Mounjaro - how quickly did you notice its effect?

Hello, I'm about to start taking Mounjaro tomorrow on the starter dose of 2.5mg, and wondered if any of you who have been taking it for a while can tell me how soon the effects kicked in. Given that a full dose is 10mg plus, I am dubious that such a small dose will do anything at all, given how large I am and how huge my appetite is. Would love to hear from you with any feedback! Thank you.

@@Lauxx1 I haven’t felt sick once in the nearly 10 months I have been taking mounjaro and appetite suppression is a side effect that not everyone gets. Are you feeling any more full after meals? Has your food noise quietened? Cravings lessened? Those are the ways to tell if the medication is doing its thing.

Combined with the fact that 2.5 is a low, starter dose and not everyone reacts to it along with the fact that it accumulates with stronger effects around week 3/4, I would suggest being patient. It’s a long game!

Hi everyone, I'm in need if advice please.
I'm 71, just retired from NHS & am very overweight at 22 stone. I'm not eligible for Mounjaro on NHS so have requested it from Healthexpress & awaiting approval.
The question of me not having a Gallbladder (removed 2012) keeps coming up & one company declined my request.
Is anyone having this treatment who has also had Gallbladder removed?
I need to lose weight to be able to have jnee replaced as I have Osteoarthritis. Any advice would be fab ladies. Thank you.

Straight away I could feel something going on after I first injected it- though perhaps it was my imagination as I was pretty worried to start with. I didn't get very strong suppression on 2.5mg after about day 4 each time. Though I still managed to lose 4lbs in week one and about half a stone while on 2.5mg.

Jenasaurus · 30/04/2025 14:06

Ok, so I am on week 27 and a slow loser, I started on MJ due to having type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and my BMI was 33, I have lost about a pound a week, sometimes slightly more but other times stayed the same so the average is just over a pound a week. My BMI is now 26 and I have about a stone to go. I lost the most weight on 2.5 but that is because that was when I was at my heaviest so the deficit hit harder and you always lose water as well in the beginning.

I am on 10mg now and had no side effects, the loss is still slow but I am now in a size 12 and don't look like a large potato with stick arms and legs anymore, but more importantly I am no longer considered diabetic or even prediabetic. Sadly my cholesterol turned out to be hereditary rather than diet related so they have increased my statins, but I did get it down from 9.4 to 7 with diet alone (they want it under 3!)

Good luck with your MJ journeys, what I have discovered is everyone's journey is different, some lose fast, some mid way and some slow. I also no longer snore, and have managed to give up vaping and binge shopping! it seems to have worked on all my cravings, as an ADHD adult its calmed that down too, so a lot of benefits other than weight loss for me. Plus there is Alzheimer's in my family, my mum, gran and uncle all had it and there is thought GLP1s help protect/delay this too .

Iamthemoom · 30/04/2025 15:09

I started on half of that at 1.25 and lost about 3Lbs the first week so within a day for me. I’ve gone up v slowly and only when I felt it wasn’t working as well for me as it had been. I’m on 12.5 now but I have friends who stayed at 2.5 or 5 the whole way through their weight loss journey and lost all the weight they wanted to lose.

Countesschaos · 30/04/2025 15:13

there is no one size fits all answer. lots of people on different strengths have different side effects. not every loses half their body weight in the first week, not every just loses a pound. you cannot compare your journey to anyone else's.

personally, i'm just into my 6th week and i am now on 5mg, and i have lost 9lb in total. some would say that good, others would say thats not a lot! i do not have full suprression, i still aim to eat 1600 calories a day, i still do 10000 steps and i still do the gym 3 to 4 times a week.

i want my losses to be slow, because i want to lose weight and it to stay off because i want to learn better habits around food.

NotsosunnyShropshire · 01/05/2025 06:44

Within 24 hours I was peeing for Britain. In 48 hours I had lost 3.5kgs of water. My ankles and feet were considerably less swollen.
Reasonable appetite suppression for around 5 out of the 7 days. Already have my first 5mg in the fridge.

Roundbale · 12/05/2025 16:10

Now 10 weeks in. BMI 21.5 from 27. Unfortunately my face is all sagging

Roundbale · 12/05/2025 16:11

I've gone for filler and Botox to fix but think I lost weight too fast . Should have gone for a single action jab

Pyjamatimenow · 12/05/2025 16:12

My suppression was higher on the lower doses. Your body gets accustomed to it

Col28 · 12/05/2025 20:22

Just had my 1st Mounjaro jab.
I'm 71, not gallbladder so it's taken a while to be accepted on Healthexpress.
I'm nervous & praying it all goes ok without you many side effects. xxx

I took my first dose last week and also have an app a coach a dietitian etc, I’m eating healthier because the app gives me advise etc but haven’t lost any weight at this point. I guess time will tell. I think it’s very important to ensure you eat enough protein. That is something I’m working on myself.

Has anyone experienced hair loss? I’m really worried about this.

SilenceInside · 03/11/2025 07:06

@JellyBabiesmunch yes, some people do experience hair loss, which can happen just from losing weight. It’s usually temporary and self resolving. I had some hair loss after about 3 months which sorted itself out after about another 3 months and now is completely fine.

Yes its a listed side effect of MJ and also can happen generally with weight loss. Not everyone gets every side effect though so there is no telling who will experience what. I started MJ in Feb 25, had no sulphur burps, no constipation, no stomach issues at all really but my hair loss has been horrendous. I no longer have prediabetes or high cholesterol though

You don't have to go up a dose. Best not to until significant side effects calm down. You could still be on 2.5mg.

LottieAnne07 · 18/05/2026 11:46

Hi,
Sorry to jump in. I thinking of starting monjaro. I have been seen by a hospital consultant for some health issues, but he will not discuss treatment until I have lost a significant amount of weight. I have 6stone to loose in total.
I see him again in 4 months and want to have made a dent in it.
My concern is once you stop the jabs do you regain all the weight ? Also will I be left with a lot of loose skin? I do have an apron belly after having my 3 boys. Will it stay?

Please if anyone can give me some insight I’d be so grateful.

SilenceInside · 18/05/2026 12:00

Hi @LottieAnne07 just for context, I have been on Mounjaro for 22 months or so, and I have lost 11st or so. I haven't stopped taking Mounjaro, and don't plan to for a while.

If/once you stop taking the medication, it stops having any effect on your system. So your appetite will return and you will be able to eat more. If you have not got well into the habit of eating less and exercising, then yes you run the risk of putting weight back on. The same as when you stop following any diet really. You need a plan for maintenance when you get to your goal weight, so that might mean reducing your dose gradually until you can stop and manage without the medication. Or it might mean staying on a low dose for a fair while, or indefinitely.

Loose skin. Well, you can't control if you get a lot of it or not, as it's down to genetics, age and any existing skin damage (sun/smoking). I have had two big babies and two c sections, my stomach is not going to be flat. It is looser than I'd like and wobbly, but I don't have a significant apron. If you have an apron at the moment, it will likely shrink and reduce, however what it will be like when you are at a healthy weight is hard to predict. But, would that stop you from losing the weight and addressing your health issue? Isn't it better to be a healthy weight and have the consultant treat you for your health issue, with some loose skin, than remain significantly obese and not be able to access treatment?
