Anyone on Mounjaro at lower BMI?

CrazyGoatLady · 20/08/2024 07:46

My first post - joined here for the Mounjaro threads!

I've just ordered my first pen. I didn't know if it would be approved as my BMI is just on 30. I have lost some through exercising/diet, but only managed 5lb since February! I'm prediabetic. My GP was useless, just kept telling me to lose weight and shoving the NHS healthy eating guidelines at me.

Weight loss has always been slow and painful for me, especially now I'm in perimenopause, also have a tendency to emotionally eat and probably have larger portions than I should. I have ADHD and that doesn't help. Calorie counting doesn't work - I feel deprived and am more likely to binge when doing it than not. What I need is to change my relationship with food and I'm hoping for the Mounjaro to help with that. I'm 5'5", currently 12 stone 10lb, GP says my ideal weight would be around 10 to 10.5 stone but for my body type I think 11 is more realistic, I do strength training and have a high % of muscle so getting down to the lower end of the BMI range probably isn't realistic for me. Obviously would also like to not have the prediabetes and worries about that getting worse.

Anyone here in a similar boat, with a stone or two to lose/using it to help with prediabetes?

The day you stop the drug, the weight will go back on. I’m not comfortable being on a drug for life. Madness

Literally the day you stop? All the weight, or just some of it? Come on.

It’s no different to any other weight loss programme, every single one has a regain risk. And if you aren’t going to take weight loss injections, then you can be as uncomfortable as you like about them, as no one will make you take them. Plenty of people take medication for life, if it treats their medical problem. It’s not a concern for anyone else is it?

Shouldntbutdo · 24/03/2025 18:12

No. You’re right. I get it, and I’m tempted. I just know people who have lost a lot of weight and put it straight back on again when they’ve stopped taking it. After spending a fortune. So I think you have to commit to it for years

Thank you - I’ve just done it at the top of my leg. I didn’t feel it at all. 😊
Let’s see what tomorrow brings!

Pepperwaggytail · 30/03/2025 09:21

Hey everyone, here’s a little update.
I’m coming to day 5 of my first week. Almost 3lb down and feeling good! I’ve had very few side effects. I’m a little more thirsty which is not a bad thing as I’m drinking more, no nausea (thank goodness!), mild constipation, but that’s normal for me (4-5 prunes a day seems to deal with that!) The biggest side effect has been incredible fatigue that hits at 7pm. I’m good for nothing after that. I’m sleeping like a baby though which is unusual for me, and feel alright by the morning. Yesterday was day 4 and I felt slightly less tired last night so I guess the effects might be lessening now?
Yesterday the whole family went out for an early Mother’s Day lunch. I had a delicious chicken salad (didn’t fancy anything heavy) which I ate slowly (unheard of) didn’t drink wine (didn’t fancy it 😵‍💫) and didn’t want a pudding 😵😵😵😵 Plus when we got home, I had to force the prunes down and didn’t want anything to eat at dinner time!
I am surprised and delighted with the weight loss because I’m quite experienced with intermittent fasting and never really had lots of “food noise” but obviously did experience lots of actual hunger pangs. With mounjaro I do enjoy food (really enjoy it!) but I’m just not bothered in the same way. Plus even with regular fasting and loads of exercise the weight was just not budging!
Im going to inject my next 2.5 dose in my stomach (Monday night) and see if the hunger suppression is a little better next week, and hopefully the side effects are still minimal. I shall report back! 😂

Glad it's going ok OP! 👍

You sound very similar to me!!

I was thirsty first couple of weeks, but it settled down.

Sorry to report that for me, the tiredness lasted 12 weeks. I was getting to the point of thinking 'is it worth it?' However, one day it just lifted and I've been fine since ;) I think it just took my body a while to get used to the medication. So hang in there on the tiredness front!

💛

This is 100% me I'm also 5ft 6, bmi of 29 just lost 2 stone and just maintained it for a month now, eating treats at weekend then being in same boat again come Friday, having trouble now budging off the scale. Something like this injection I think is what I need for that extra kick to get me back on track 😃

I suspect I speak for everyone on MJ when I say none of us care about your comfort levels, much less think they're worth taking into account when making our health decisions.

Shouldntbutdo · 14/04/2025 10:21

Charming. Touchy much?

You surely can't actually think people place any value on the sort of thing you wrote, though? There's a reason we joke about the bingo card.

Shouldntbutdo · 14/04/2025 12:07

Because nobody wants to hear it

SilenceInside · 14/04/2025 12:26

No, it's because it's a thought terminating cliche. It's meaningless. We all know that whatever weight loss approach you use, the weight will go back on if you stop and return to your previous habits. No one needs to be told that. And, by telling them something they already know, what are you trying to achieve? Are you saying that no one should ever bother to lose weight, because it is likely to go back on again? What is the point that you are trying to make? There is no point.

Shouldntbutdo · 14/04/2025 13:19

You’re right, I apologise

Zippie88 · 01/05/2025 13:27

I’m 5ft 7” and weight 12 stone 8lbs so my BMI is around 29 so I don’t qualify legitimately for this.

  • has anyone used this of a similar weight to me and seen successful results?
  • was the weight loss slower
  • what were the side effects
  • cheapest place to buy

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

SharpOpalNewt · 01/05/2025 13:31

My BMI was 29.6 or so but I was allowed it due to higher blood pressure. It's now 26 on 7.5mg and I'm carrying on to BMI 23/24 if I can.

I was just a bit heavier to start with- 13st 4lbs and same height. I'm now 12 st 2lbs and on 7.5mg and the side effects have been minimal. I lost 4lbs the first week and then most other weeks it has been 1-2lbs.

Zippie88 · 01/05/2025 13:36

Thank you, I think the dosage I would initially start on would be 2.5mg

SharpOpalNewt · 01/05/2025 13:44

Yes, I have followed the guidance and had 4 jabs at 2.5mg, 4 x 5mg, 2 x 7.5mg so far. All I'm doing diet wise is calorie counting and eating a bit less as for years I'd been eating high protein, lowish whole carbs, plenty of fibre, plenty of veg, and doing a fair bit of exercise - yoga, weights, cardio, but struggled to eat a small enough number of calories to succeed long term. Seems to be about 1400 for me - likely this amount allows for inaccuracies when I eat out or have a take away and can't weigh or measure everything, so possibly I am eating more than that sometimes even when I've logged everything. I might have to go down to 1200 to lose the final stone, though 5:2 is also an option and I might just try variable calories that way. I think my maintenance calories will be 1800-2000 at goal weight - I'll aim for that and gradually come off mounjaro when I get there.

wantmorenow · 04/05/2025 13:18

I am starting today and would love to know how some of you have got on? I have BMI of about 29 but like @MargoLivebetter have osteoarthritis and am rapidly becoming debilitated by pain when walking. @CrazyGoatLady how are you doing now?

Sallycinnamum · 05/05/2025 17:54

I was prescribed Mounjaro at a lower weight but only with Voy and that's because I have PCOS.

I am 5ft 4 and two weeks ago weighed close to 12 stone and have lost half a stone since starting the jabs.

I'd been toying with trying it for 12 months and don't regret it as I am insulin resistant and losing weight is hard going.

However, it is not for the feint hearted. It takes any joy out of eating and the side effects can be brutal although I've just had a bit of nausea so far.

MargoLivebetter · 06/05/2025 08:54

Good luck @wantmorenow . It worked really well for me. Took it from August 24 to early Jan. Reached my goal BMI of 22 then. Tapered down my MJ dose and have been off it completely for about 6 weeks now. No weight gain and feel so much better for it. My joints are very appreciative of the weight loss.

Melon2312 · 06/05/2025 13:26

I started with a BMI of 28.5 I think it was.

I’ve lost 12 in the first 4 weeks and my suppression has been really strong from the start. I’ve stuck with 2.5mg for my second pen as didn’t feel the need to increase. for the first few days after injecting I’m really struggling to eat anything at all, so it’s not surprising that my weight loss has been quite high, but it doesn’t feel altogether healthy to me. I try and force myself to eat as much as I can but there’s only so much forcing you can do.

Don’t know if anyone else is having the same problem?

MargoLivebetter · 06/05/2025 13:50

I stuck with 2.5 the whole way through @Melon2312. I also lengthened the time between doses to every 8 days for the first two months. I forced myself to eat at least 1000 calories a day, ideally 1200-1500 so that I wouldn't lose weight too quickly. I wanted it to be as slow as possible to try and retain muscle mass. I ended up averaging 1.8lb per week. In the early days I found I had to use protein shakes to get in the calories, as I was fairly repulsed by food and it was the only way I could get sufficient by just sipping them all day.

Melon2312 · 06/05/2025 13:53

Thanks @MargoLivebetter, think I might try the dosing every 8 days instead of 7.

also considered protein shakes, which ones did you have?

MargoLivebetter · 06/05/2025 13:58

I used Huel as I can't tolerate whey protein.
