Mounjaro side effects/IBS and weight gain moan

Mumofboys2006 · 05/10/2024 09:31

Hi all, having looked into it and read a lot of threads here I’ve decided I’m going to try Mounjaro.

My background is weight gain post-menopause completely resistant to intermittent fasting and regular exercise including weight training. I have been a yo-yo dieter all my life but have always successfully maintained my weight even post children in a 9.5-10/11 stone range - I’m not that tall (5’4) but because I’m quite toned that has worked for me.

I was horrified how much weight I gained when I was weighed recently for my over 50s check. I know it was creeping on despite my best efforts and I was expecting a stone but it’s a few stone and I’m now in the obese range. I’ve never been this big ever. I am post -menopause and think I may be insulin resistant. 5:2 diet has worked in the past but not this time. I’ve probably tried every diet under the sun tbh! I use net diary and never eat more than 1000 cals a day. A lot less when fasting.

GP has prescribed orlistat but am really worried about side effects and pretty much most of the reviews are not encouraging.

I suffer from IBS so am concerned about bloating and general tummy problems.

I get the impression that Mounjaro is slightly better in terms of side effects as well as weight loss.

Any views/ thoughts are really appreciated.

Im getting so anxious about how much weight I’ve gained and how it seems to be completely out of my control 😭

I think Wegovy is supposed to be the least damaging for IBS. I have IBD and was directed to this. One of the key things all of them do is keep the food in the gut for longer, so this could be an issue for you depending on your type of IBD. I have found it does give me side effects. The weight loss has been very slow, around 0.5kg a week, but it has been steady. I think those with bowel issues tend to find it harder to lose due to the nature of the drug.

Shibr · 05/10/2024 09:37

Also, the drug is supposed to make you feel the need to eat less, so if you think eating less isn’t working for you, then it might not work as you hope.

Interesting. I am not sure what you mean by that. I haven’t gone into great depth into what I’ve been doing. If you think there’s something I should be trying pls do share.

Yes that’s exactly my concern. I don’t eat much at all.

Mumofboys2006 · 05/10/2024 09:40

but it’s true

it’s excuse after excuse after excuse

rather than just… i need to address my diet and i am sedentary but i am struggling to do that and perhaps the weight loss injections could help me on the way.

Which is fine obviously!

Snozzlemaid · 05/10/2024 09:43

The trouble is it affects everyone differently, so I would just say maybe give it a go. If your BMI is over 30 that is.
I've been extremely lucky in having no bad side effects but don't have IBD so can't give advice on that.
Hopefully someone who does will be along to give their experience on MJ for you.

I do know that MJ reduces insulin resistance, so there's a good chance it would help you.

Did you read my post?!?
I said I’m not sedentary. Are you just bored with nothing better to do?!
this is a last resort for me.

i’ll leave you to it Op
all the best

SilenceInside · 05/10/2024 09:45

@nootcoffee perhaps you could give your experience of the things the OP is actually asking about?

Mounjaro slows down your digestion, which I would imagine could affect you if you have IBS but it could be a positive or a negative, I don't really know!

There are some providers of Mounjaro that you can book a video or phone consultation with prior to anything being prescribed. Oushk is one I think. It might be worth discussing it with them.

Snozzlemaid · 05/10/2024 09:45

@Mumofboys2006 Unfortunately threads about weight loss injections always lure in negative responses.
Try to ignore them and hopefully you'll get some good advice too.

I hate to break it to you but you are wrong about this.

Blanketyre · 05/10/2024 09:48

Op, I'm in exactly the same position as you - I need to lose 2 stone to get to a healthy weight but have ibs. Watching with interest.

Thanks that’s useful.

Im not really someone who resorts to medication usually so any good providers are appreciated.

Honestly Op, if you eat around 1000cals every day, consistently I am not sure Mj will help.

It might make it easier to eat less than 1000cals. But that’s going to be quite unsafe. And the idea on MJ is that you still eat a good amount of calories but don’t over eat.

I mean this gently, but when you say you eat 1000cals a day, I think you do most days. But I suspect that you then have some days where you go a lot over. Meaning over a week of you take an average you are over. And perhaps not logging things properly.

If you are 1000cals every day, consistently, weight would come off even with insulin resistance and menopause. Because your body burns more than 1000cals a day.

If that does sound like you, the. Perhaps MJ would help. Some people do have side effects and some people don’t. It’s hard to predict and you should speak to a professional.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with taking MJ. But it doesn’t suit everyone and isn’t appropriate for everyone. But if you took it and only ate 500cals a day everyday, you wouldn’t end up with other health issues.

How helpful 🤨

OP, check out the many Mounjaro threads on here. People (and yes they’re people who have tried all the diets or people like me who found themselves for the first time in their lives overweight during menopause - and I’m someone with an active job and a 5x a week gym habit) have had incredible success with it.

In my case, I’ve had no side effects whatsoever. I did briefly think I was feeling particularly cold and that was because of MJ, but I think it was just because it was unseasonably chilly 😬 It really is a wonder drug.

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 05/10/2024 09:56

@Mumofboys2006 Have you seen a GP to check if are prediabetic? With IBS and already eating 1000kcal a day, if you are your GP could prescribe metformin or semaglutide tablets both of which would prevent diabetes developing and could help with weightloss.

Blanketyre · 05/10/2024 09:56

I think if you are insulin resistant then you hold onto weight even at 1200 cals a day - I do!

Isn't mounjaro supposed to help with insulin resistance, not just appetite suppression?

Yes, the trizapeptide in Mounjaro works in a similar way to semaglutide (Ozempic injections) to reduce A1C levels.

Motnight · 05/10/2024 10:03

I have all the symptoms of IBS ( not formally diagnosed) and have been on Mounjaro for 2 months. I have had 2 really awful episodes of IBS since then. Apart from that it appears to have helped my IBS symptoms. Everyone is different though.

Thanks yes I have. I had all my bloods done for over 50s health check as well as seeing a GP again afterwards. She prescribed orlestat. Can I go back and ask for semaglutide?
We do have type 2 diabetes in the family but I don’t have it at this point. What are the markers for pre-diabetic?

@Gladicalled - most days I eat less than 1000 calories. I’m not a binge eater. I don’t eat at sugar, very little fruit except berries, almond milk in my coffee, salad, as much protein as I can manage etc.

as I say I’m no stranger to diet and fitness as my weight has always been up and down.

Mounjaro is actually used as a treatment fir diabetes (and a side effect if that I’d weight loss).
If your weight gain is linked to insulin resistance, it makes sense it will help with your weight loss, regardless of the calory intake side of things.
