How much cash gift is appropriate for friends’ wedding with children invited?

Attending a wedding in the summer for friends. We met through our kids. We’re all invited ( 2 adults + 2 kids). Venue is about 2 hours from us. Wedding on a Monday so day off work. We won’t be staying over as hotels were £400+.

How much cash for a wedding gift is the going rate these days? Don’t want to come across cheap!

It would be either £50 or £100 here. £200 is for family only.

franklymydearscarlett · 23/03/2026 22:51

I think £100 is fine, sometimes I have given a box of Biscuiteers (£40) with £50 in a card

AnnaQuayRules · 23/03/2026 22:53

£100

Love2read12 · 23/03/2026 23:28

I am in Scotland maybe different but 300 min is what we would give. I got married 2010 and average was £100-150 then

Gabitule · 23/03/2026 23:35

£100 per couple so £200 for 4 people.

i recently paid £300 for a christening so I am beyond shocked at suggestions that the gift should be £50 for 4 people.

MeganM3 · 23/03/2026 23:38

£100.

It's not per person. Gifts are from an individual or a couple or a family unit but there's no requirement at all to work out how much per person it represents and again it is crass to do so. I would give the same at a wedding I was attending solo as I would with DH or with DC too.

Christening would be more like £30.

Who would expect a wedding present from kids!? I think it depends on how close you are to them and how much spare money you have, £50 - £100 sounds about right to me.

£300 for a christening sounds bonkers to me! I can't think of anyone I would be giving that much to, even family!

carnivalcat · 23/03/2026 23:55

I got married in 2024 and most monetary gifts from day guests (that weren’t close family) were £100. Some more, some less, all appreciated!

£100 but if on a lower incolm 50 fine!

For four meals? I would think higher

No, as a wedding gift. You don't pay for the meals!

ImDoneOnceAndForAll2 · 24/03/2026 03:37

What fresh hell is this? £200 on average for someone you know through your children?
Christ on a bike

Hadalifeonce · 24/03/2026 03:40

Whatever you are happy to give, can afford. £100 is certainly enough in my book

LIghtbylantern · 24/03/2026 04:13

I’d give £200 from a family.

BenedictsButton · 24/03/2026 04:59

A friend through the children, £50. £75 at a push if I really liked them. Some people appear to have more money than sense.

Perhaps they don't have as much money as you?

People should give what they can afford, not some arbitrary amount dictated by someone more well off.

firstofallimadelight · 24/03/2026 07:05

£50-£100 depending on how close you are.

hazelberry · 24/03/2026 07:07

£50

xOlive · 24/03/2026 07:08

£50-£100.

I was MOH at a wedding years ago and the day after the couple were going through their cards and gifts. This couple are very well off and both sets of parents are multi-millionaires. They had maybe 2 that gave over £200 and they were absolutely blown away. Most gave around £50-£100 and they were so pleased and grateful.

Catcatcatcatcat · 24/03/2026 07:10

£100

EatMoreChocolate44 · 24/03/2026 07:20

I think it depends where you're from. In Northern Ireland £100 per person seems to be the average among my friends and family (& a recent Reddit thread 😂). Not sure about kids but I would think £200.

Thought23 · 24/03/2026 07:26

Thank you for all the comments, I’m shocked at some saying £250 and that is way out of our price range! We will be going for the sit down meal and we do want to go, despite the effort (I was just trying to give all details)

I think I’ll go with £100 possibly £150. That seems normal! I’ve never understood paying for per head, glad to see others agree 🙈

I am also in Scotland and I don't have £300 for a wedding present

theleafandnotthetree · 24/03/2026 07:38

In Ireland, anything less than 200-250 euro in these circumstances would be considered tight. I got married 20 years ago and the lowest we got from a couple was 150 euro! This and funerals may be where our cultures diverge the most!

DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat · 24/03/2026 07:39

£50
