It's an interesting topic. I think its a mixture of things. Weight is visible (you can't hide your shape) so it's 'owned' by the viewer, whereas other conditions are not. It's also treated very differently. You would never hear someone say 'ooh, well done getting your blood pressure down', nor get the same judgement if someone said they were on blood pressure pills. You simply wouldn't talk about medical stuff as it's personal but for some reason weight is deemed acceptable discussion openly. Some people CAN lose weight by eating less and moving more. This is the mantra that is spouted everywhere, eat less calories and you will lose weight. As we know it's vastly more complex than this. People respond to food differently. I have been on holidays with 'slim' friends and would be eating exactly the same the whole week. I'd put weight on, they wouldn't, we just have different metabolisms, gut flora, resting energy needs etc. trauma also plays a role and is deeply personal. My sister is younger and slim, I am overweight. I just look like the lazy greedy one, because how could two sisters be so different being brought up the same? Except we weren't, I'd have to go to neighbours for food because our parents had spent it all on fags, no lunchbox or dinner money and no free school meals because they were too proud (I'd take an apple for lunch everyday). They had more money when my sister came along so she had none of these worries. As such I value food as a precious resource much more than her, so hoard (then eat it!).
If anyone asks me if I am on them I will be honest, but I haven't told anyone as I don't need judgement or unwanted opinions on top of my already busy brain trying to relearn how to be healthy. I would just say 'you know when you eat a meal and you feel full and don't want anymore? Yeah, I don't get that.....ever. I eat until it hurts, then when it stops, I feel hungry so do it again, and again, and again'.
It's not shame, I'm proud to be doing this but society isn't ready to accept this yet as a sustainable solution to the obesity crisis so I'll keep shtum for now.
