, then get no reward as it made little difference and was hard to sustain.
Good luck, you know your body and this injection does wear off towards the end of the week, so maybe delay taking it a day if it feels a bit much and don't feel pressure to up the dose if you're finding current lev effective

Thanks so much. I’m glad it’s working for you. I’m post menopausal and I do exactly what you did, starve myself/stick to low calories but no weight loss. Then think sod it, I’m having a treat. It really is all about mindset isn’t it. As you say, fitting into lovely clothes is really motivating. I’ve got a wardrobe FULL of nice things I used to wear. I just know that once I lose this weight, I’ll definitely keep it off. I don’t want to feel miserable all the time. The first 2 years after the sleeve, I felt incredible. I need that buzz again.

Not yet. Ordering my first pen in payday as my BMI is 43.

Its a genuine question. Don't the surgery and the pen do the same thing? Why would you need both?

Funking wow 😂

Get over yourself, sometimes people don't know and are asking genuine questions.

I don't understand the need for both. Maybe someone could actually explain instead of assuming I'm trying to be a dick.

Over time the gastric sleeve stretches and the hunger does return. People assume you can’t gain weight after WLS but it’s actually quite common to regain SOME though not as much as your original starting weight.

Can I ask which supplier those that have a sleeve are using? Bonus points if also had gallbladder out, thank you
