Is an orange dress a big no-no when bridesmaids will be in orange?

Finally settled on a dress I’m attending soon after trying on lots, only to realise today that the colour scheme for the wedding party is burnt orange and bridesmaids will be in burnt orange. My dress is a brighter orange - see picture - but I’m not sure what the etiquette is here. Very different style to the bridesmaids and a different shade. Advice please as I’m now worried. I’d hate to offend anyone.

I think that's ok, but perceived wisdom seems to be to drop the bride a message and check. It's a lovely dress!

Daffodilsinthespring · 05/05/2026 21:30

Best if you don’t.

Charlenedickens · 05/05/2026 21:31

I’d not wear the same as the bridesmaids, no.

Thank you, I love it and would never usually choose orange! I think asking the bride might be a good idea.

Burnt orange is totally different to that colour IMO but yes you could check with the bride if unsure

Cleo65 · 05/05/2026 21:34

No

FrankieMcGrath · 05/05/2026 21:43

No way - that’s terrible to wear the same colour as the bridesmaids!

This is what I’ve been told by others. I was verging on the side of it being different enough but I am really worried about anyone thinking it’s a faux pas!

Even a completely different shade? What if I’d never found out the scheme was burnt orange?!

Personally I don't even read that as orange, more as a deep, rich yellow?

It's a beautiful dress.

Then I’d be grateful that you did as you would look ridiculous on the day (caveat is that you speak to the bride & she says it’s ok (but I still wouldn't even then!))

Edited

I agree it’s a beautiful dress but it definitely looks orange to me. Maybe it’s my eyes but it also looks slightly burnt orange to me, what’s the difference between the 2 colours?

Notonthestairs · 05/05/2026 21:49

Burnt orange is a reddish brown.
Nothing like the colour of your dress.

By all means text the bride if you know but I can’t see the problem.

AimInCup · 05/05/2026 21:52

Burnt orange colour and description in Google search.. your dress is stunning and looks a very different shade to this...Imo..

I wouldn’t deliberately wear the same colour as the bridesmaids. You risk people mistaking you for a bridesmaid and it looking odd in the photos.

I did actually wear a dress in the same colour (baby blue) as the bridesmaids when I went to a wedding last year. In my defence, it was my husband’s work colleague (who I’d never met before or the bride). I asked what colour the bridesmaids were in and he didn’t know (neither did the groom).
I did feel a bit awkward when they walked in and I did get some odd looks from the bridal party.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 05/05/2026 21:55

I see the dress as more yellow too. Burnt orange is open to interpretation.

FrankieMcGrath · 05/05/2026 21:56

Thanks @AimInCup- I did google after asking & it still looks like a variety of the shade to me, so far too similar to the bridesmaids dresses, especially these days when bridesmaids no longer seem to wear identical dresses but rather a variation on a theme.

Anyway, I wouldn’t but obviously up to the Op.

PurplePetalPip · 05/05/2026 21:58

Thank you all so far. Seems it’s quite a divisive one! For context I believe the bridesmaid dresses will be more like these shades.

I almost turned up at my brother and SiL wedding in a purple dress, yhat was exactly the same colour as the bridesmaid and the MoB. Luckily I couldn't find suitable shoes so picked something else.
Worst of all my mother has seen my dress AND the wedding colour scheme and never said a fecking word!

PrincessOfPreschool · 05/05/2026 22:10

Maybe it's my phone but your dress looks nothing like burnt orange. More like apricot. That's like saying the bridesmaids are wearing navy blue so no guests can wear any shade of blue, be it baby blue or turquoise.

I would buy the dress and wear it without asking the bride.

PullTheBricksDown · 05/05/2026 22:15

It's not yellow, it's definitely orange. But a lovely dress and different to burnt orange which is more like what I'd call terracotta. I would send the bride a photo and say you'll wear something else if she's unhappy with it. Reckon you have a good chance she'll say it's fine.

It doesn’t look ridiculous to be in the same colour as the bridesmaids. I’ve been to loads of weddings where I have had absolutely no idea what the bridesmaids are wearing. I’ve never worn the same colour, but only by sheer coincidence.

wecangoupupup · 05/05/2026 22:19

This would never even occur to me as it’s always obvious who the bridesmaids are?!

Greywizardpeg · 10/05/2026 22:05

That burnt orange colour is a hard colour to look good in. I would need a spray tan.
The bride would definitely be paying for it!
