Any over 60's here?

I'm 5ft 6 and weigh 14 stone. Ideally would like to lose about 3 stone. Mounjaro is in the fridge and going to start on Friday. I've been piling on the pounds since menopause and nothing will shift them. Not even fasting, which was really successful a few years ago. This really is my last resort. Would love to hear success stories of people in a similar situation as me...

I am in my 60s with a similar backstory of difficulty losing weight since the menopause plus I have an underactive thyroid. I started Mountjaro last week and lost 3lbs. I have about 4.5 stone to lose in total. Like you this is my last resort. I am also worried about maintaining any weight loss if I do succeed.

Fromthesidelines · 22/08/2024 18:02

Another over sixty here, though a bit further on. I started in May with just under 4 stone to get to a healthy BMI. However, I may decide to stick at mildly overweight depending on how I feel/look.

My weight loss has been mostly slow and steady, though just come out of a 3 week stall. Usually around 1 to 1.5 lbs a week. No nasty side effects so far and coming towards the end of 7.5.

Important things for all, but especially us oldies, is ensuring sufficient protein and strength training.

Good luck!

Hi. I'm over 60 and have just applied to Boots online service for the Mounjaro injection. I'm 5ft 6" and weigh 17 stone.
Since losing my hubby and having a hysterectomy a few years ago I've piled the weight on. The more I try to lose it, the more I eat. I'm also on Thyroxine for very low thyroid function and I'm type 2 diabetic, oh lucky me.

I’m another over 60,post menopause & struggling with losing weight. I have high blood pressure and really need to lose around 4 stone. Am currently 13st 11lbs, and 5ft 3”- the biggest I’ve ever been. I’m waiting for my first Mounjaro to be delivered- hoping it’s here by Saturday. So I’m also very interested in success stories.

alphatoomega · 23/08/2024 07:27

I'm 70 and started when I was at the top end of overweight with high cholesterol. I have 7lbs to go to reach healthy bmi, but while I'm an active gym goer and do various classes 5 days a week, sometimes three a day, including weight training, I plan to stop when I finish my pen this week, regardless of bmi reading. I've lost too much muscle, possibly as I didn't realise the extra protein intake needed till later on. Success comes at a price (wrinkly skin, esp on neck) and remember that you need to consume 1gm of protein for every kilo you weigh. Taking mounjaro was worth it to me.

Sfxde24 · 23/08/2024 07:33

Am not quite 60 but close and was exactly your height and weight.
About 10 weeks in and a slow and steady loss of around 16lbs. Am on Wegovy and think it’s marvellous.
Just coming out of a 3 week stall and realising I need to up the exercise as I start the higher dose. Have realised I haven’t been taking diet and exercise as seriously as I should and just coasting and enjoying losing via smaller portions.

nationaltreasureDA · 23/08/2024 08:26

A couple of posts have mentioned the importance of protein. I didn't realise that this was particularly important with weight loss injections

HazelJoker · 23/08/2024 08:39

Hi I'm 64 .8 weeks in in monjauro and am 17lb down.minimal side effects luckily !
Struggle to eat 1200 cals a day so concentrate on protein and try to get at least 80g to 100g a day.lots chicken..cottage cheese..greek yoghurt...protein yogs and even a protein bar here n there.
I need to start some strength training as muscle loss is a concen .good luck on your journey

nationaltreasureDA · 23/08/2024 08:42

@HazelJoker a helpful post - thanks. I eat cottage cheese and Greek yogurt but have gone off meat since I started Mountjaro. I will have to look for alternative protein sourced

usernother · 23/08/2024 08:43

Yes, I'm over 60 and lost 3.5 stone using saxenda and Wegovy. Took just over a year. Best thing I've ever done.

HazelJoker · 23/08/2024 08:48

I like the my protein clear whey protein.tried a trial pack from amazon ..my fave was raspberry lemonade...20g of protein.
I've been told that better to spread out your protein intake thru the day as body can only absorb so much per hour ..so I save the drink for evening ..? To absorb over night.
I need to research this for myself though .

FarriersGirl · 23/08/2024 09:06

I am 63, 5 feet 3 and for most of my adult life hovered around 11 stones with plenty of diets along the way to keep me there! Since the menopause I put on 2 stones and for the life of me could not seem to shift it. I started MJ at the start of May [12 st 12lbs] and am now down to 10 st 6lbs the lightest I have been since I was about 30. It has been a gradual process, a few side effects, but mostly I have felt well and eaten a very good diet. It has worked really well for me.

tazzyb · 23/08/2024 12:16

Thank you to everyone for your replys. Lots of very interesting tips.
Supposed to be starting today but I've been putting it off. I have a very real needle phobia but have read that it's virtually painless. I'm also really overthinking the possible side effects. I have IBS so hoping that doesn't worsen!
I think I will struggle with the weight training part but realise it is necessary if I don't want to regain all the weight once I stop Mounjaro.

I’m 71 and been on medication for 2 months. In my younger days I was around 10 st. Then menopause, then Covid lockdown, then breast cancer and finally a new knee. Medication for breast cancer has seen even more weight go on!! Started in June at 14st 8 lbs. Weighed in today at a touch under 13 st. I’m aiming to get down to around 11st 7lbs. Think I’ll be happy with that.
Im hoping to stay on 5mg for the whole weight loss journey. Still feel hungry and I need to use my will power not to snack. Find it easier to make healthy meal choices and I’m eating smaller portions.

alphatoomega · 23/08/2024 15:18

This article helps to explain how much protein we need and answers the question on whether we can have it all in one meal, or spread over several meals. Quick answer is yes, but we would be unlikely to be able to eat the volume of food required for eg100gm protein, in one go.
I prefer unflavoured whey protein. In both coffee (20gms) and yoghurt with raw oats, nuts and fruit for breakfast (30gms), in veg soup for lunch (20gms). Dinner is chicken or fish (30gms).

How much protein can you absorb in one meal? We asked an expert nutritionist

Is there a limit to how much protein you can absorb in one meal?

BrownJenkins · 23/08/2024 19:55

I've had a message from Boots online. They have refused me Mounjaro.
Apparently, anyone diabetic or pre-diabetic won't be allowed it, on the grounds it may cause hypos.
I'm going to start a general thread asking if anyone who's diabetic has managed to access the weight loss injections.

Azuresky68 · 25/08/2024 19:24

I know I need to do some weight resistance exercise but am resistant to it! I do a lot of walking but need to start a routine at home. Any good routines on YouTube please? I have some weights and kettle bells gifted to me. Nothing too extreme as I am 68 and need to be careful not to strain my back. Thought I might take a look at Jo Wickes for Seniors.

MissFancyDay · 26/08/2024 12:16

@Azuresky68 I'd be interested in this too.

I'm on week 3 so have just started my journey and I've got about 5 stone to lose. I'm also 66 with very bad knees so it's all feeling very daunting!!

I walk 5 to 6,000 steps per day but I know it's not enough. I need to find a good exercise regime that I can do at home with my knees, I will start looking today but any suggestions would be great. I am going to try swimming but to be honest the cost of gym membership on top of the cost of Mj is a bit too much.

Fromthesidelines · 26/08/2024 12:26

I find the Lucy Wyndham Read classes on YouTube really good. There are hundreds of them but most are either low impact or have a low impact variation. They use body strength so less risky for older ones. I particularly like the walk and tone ones on location (eg Venice, Paris) so yiu get to look at nice scenery while you exercise.
The pilates live videos are also good, with plenty of easier ones. Conducted by a physio and easy to follow.

MissFancyDay · 26/08/2024 12:42

@Fromthesidelines Thank you for that suggestion, I'll check them out today 🙂

FarriersGirl · 26/08/2024 13:08

@MissFancyDay Have you had a look at your local public swimming pool? Ours does a monthly pass which makes it a much cheaper option compared to a gym if you can use it 2 or 3 times a week.

MissFancyDay · 26/08/2024 13:47

@FarriersGirl yes I think I will bite the bullet and do it, I've always been too embarrassed to go swimming at my size, but that is one of the benefits of getting older you care less about what people think of you. I do feel that Mj is giving me more confidence all round.

Many thanks for your post as it has made me feel better about my expected weight loss. Congratulations on sticking with your weight loss journey. I have never had big weekly weight losses. Been a yo yo dieter all my life. At 68, 5 foot, BMI 30.1, Mounjaro is my last resort. Got to BMI 25 in lockdown and was really happy with my weight. Managed to keep it off for a while but slowly crept up over 4 years. On my second injection yesterday and on my second day of a two week holiday. I haven't got access to any scales which is a good thing for me. We are staying in an apartment but will eat out so trying to make healthy choices..I don't actually feel hungry! I usually enjoy a few drinks on holiday - limiting this to one alcoholic drink a day but was quite happy to go out yesterday and drink sparkling water. Good luck everyone.
