Wedding dinner !! Quail?

Has anyone had quail as a main course for a wedding ?
I tried it at our tasting and it was delicious but I have never had it at wedding and I am afraid people will think its too fancy or not enough meat.
I am between that or lamb, which might be more typical for guests..

Only if it is boned out and rolled, or just the breast as a starter.

Whole quail are a PITA to eat. High chance of someone choking on a bone too.

Gah, reading this thread is so boring

No, too much for a wedding. And I’d only go lamb if guests can chose other options like fish or vegetarian, most people don’t like lamb

*some people don't like lamb.

I don't know anyone who doesn't love it.

Ilovemyshed · 29/08/2024 15:06

Given that it is a mild flavoured poultry, why not go with chicken supreme for all the guests and just have quail for you?

Notreat · 29/08/2024 15:11

I would serve it. Presumably there will be s vegetarian option too? So people can choose that if they don't want the quail

TheChosenTwo · 29/08/2024 16:15

I wouldn’t know how to tackle a whole quail (dh does the cooking and carving 😂), I Mean I’d have a go but would probably end up with 2 easy to access mouthfuls and just eat the other courses and the sides.
and to be totally honest with you some of what I said was bollocks because if I’m at a wedding I’m drinking and when I’m drinking I lose all interest in food completely so I’d just be getting happy and tipsy!
Have what you want, it’s your wedding!💒

I’ve also had quail deboned and stuffed with haggis, but I thought that might be a bit of a stretch for a wedding in France. And more ppl are weird with haggis than black pudding. French black pudding is amazing.

Tu veux dire du doundin noir, sûrement?

Cut the breasts off and eat with whatever else is on the plate.

The legs? Pick them up and get involved! It's absolutely fine etiquette when eating small game birds (or lamb cutlets) to pick them up and remove any remaining meat with one's teeth!

I wouldn't know that it's "fine" etiquette to pick up bones in your hands and I wouldn't do it wearing wedding clothes. Maybe that makes me unsophisticated, but why would you want guests to feel uncomfortable?

I wouldn't.

I absolutely wouldn't.

But life is a learning experience surely?

If we only ever eat chicken breasts.

We only ever eat chicken breasts.

How would you learn by having a plate of something you don't know how to eat put in front of you at a formal occasion?

Look what those around you are doing?

That's how we learn isn't it?

Sparklytoe · 30/08/2024 11:42

I'm not sure that it's fine anyway. I think it's one of those things that's fine amongst the posh, but would fill the middle classes with horror(like shoes in the house) 😆

That made me laugh.

Fair enough.

How do you know if the person picking it up next to you is finely versed in these things or raised in the gutter?

But one in, all in!

You can probably tell by how they approach any food item.

If they're used to it, they'll look relaxed.

Wild eyed chomping? Not so much.

What have I learned?

I learned that we're all born knowing absolutely nothing.

And we pick it up as we go along.
