How hard is it to inject yourself each day?

Have considered weight loss injections for a long time. How hard is it to actually inject yourself each day? I hate needles and can't imagine coping well with it

It's only once a week, not daily, and it's absolutely fine. They are the smallest/ thinnest needles you've seen in your life :) Don't worry.

pinkwaterbottle9 · 06/08/2024 10:32

I've injected myself 8-10 times a day for 25 years to stay alive. You'll manage.

Oh, really?

I'm considering doing them online, through boots I think. What's it really like? Is it going to change my life or is it a short course, fast weight loss then out it all back on?

No need to be sarky. I have a huge phobia of needles.

the pens i get are like epi-pens... they are pre-dosed and its just a press to the skin and click. they say injections because technically it is.. but its really simple and painless

you DO stlll have to do the work yourself... you need to consider a healthy diet and some exercise, you can't just take these and hope the pounds will just drop off!

and i do believe if you dont change your habits, once you stop taking the injection then the weight may pile back on and then some!

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 06/08/2024 10:37

I've been in a calorie deficit and exercising for a while, but it's slow and I want something to support that

It's a lot of money to waste if you have a needle phobia.

That's why I asked what it's like, to see how bad it is

The needles are really titchy - can you get someone else to do it for you the first time?

If they're tiny/you don't see them I'd be fine! I was picturing full on syringes, think vaccine style

It’s only once a week and they’re tiny. I mean like a little pin. By the time you’ve grabbed a handful of flab and stuck it in all you feel is your hand grabbing the flab you don’t feel the injection.

nothing like a vaccination needle. And it’s life changing. I’ve just completed 6 months and it’s been amazing.

I'm really in the fence, it makes me feel like I've failed by turning to them, but I also think this could be the kick I need to get to my goal weight

The "needle" is tiny. If you imagine like a Bic pen, it is not much more than the roller ball bit that goes in your skin, nothing like a syringe you would have when you have a vaccination.

I'm well padded so I barely feel it.

If you are very phobic, do you have someone who would do the first one for you?

Going to go and do some research about it all - boots offer wegovy and moujaro. Is one better than the other?

Well whether it changes your life depends on your attitude to it and whether you will change your habits.

It's recommended as a long term medication, even lifelong for a lot of people, not really a quick fix.

If you use it as a quick fix then it's a bit like a crash diet and yes there's a risk you'll put it all back on.

If/ when you come off it, your appetite will return, so you need to be prepared for that and change your habits in the meantime. Sometimes, losing the weight makes that easier and more motivating - I lose 2 stone whilst I was on it, and that enabled me to feel better in my body and enjoy moving more - so now I exercise more and can keep the weight off.

Mounjaro is generally better if you are new to it.

@NeedSomeAnswersPlease Why would you think you have failed? Mounjaro in its self does not make you lose weight, you still have to eat within a deficit to lose weight and adopt healthier habits to maintain once you come off it. What it does do is calm the cravings and 'food noise' that you often get when overweight.
I was always slim until I developed an autoimmune thyroid condition that went undiagnosed, I suspect, for around 2 years. I started medication but have never been able to shift the weight to any great extent. I've hit perimenopause and despite exercising 4 times a week cardio and weight training and following healthy eating I feel that I am constantly battling food noise that I never had when I was slim, telling me that I am hungry, telling me I need a second helping. It is exhausting. I've only been on it for a week and the relief from this is immense. I really believe that hormones have a huge influence on our satiety, hunger and ability to lose weight. I've done my research and I've weighed up the risks. I don't want to carry around this weight, I don't want to keep battling to get my life/confidence/self esteem back. I have one life and I want to live it. I make no apologies for that to anyone. Nor do I feel I am a failure.

Cerialkiller · 06/08/2024 11:00

I got a needle phobia after a really bad blood giving session. Pregnancy was hard as I would feel faint for blood tests but just had to force myself.

Mj has been fine. Had to gird myself the first time but then was like 'is that it?'. You don't even feel it going. Lots of people are worried afterwards that they messed it up because it didn't hurt.

Most of the time it doesn't even leave a mark. I got a little bruise once but that was it.

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 06/08/2024 11:04

I'm going to put it all on here instead of starting a new thread.

I'm 25, always struggled with my weight. I'm now sat at 280lbs. I've lost 50-60lbs over the past 3 years but I'm in a rut where I just lose all my willpower. I become a snack beast and give in to the "food noise"

3 months ago my mum convinced me to do the slim pod programme, she has done it and claims she has lost 5 stone!! She hasn't, and all she does is just eat fruit. It works for her so that's cool but I'm not that type of person. She thinks that anyone can do it if they listen to the podcasts.

I really enjoy being active but my weight is becoming a burden now and I really want to get a handle on it and take control.

I've looked online and Voy offers the pens of mounjaro for £139. If it works it seems like a bargain but I'm just so on the fence about it all.

KeepingUndercover · 06/08/2024 11:17

If you're unsure, don't rush into it. Read up on the pens. Read the big Continuing Mounjaro thread on this board, the opening post has links to all the previous ones so you can go right back to the beginning and see how people have found it. Read up on the differences between Mounjaro and WeGovy so you can decide which you want. I think the more informed you are going in to this the better.

Yeah I go away in 2 weeks and I really don't want to risk feeling poorly while I'm away. I'll do some research, I just feel like this is admitting failure. But on the other hand, it's not failing to get some help

It (Mounjaro) works, in the sense that more than one study has shown that people on average lose a significant amount of weight.

The first 4 weeks is a dose of 2.5mg which is the starting level, not everyone loses weight on this dose, but it prepares you for the next level of 5mg. Once you've done 5mg for 4 weeks you can stay on that dose, or move up to 7.5mg, then 10mg etc until you reach a dose that works for you. It is not a quick fix, you are a similar weight to me and it will take many months to get down to a healthy weight. You would need to go into it with a longer term mindset and really think about what you will do when you get to a healthy weight and need to come off the medication. What will be your strategy for maintaining, for example.

I have found that I am now rarely hungry, and when I do eat, I want to eat healthy foods rather than lots of fat/sugar/carbs. I don't snack, I have no urge to do that at all which I find fascinating as I just used to graze on snacky stuff all the time during my work day. I get full really quickly when eating, which has meant I've learnt to do smaller portions at meal times.

You may find you get a big drop of weight initially, and then it slows down or even plateaus, or moves up then down a little for a while. It's important not to get dispirited by that.

Mounjaro is the most effective money I've spent on weightloss resources, including Noom and SecondNature which did nothing for me. I'm currently about 20lbs down from my starting weight in 5 weeks.

Saxenda is daily injections. I'm on Saxenda for now, no side effects and the injections are no bother, takes less then a minute to do, I do it in the morning before i get out of bed. My stomach has quite a few little bruises but I don't feel any pain when injecting.
