Continuing Mounjaro...part 6

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system.

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day. There are protein supplements you can take. Myprotein have a good range. Ask for a referral code if you want to buy some.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress £149.99 - Sometimes there are codes that can be used for a discount. Ask for a code on here or do a Google search to try and find one.
  • Voy - £114.99 for first month then £229 after. Need a referral code (ask on here for one if needed)
  • The Family Chemist -£149
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 for 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. Or starter pack with 2.5mg and 5mg pen £319
  • Asda £184
  • Boots £219
  • Chemist4U £179

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

I'm finally going to be starting tonight having had the pen delivered two weeks ago.
I have tried to eat more mindfully in that last fortnight & have not lost a gram! I have, however, felt all consuming hunger a few times including now even though I have eaten a sensible amount for a desk based job. At times, I have felt that this has got as far as me becoming hangry. If this disappears, it will be incredible.

The podcast I am talking about is called science vs Ozempic: is it scarier than we thought? and is ‘only’ 40 mins long. It is mostly reassuring.

Choux · 22/04/2024 17:37

With the bonus dose a 5mg pen probably contains 26mg or slightly more Mounjaro. So could be used to do 4 x 6.5mg doses.

Or it could be given as 5mg every 5-6 days to use the 5 doses over 25-28 days.

Those are both good options. It's probably easier to just do the doses every 5-6 days to keep the levels high in your body. And neither option costs more than if you were throwing the pen sea after 4 doses and not using the bonus.

Choux · 22/04/2024 17:37

Sea should = away

Soukmyfalafel · 22/04/2024 18:30

Thanks Obsidian and Choux. Its good to think these things over with others and get an opinion on what to do. I think I will wait until next week. I am just flapping and worrying about being declined despite being assured its fine or it running out completely. I'm always anxious about these things. When you find something that works, you want it to go smoothly.

Everdecreasingcircumferences · 22/04/2024 18:44

@RunningAndSinging thank you so much for that video - really interesting and informative. It does explain why I am doing so much better on MJ than I did on wegovy. Makes perfect sense that it is genetic, and the food environment/cultural environment then compounds it.
I definitely feel those saying we're 'cheating' want our overweight to be a moral failing so they can feel superior - with these drugs levelling the playing field they lose that edge.

ObsidianTree · 22/04/2024 19:13

7.5MG IS AVAILABLE TO ORDER MEDEXPRESS!

code DOSE20 worked too

Some diabetic medication comes in reusable pens. Where you just replace the vial of medication. They should do this for Mounjaro really. Then the stock problems would probably be solved. Hopefully they are working on that!

That would be a great way to handle it!

Soukmyfalafel · 22/04/2024 19:28

I take it that's 20% off?

I'm not sure they'd take me on now as I'm still with Asda and now BMI under 30, it's promising it's in stock in some places now.

lurkylurk · 22/04/2024 19:40

RunningAndSinging · 22/04/2024 17:11

Yes it’s an hour and ten minutes - 😬. But good. Also the podcast and lecture linked on the other thread are really good. The podcast talks about the possible serous side effects and whether they have happened now that people have been taking the drugs for a while - Some good and some bad news there but it is really taking about Wegovy rather than Mounjaro.

Which thread are the links on for the podcast and lecture? I'm interested to have a look, TIA

Soukmyfalafel · 22/04/2024 19:42

I take it that on the thread that was harsh towards people on this medication, and that a lot of the critical posters gravitated towards the side effects rather than the benefits?

Soukmyfalafel · 22/04/2024 19:44

Just out of curiosity, has anyone with a BMI under 30 got approved for a new prescription with Med Ex from another provider using their photos of their current prescription. I'm sorry if this has been posted already, I have totally forgotten if this is possible! My BMI is still overweight.

Their AI (they use it to screen applications) will probably reject you when you fill in that BMI is under 30, but if you email or livechat them and ask them to look at it as you are wanting to switch having already been supplied it you might find they will accept you, worth a try if you are waiting to move up to 7.5mg and don't want to spend another month on 5mg while waiting.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 22/04/2024 19:51

Just tried Asda to see if they had updated 7.5 stock but no- not there yet.
Incidentally they had this at the top of the page - lack of 2.5 coming up in May. They really should have sorted stock before starting this in UK, 5 mg not really working for me.

That's for Wegovy, not Mounjaro, probably the expiration dates on their batches of Wegovy 0.5mg are coming up!

Choux · 22/04/2024 19:53

@NaturalBlondeYeahRight that's about Wegovy not Mounjaro though?

LifeisHard73 · 22/04/2024 19:55

Been feeling sick and had heartburn all day today 🤢

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 22/04/2024 19:59

I'm sorry everyone, it's been a long day! That is indeed for wegovy. I'll try and take off. It was on the order page for mounjaro in my defence.

Everdecreasingcircumferences · 22/04/2024 20:00

Just had evening meal (lidl protein ready meal with rice amd carrots) and had a fleeting thought that I fancied something sweet but the thought didn't linger.
Told a close friend that I'm on MJ and she's been really supportive, feels good to have shared something so important to me with her.

@LifeisHard73

I get heartburn and really painfully on Mounjaro Esomeprazole or Omeprazole (can buy over the counter at chemist) absolutely handles it but also gives me bad wind!

The other people on here that recommended it have no side effects from it though (and wind is better than heartburn except when it wakes you up in the early hours, maybe take it early in day 😂)

Thank you. I have esomeprazole from the doctors as I used to get really bad reflux but haven’t had for ages - I took some earlier. It helped a bit but it’s not lasting long. It’s fine, I’ll push through and hope I feel better tomorrow.

im also waking up 2-3 times a night to pee which is annoying! And annoying for my OH as he informed me this morning 😬😂

Samsam23 · 22/04/2024 20:15

Has anyone been having bad headaches whilst taking mounjaro? I am calling docs in the morning but for the last week everyday I've had a bad headache and no painkillers have helped. Wondering if side effect or something else

I've had a few more headaches than usual.
I've found 2paracetamol and 2ibuprofen at the same time helps but they do come back later and I have to repeat. I think it's tension as my jaw is also tense at the same time
