Hi I'm on 5mg mounjaro as 2.5 wasn't working and I'm eating a 1200 calorie diet sometimes 800 as just not hungry! I'm 17st. But don't seem to be losing as much as everyone. Any tips? I'm drinking water and having protein. For breakfast I had 3 eggs with mushrooms and a protein shake drink for lunch with grapes and then a beef casserole for dinner. Do I have to eat 1200 calories or can I eat less??

First, try not to compare to other people's losses, you don't know what their individual circumstances are. Secondly, 2.5mg isn't meant to "work" in the sense of producing weight loss, it's to get your body used to the drug.

How much are you losing each week? Have you worked out your TDEE calorie total, and then subtracted 500 calories - that is what you should aim for, for a sustainable weight loss of 2 pounds a week. No one can tell you if 1200 is ok, or if it should be more or less without you working out the TDEE which is based off your height, weight and activity levels.

Mygosh · 21/10/2024 19:03

How long have you been on the injection? I didn't notice much in the first month, about 3kg. Have you had your thyroid/hormones checked?

Personally I'd stick to the 1200 calories, because once you stop taking the injection, you'll need a realistic amount of food to survive on.

I recommend you get a food diary app, it sounds like you are eating too much protein, which is stored as fat in the body. The body cannot store protein.

Hollietree · 21/10/2024 19:12

How much weight have you lost? Try not to compare yourself to others - everyone’s body/metabolism is totally different.

I’ve been on MJ for 3 months and I lose an average of 1lb per week. I eat around 1000cals a day, do circuit training 3 times a week, plus walk 10k+ steps per day. other people doing the same thing might lose more/less than me as their body/metabolism is totally different. It’s all about working out what works for your body. And remind yourself that a slow and steady weight loss means you will be more likely to maintain it later. Lose weight too rapidly and it is more likely to go back on again quickly.

My tdee is 2100 but I just don't eat that at all!! I struggle to do 1200. Not really losing anything and I'm 5ft 5 and I weigh 16st 9lbs

I am also on 5mg it's been 6 weeks and I've lost 4kg (9lbs). I don't count calories. I just eat when I feel a bit hungry and if I haven't eaten much for the day I have something small. I don't eat much protein as before and this may contribute to the weight loss. Sometimes we do not need as much protein as we think, as we have had years of protein and fat storage, I believe everyone's body is different, you have to figure out what works and not works for you. Also patience is key your body is getting used to the drug, so just keep going.

What's best for breakfast on 5mg mounjaro? Cause at the moment I have 3 eggs and mushrooms.

OP posts:
CameronStrike · 21/10/2024 19:44

How much are you actually losing?

You can have whatever you like. Eggs are a good option as they are low calorie and high protein but eat whatever you feel like.

NewCoralLeader · 21/10/2024 19:55

I'm not

I'm not

You must be losing something?

Doggymummar · 21/10/2024 19:59

Three eggs is loads, I couldn't eat that, but it's up to you. I follow Fast 800 loosely so I would have one egg scrambled. However, I also have one meal a day and fast for 24 hours. We are all on our own journey.

NewCoralLeader · 21/10/2024 20:03

If I am then my scales are not showing it.

OP posts:
HoneyB2025 · 21/10/2024 20:05

If you are not hungry you do not need to have breakfast, I know nutritionist say breakfast is the ‘most important meal of the day’ but I don’t follow it. Eggs is a good choice but you can eat it anytime of the day when you are hungry. I typically have my first meal around 12pm sometimes 1pm or 2pm and second meal later in the evening. You may not be losing because maybe you are eating too many calories for what your body needs. So try not calorie counting and just listen to your body and only eat when you are hungry. For instance I was someone who didnt lose easily because I was probably eating too many calories for what my body needs even though I didn’t eat much. I have had so many years of fat storage, so maybe the older I got my body needs less calories to function.

thursdaymurderclub · 21/10/2024 20:08

are you not counting things like drinks.. tea, coffee, milk, sugar? alcohol! i don't think its possible to not lose when you are eating so little under your calories!!

morbidcuriosity · 21/10/2024 20:11

At the start, if I had 3 eggs and mushrooms for breakfast there would be no way I could eat lunch or dinner.. I sometimes have 2 eggs scrambled for lunch and maybe some Cucumber or beetroot with it.. then a small dinner later.

Are you having 3 meals a day? If yes maybe 1 of them should just be a protein yoghurt or something..

Have a count up of your calories over a couple days see what you are actually consuming and go from there maybe..

HoneyB2025 · 21/10/2024 20:15

Prior to the injection I did not drink juices. I used to drink Coke Zero but for some reason now on the injection I do not crave fizzy drinks any longer. So I mostly drink water or tea (stevia for sweetener) and hot chocolate or alcohol occasionally. Also watch your movement, I move around a lot staying active. So monitor that as well.

soupfiend · 21/10/2024 20:15

Stay off the scales, get on them in a months time, be accurate and robust about your calorie counting.

It is coming off, the scales will show fluctuations, normal body ups and downs and you'll think you're not losing. Theres another thread about this at the moment talking about stalls and plateaus and what nots. If you are eating less than your body needs, you are losing weight, scales or no scales.

InfoSecInTheCity · 21/10/2024 20:17

Can you just clarify that you mean you have not lost weight at all, or that you are not losing as much as you'd like.

There's some posters on Mounjaro threads who say that they are not losing much or anything but are actually losing 2ish lbs a week, they were just hoping for more, so it's helpful to be really clear. I think some people expect to be losing 7lbs a week which is unrealistic.

Manyshelves · 21/10/2024 20:18

If you’re not losing weight then you’re not in a calorie deficit. Maybe weigh every day and do a weekly average to take account of fluctuations

CameronStrike · 21/10/2024 20:57

If you're 17 stone and genuinely eating 1200 calories a day you would be losing weight. Something isn't right.

SilenceInside · 21/10/2024 21:22

Are you 17st or 16st 9lbs?

How long have you been on Mounjaro?

What was your starting weight and what is your weight now?

Have you tracked every single thing you're eating for a week or so, and checked that you are accurately at least 500 calories below TDEE so 1600 or less average each day? That means weighing and measuring everything precisely.

TheGoingGetsEasyAfterItGetsTough · 21/10/2024 22:54

If you're not losing, then you need to reduce your calories some more and/or up your activity levels to burn more calories. Eat healthy and nutritious meals when you do eat but you don't have to get to 1200 each day. You can try twice a day or OMAD if you're able to.

3 boiled eggs a day is fine but maybe make it two instead. Boiled egg is healthier than scrambled or fried but as long as it's within a good calorie intake, whichever way is fine.

For many people with weight issues, 1200 daily calories will not help them lose weight but they can maintain with that.

InfoSecInTheCity · 21/10/2024 23:14

No one should be advising you to eat less than 1200 calories. With a TDEE of 2100, if you are genuinely eating 1200 calories or less you should be losing weight.

If you are not losing weight then either:

  • you are eating more calories than you think
  • you have a metabolic disorder and should ask for tests from your GP
  • you are retaining a lot of water, could also be a health issue.

Can you post a couple of days of all food and drink so we can see what your diet looks like?

Manyshelves · 21/10/2024 23:21

do the James smith academy free calculator to work out your calorie needs: it’s accurate

Then log everything you’re eating as at 17 stone I lost weight on 2400 calories!

dcbgr · 21/10/2024 23:21

If you are forcing yourself to eat you are unlikely to lose weight. Listen to your body and let MJ work. Many people lose weight effortlessly. For those who do not the best strategy seems to be: eat mainly protein; get enough vitamins and good fats; do not force yourself to eat. Cut all food groups except protein and eat 1-2g a day per kg of goal body weight; especially stop carbs and fried and beige food. Give it time.
