How did you choose between Wegovy and Mounjaro?

I have an appointment with my GP so hopefully will get some advice, but have been wondering how you chose between the two meds. I've done a lot of research and am finding it hard to decided.

I would strongly suggest neither. Having lost nearly 6 stone through dietary changes this past 8 months there is no way I'd be taking injections to reduce appetite, unless you're needing the injections due to diabetes of course. Reduce carbs, up water intake and be firm with yourself. I know it'll sound like I haven't got a clue but as someone who tipped the scales at morbidly obese I also considered the injections and weight loss surgery. I chose neither in the end and faced up to my own responsibility for my body. I would suggest you have a proper look at your own diet and take out breads, pastas, anything carb-heavy like that and be clear on your portion sizes as that's somewhere we all get muddled so easily. Good luck. As cliche as it may sound if I can do it then believe me so can you. Would post a before and after pic if it weren't so outing!

VioletsHeart · 28/08/2024 10:06

It was a straightforward choice for me: Mounjaro beats Wegovy for weightloss. If I'm taking medication to drop weight then I want it to work as well as possible.

Additionally reports fewer side effects Mounjaro than Wegovy.

And there have been shortages of Wegovy, although not now I believe.

This article in Healthline shares some of the key points

I'm 11 weeks in and have lost 24lb. I had a rough first two weeks but stopped almost completely week three. Some mild nausea, some reflux. If I've eaten fatty meat I know about it. I'm tired a couple of days a week but nothing an early night doesn't solve.

I'm mostly enjoying the peace of not constantly thinking about food.

Mounjaro Better for Weight Loss Than Ozempic, Study Finds

A new real-world study found that people taking Mounjaro lost more weight faster compared to people who took Ozempic.

3wDavid · 28/08/2024 10:08

Same reasoning for me as @VioletsHeart

I'm 3 months in and 3 stone down / 17% of my body weight. Zero side effects.

VioletsHeart · 28/08/2024 10:09

Oh, and I would not expect much from your GP unless they have an interest in obesity. Mine had to google Mounjaro when I spoke to them about it.

3wDavid · 28/08/2024 10:14

@VioletsHeart LOL. I literally had the SAME experience. Mine actually one upped yours - he was arguing with me (yes, arguing), that MJ is for DIABETES ONLY. I was like, Dude...do you not read the news / medical papers?? I had to educate HIM on the topic.

Snipples · 28/08/2024 10:16

I went with wegovy based on price as it was slightly cheaper. I've lost 25lbs in three months and am about to start weaning off it. I'm really glad I decided to go for it. It's made dropping almost two stone pretty easy and I look and feel much better and healthier. Good luck!

8rugby · 28/08/2024 10:17

Some people have chemical imbalances @jonnyjanetkeogh, which means that doing what you’ve done is simply a physical impossibility. But great for you that it’s worked doing it that way!

Type2whattodo · 28/08/2024 10:22

My GP won't even discuss them despite my having T2 diabetes and a BMI of over 40.
I've paid privately now for Mounjaro as was reported less side affects and better results.
I've taken 5 weeks of jabs now. I'm down 2 stone. Feel so much better already.
I would love to lose 5-6 more stone.

Itisallgoingtobeok · 28/08/2024 18:30

Thanks for the replies everyone. Well done to all on the weight loss, whether with or without the injections, it's a major achievement.

It sound as though either are an option, so I am going to take the plunge :)

LoquaciousPineapple · 28/08/2024 20:28

Mounjaro is more effective with fewer side effects. I don't know why you'd pick Wegovy, it seems foolish not to go for the proven more effective option.

hockeysticks89 · 28/08/2024 22:08

Mounjaro has five weeks on one pen (including the bonus dose), wegovy has four

AmusedRoseCrow · 28/08/2024 22:25

How many weeks/ pens did it take you to lose 2 stone? Trying to decide if I should try mounjaro!

MrsBasset · 30/12/2024 05:01

Hiya where do I go about getting Monjaro from a reputable source please? What am I looking to pay. I’ve always thought diet and exercise best but want to give a try with both in the new year as I’m sick of the yo yo ing and need to lose about 4 stone.

You'll still need diet and exercise on mounjaro, it will just make it easier for you to stick to it. That's the only way you'll lose the weight on mounjaro.

Most of us use this website to check for registered reputable pharmacies with their price list to buy Mounjaro.

@3wDavid congratulations on your weight loss! I've just ordered my first mounjaro pen. I have 7-8 stone to lose
Please could you share what else you did to achieve your 3 stone in 3 months loss apart from the jab? Eg how many steps were you walking a day/how much water/ types of meals?

Redlightbulb · 30/12/2024 09:49

Yeah. I wouldn't bother with your GP unless you have a more personal relationship with them and they take an interest in what you are doing.
With my surgery you see someone different each time you go.
Mounjaro is the go to these days.

Oops just realised this was a resurrected thread.

Hi thanks for this. Sorry for being thick is the 2.5g for example a weekly or monthly cost?!

JustPassingByToo · 30/12/2024 13:59

@MrsBasset Hi, no worries. They're all showing monthly costs.

Congratulations on starting your journey!!!

I am currently 5 stone down, and I’d say the single most important thing is staying in a calorie deficit and eating good food. I just focused on minimum 2 l of water and upping my protein.
So my meals would look something like:

  • breakfast: coffee and protein shake
  • lunch: protein (meat/fish/eggs/tofu) with veggies in some combination
  • dinner: similar to lunch
  • treats: protein bar/yoghurt
Movement is nice and important down the line 100%, but it’s not the key to success and as the saying goes you can’t outrun a bad diet.

Walking is a great way to ensure you get some movement every day. I usually do 5K walk, sometimes 8-9K, depends on how much time I have. I also go to the gym twice a week - once for a cardio class and once for strength training. So nothing excessive.

I’d also say, 1 stone per month is pretty intense and I got some hairloss in there as a result (totally normal side effect with quick weight loss btw). The next 2 stone I lost in another 3 months and a bit and that is a much better tempo in my opinion. Because the rapid weight loss slowed to a much more reasonable pace, the hair loss also stopped. So if anything, slow and steady is the way!

It's great you lost weight through diet and exercise alone. 👏👏👏 Believe you me, I've tried that method and have been on literally hundreds of diets since the age of 8.

The volume.of exercise I do.has seen me complete two marathons and multiple shorter races over the years. So I'm far from lazy
The calorie counting and efforts to loose weight also saw me experience severe bulimia for over ten years.

In the last 40 years I've had times where I almost tipped underweight and times where I've been obese. But it's been a daily struggle to quieten the food noise every day for over 40 years, whatever my weight. And the weight when lost ALWAYS has come back despite my best efforts and trying hard every day. And as I've got.older.its been harder to loose anything at all.

Mounjaro is the first time ever that I have hope that the food noise will go. I don't have to resort to unhealthy methods to try and loose weight. I can cut my calories and continue to exercise and it will actually work this time. There will be days when I don't think about food. Days when I don't feel hungry. That for me is a miracle

I appreciate injections aren't for everyone. But for me I have hope.and faith mounjaro will be life changing. Not just because I'll lose weight (I've done that before), but because the food noise will dampen, and I will finally have some peace.

MjMadness · 02/01/2025 09:09

Sorry, to answer your question OP - i.went with mounjaro because it seems to work best and has fewer side effects...

12purplepencils · 02/01/2025 09:10

I didn’t really consider Wegovy as MJ seemed newer and better.

I’d tried Saxenda a couple of years ago and didn’t find it very effective. I’m a pretty slow responder to MJ but it is working for me slowly but surely.

mondaytosunday · 02/01/2025 09:54

For those saying don't bother either GP - I though this was a prescription only drug (both of them)? How do you get it if not through a GP?
