Continuing Mounjaro... Thread 12

ObsidianTree · 06/06/2024 10:17

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30 until you get to a healthy BMI of 23 to BMI 25

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

11 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

12 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

13 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

14 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

15 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

16 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

I have lost weight before , it's just something always happens and it goes back on. Last thing being lockdown, only managed to lose 11 kgs and it's been years now and I got diagnosed with diabetes since.

I have my mum coming over in August too, and it'll make my life so much easier if I'm at least at pre lockdown weight(which was still overweight).

I don't think you can buy it privately with diabetes.

However, Drs can now prescribe it for diabetes that are obese. So maybe speak to your GP?

Also beneficial, as once you get it on prescription you can get it for life. Us non diabetics are limited to 2 years max currently.

@GloriaBunniford ironically I have been taking lots of other crap at various times throughout the years with no hesitation. No idea why I'm dithering now.

Will start the consultation with Zava now, otherwise it'll be months with nothing happening before I start considering it again.

Will look for a code in the thread if there's any left.

I think the dithering, in your case, and the ruminating, in my case, is all tied in with the emotional complications we feel about weight gain.
I normally make very quick and clear decisions about things, but I just couldn't about this.
And you've taken lots of other things but are hesitating over this.
It's because this is attached to our feelings about weight.
If it helps, funnily enough after spending weeks on end getting in a right old emotional tizz about ordering MJ.......fear of failure yet again after having tried and failed at so many diet programmes, fear of being the only one it won't work for, upset about being so overweight in the first place that I needed to try an injectable medication, all this leading to emotional triggers about the reasons why I'm overweight......all that worry, and guess what? The very thing that has eliminated all those worries is MJ itself!
@Marigolds24 has posted a code for you, right after your post about ordering from Zava.xx

I noticed on another thread someone saying that they wish the injectable weight loss community had their own forum on Mumsnet instead of taking up the whole weight loss chat page. Does anyone know how we would go about requesting this? I think it's a good idea. We are popular enough to have our own dedication forum /page right?

I think you post on site stuff asking for it, and then if you gather enough support/comments MNHQ will consider if it's viable and decide whether to do it or not. That's how some other subsections came to be.

LatinaLondon · 09/06/2024 09:46

Weigh in day was yesterday and also yesterday was exactly 3 months since I started MJ. Time has gone so fast and so far I’ve lost 12.60kg / 27.7lbs. I remember being so hesitant about it but now I’m happy that I took the decision to start and glad to have this group to share the experience with.

Starting Weight: 73.50kg / 162lbs BMI: 30.2
All doses 2.5mg

Dose 1 (-4kg / -8.8lbs) = 69.50
Dose 2 (-2kg / -4.4lbs) = 67.50

Dose 3 (-1.10kg / -2.4lbs) = 66.40
Dose 4 (-500gr / -1.10lbs) = 65.90
Dose 5 (-500gr / -1.10lbs) = 65.40
Dose 6 (+850gr / +1.8lbs) = 66.25
Dose 7 (-1.10kg / -2.4lbs) = 65.15
Dose 8 (-600gr / -1.3lbs) = 64.55
Dose 9 (-600gr / -1.3lbs) = 63.95
Dose 10 (-500gr /-1.1lbs) = 63.45
Dose 11 (stayed the same) = 63.45
Dose 12 (-900gr / 1.9lbs) = 62.55
Dose 13 (-800gr / 1.7lbs) = 61.75
Current BMI: 25.4

At this point I’m staying with Med Express because my bmi is too low and can’t be bothered again with forms, pictures and another letter on my nhs record. Also because they have confirmed they will prescribe until bmi 23 @DownWithThisKindOfThing @Soukmyfalafel
Med Express £5 discount code: RK5ARP

Brilliant idea @ObsidianTree
I've been wondering recently why mumsnet themselves haven't acted on this - they must be seeing that it's now thread 12!
Is this the only topic ever to receive 12 threads on the same subject?! And I feel like thread 12 is no-where near what it's going to get to as it grows more and more!
It's a wonderful thread.

ObsidianTree · 09/06/2024 09:51

I just went on to site stuff and actually found someone else has already asked and Mumsnet admin have approved it! So we should get our own page soon!

I think I'll ask for our threads to be moved over once it's open if possible!

The perfumistas thread on Style & Beauty has been going for years and years. They are well ahead of us. And the Our Girl thread on the TV board.

I do think the sheer domination of injectable threads on the weight loss forum must be so annoying though. I never look there, I just go straight to our threads but if the repitition of Q on here drives me mad I can’t imagine what it’s like across the board.

I pop on occasionally and do notice that there is a lot on there about injectable weight loss. I can imagine it must annoy those that don't want to use injectables or can't as under 30bmi.

Also think with our own forum we can start threads feeling safe that we are a dedicated forum to injectable weight loss!

Morning all, I'm on day 7 and due to inject my second injection today, but I'm just looking for some advice. Last night I got really unwell with diarrhoea and stomach cramps after eating a pretty normal meal, although I did roast my vegetables in oil. I'm wondering if it was the oil that made it too high fat? I'm already coeliac so already have to worry about what I eat and the thought of having to be conscious of not just gluten, but now also the fat content of meals has made me feel a bit worried. If it had been a really unhealthy meal (like fast food) that made me ill I'd suck it up, but the fact it was a normal home cooked meal where I had roasted vegetables in a bit of oil has made me think this isn't what I want my life to look like.

Has anyone experienced similar? Is it likely to be a one-off fluke that will get better, or do I have to be super mindful of any oil or fat in meals from here on out? I'm considering coming off the pen if it's the latter.

ObsidianTree · 09/06/2024 09:56

Everyone is different but for me, veges are now roasted in the merest spray of rapeseed oil - if at all. I find olive oil too greasy. I have a refillable glass spray bottle that I use.

ObsidianTree · 09/06/2024 09:59

It's really hard to say @Blushh

It could be a short lived thing from MJ with your body getting used to the meds, or could be because of the oil!

Are you 100% there wasn't any gluten in your food? As the reaction also sounds like one from gluten. My cousin is coelic and sometimes gets similar reactions when she's unknowingly eaten some gluten.

Just reading back through some of the posts. Lots of people meeting milestones which is very positive and lovely to hear. Such a nice thread and glad I found it and didn't have to do this on my own.

I'm probably the lowest I've been since before I was last pregnant six years ago, but many of the clothes I have lying around from then are still tight. I wonder if my hips are bigger now. I still have a little bit of belly pooch too, but I'm definitely smaller all over. I thought my clothes would be falling off me though, but I'm still able to wear some of my old stuff with a belt. Either my scales are broken or my body has just changed due to kids and being in 40s now. I don't really mind. I'm just happy to be 2st lighter and not have the humiliation of having to buy the next size up, which is what would have happened without MJ.

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 09/06/2024 10:02

@GloriaBunniford I bit the bullet and all ordered and now I'm freaking out. Stupid brain. I can definitely relate to your post.

I'll be fine once it's here and I've taken the first dose, but until then there will be a bit of madness.Grin

They might question it, but you could just say you felt the 10mg was too strong so wanted to go back to 7.5mg

Great idea to have a dedicated board, there is so much helpful and supportive info on here that it would be great to be in one place, but definitely for those who do not want to / can't use injectables, it must be frustrating to have the weight loss board so full of less relevant (to them) threads.

Big meals and /or meals with oil, cream or butter are a no no for me. I end up on the toilet and get stomach cramps. It's a fairly common reaction I believe. I use frylite instead of any oils now and avoid too much dairy.

Yep I'm 100% sure there wasn't any gluten, I checked and double checked everything afterwards. The reaction was similar to when I have accidentally eaten gluten, but the pain was in a different area.
