Mounjaro side effects/IBS and weight gain moan

Mumofboys2006 · 05/10/2024 09:31

Hi all, having looked into it and read a lot of threads here I’ve decided I’m going to try Mounjaro.

My background is weight gain post-menopause completely resistant to intermittent fasting and regular exercise including weight training. I have been a yo-yo dieter all my life but have always successfully maintained my weight even post children in a 9.5-10/11 stone range - I’m not that tall (5’4) but because I’m quite toned that has worked for me.

I was horrified how much weight I gained when I was weighed recently for my over 50s check. I know it was creeping on despite my best efforts and I was expecting a stone but it’s a few stone and I’m now in the obese range. I’ve never been this big ever. I am post -menopause and think I may be insulin resistant. 5:2 diet has worked in the past but not this time. I’ve probably tried every diet under the sun tbh! I use net diary and never eat more than 1000 cals a day. A lot less when fasting.

GP has prescribed orlistat but am really worried about side effects and pretty much most of the reviews are not encouraging.

I suffer from IBS so am concerned about bloating and general tummy problems.

I get the impression that Mounjaro is slightly better in terms of side effects as well as weight loss.

Any views/ thoughts are really appreciated.

Im getting so anxious about how much weight I’ve gained and how it seems to be completely out of my control 😭

Mounjaro works by reducing appetite. I am not sure if it helps with insulin resistance. I believe I have it. I have lost weight with Monjaro but quite slowly. About 2.5 stone in 6 months.

I also have a metabolism where I use relatively few calories.

The only way is to be brutally honest. I find I cannot use white carbs, any sort of bread at all or alcohol - even the occasional glass of wine because my weight will not shift.

The only thing that works for me is intermittent fasting and eating 2 small meals a day. I do mix it up and from time to time have 1 meal a day or change the times I fast.

semaglutide is what is used in mounjaro (and we go too if I remember well)

Blanketyre · 05/10/2024 10:34

Mj is tirpizine

Mumofboys2006 · 05/10/2024 10:37

Yes semglutide is sold as Wegovy which is believe isn’t as good if you have IBS.

OP I'm very much like you with IBS, medication induced weight gain, insulin resistance, etc and GP prescribed Orlistat. It was awful and I've decided to take the plunge with Mounjaro. I went with Voy and used a discount link to get it cheaper. Had a good experience with them and I'm sticking with them. There are many Voy discount links floating around here as well as other providers to choose from. x

I've been on it 11 weeks and lost two stone.
4 x 2.5 mg
4 x 5mg
3 x 7.5mg
I am Type 2 diabetic too.
I also have Ibs and diverticulitis.
I bought imodium
Buscapan.
Peppermint oil capsules.
Ginger root capsules and tea bags.( sometimes people feel sick like morning sickness .. l did on 5mg first week and the ginger root capsules helped).
The 2.5 was brilliant.
When l went onto 5mg l did have bloating and bad Diahorrea for the first work. But imodium and Buscapan really helped.
I took Peppermint oil for the wind and burps and cut back on any foods that didn't help with this.. like baked beans/ sprouts / cabbage etc.
Other than that I've had no side effects.
I altered my diet but found l didn't crave fatty foods and pastry and choc etc .. l don't buy them now.
I eat loads of protein.. fish/ chicken/ eggs/ feta.
Salads of different variety.
Vegetables and fruit.
I stop eating when l feel full.
The day before my jab is due l get a slight hunger pang and feel l want to eat more..but once l start eating l get full quick.
Everyone is different.
My daughter is on it and she sometimes gets constipated and also has IBS .
The 7.5mg has been the best for me and I'm thinking of staying on that dose another month.
I'm 66 and wanting to reverse my diabetes and hopefully get a new hip next year.
But even loosing two stone so far has had a great benefit to my osteoarthritis.
Good luck.
Feel free to PM me with any questions.
I'm opened minded and don't mind talking about anything bowel related.

I take oral semaglutide for diabetes, I also have IBS and I've had no issues.

Orlistat is a fat binder, did your GP check what you actually eat before prescribing it? It works by binding to fat and preventing it absorbing, instead expels it in orange, grease which can't always be controlled and is horrific if you have IBS. If you are already eating a low fat diet, Orlistat isn't going to help you lose weight. Especially if you aren't experiencing that effect within a couple of days of starting it.

Mounjaro probably would be worth it for you, with no other medication or health issues. Make sure you eat enough protein every day on it. Give it the first month at least, unless it really makes your IBS worse. 🤞

NewoIkkin · 05/10/2024 11:07

Purely anecdotal but I was on Orlistat for a couple of years over a decade ago. It did nothing for me - no side effects but no real weight loss either! I’m pretty sure that’s because I was eating a very low-fat diet anyway, and was overweight because of all the carbs and sugar I was consuming. I know people who had fairly good weight loss with it, but they all experienced some pretty horrible-sounding side effects.

I have IBS and it has been immeasurably better since I started on Mounjaro. My symptoms have basically vanished.

OP

I have just reluctantly thrown in the towel with Mounjaro 😢. Previously suffered with IBS-D but has been well managed and settled for years.

I have taken five doses of MJ and the diarrhoea has become intolerable (I literally shit myself this week). I cut dairy which seemed to help but unfortunately as the levels increase in my system I just couldn't tolerate it.

I'm gutted because I've dropped 11% of my body weight in this time, it's truly a wonder drug. Interestingly my mother is taking it and her only side effect is constipation which is more common.

I would say give it a go and see how your body reacts to it, that's the only way to tell and if you're lucky it can work wonders!

Best of luck
Jas

I always have mint capsules to hand and make ginger tea myself so will bear this in mind!

Just out of interest, what does net diary say your calories should be? 1000 seems quite low, especially if you are not sedentary. I use it to track my food every day, I've found it really helpful. Are you still weighing everything?

Mumofboys2006 · 05/10/2024 18:02

Hi, I’ve just adjusted my calories manually on it. I use the barcode scanner generally. I use their units to enter amounts.

Did you read my post?!?
I said I’m not sedentary. Are you just bored with nothing better to do?!
this is a last resort for me.

But it isn't going to work for you as you've said your lack of weight loss is not related to you reducing calories.

I thought it was the other way around? At least that is what my consultant advised!
