Wedding dinner !! Quail?

Has anyone had quail as a main course for a wedding ?
I tried it at our tasting and it was delicious but I have never had it at wedding and I am afraid people will think its too fancy or not enough meat.
I am between that or lamb, which might be more typical for guests..

I love quail! Much more interesting than chicken. The flavour isn't too wacky though so anyone with plain tastes will still probably like it. It looks cute as well. I've not had it at a wedding but I always think wedding food is very boring. Dry chicken or dry lamb?!
Definitely go for quai!

BarnacleBeasley · 29/08/2024 11:40

I would be delighted to eat quail or lamb, but given how fussy a lot of people seem to be, just wanted to say that the lamb will be pretty pink as well in France (yum!) and some people might not like that either.

I thought that too. I would also love quail, or very pink lamb, but reading this thread I see how many would dislike either.

I'd eat either quail or lamb but there are a lot of people who wouldn't.

To save your money and your guests going hungry, I'd go with something else - probably chicken! - and to make up for going the lowest common denominator' route, I'd make sure there's a fabulous choice of side dishes and lots of lovely French bread and cheeses.

menopausalmare · 29/08/2024 11:53

That's a no from me. Or liver pate etc. 🤢

Andthereitis · 29/08/2024 12:04

It really isn't for everyone. I know I wouldn't serve it to my family.

Your wedding will be special without you giving everyone something exciting on their plate.

The wedding is in France as my fiancé is from here. So it will be half UK half French guests :)

I think with this update I'd go for the quail.
As its in France I think your guests are more likely to be accepting of something "a bit different" for me personally i'd love the chance to try something new! Also you think its delicious and its your wedding so why not?!

I'm assuming you would have the option of something vegetarian or vegan?? In which case anyone who really doesn't fancy the quail could opt for that option instead.

newtb · 29/08/2024 12:13

Quail in France tends to be served with the neck and head on. Could bé off-putting unless you specify that they're to be removed.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 29/08/2024 12:29

I have been to a wedding that served quail, it was absolutely delicious and a delicious discovery having never eaten it before 😁 so I would absolutely say go for it, it was a huge crowd pleaser!

My ONLY thing to be mindful of is there’s some lovely pictures of people at tables with plates of bones infront of them 😂

Galiana · 29/08/2024 12:42

I'm not sure why people always chose menus to cater for the fussiest guests, surely that means only a few people actually like the meal and to people who actually like and enjoy a wide range of foods, it's very bland and boring.

Better to go for something fabulous that you enjoy, give guests vegetarian/vegan options, and if anyone still moans, sod 'em.

We chose a meal that would appeal to the most people possible as they were our guests and we wanted them to be able to be happy to eat the food. We were very aware that most people had travelled a long way and had made considerable effort to be there.

Of course there I’ll be accepting of it.. they love the bride…..doesn’t mean they will eat it though….they will just smile ….push to the side of the plate discreetly….and say how lovely the veg were…..and cover the quail, with their napkin when finished to not bring any attention to it…..manners innit

Cos people don’t like waste…..if you served quail at a family wedding I was invited to then I could immediately lay tell you of 15 people who wouldn’t eat it ….they wouldn’t be rude…..they just wouldn’t eat it🤷‍♀️

palepinkmermaid · 29/08/2024 13:02

In France, do as the french do.

Enjoy delicious food :)

Personally I'd love it.

Ive got a UK wedding and when we tried our food we had to be less adventurous - even lamb was out as some don't like it.

It's your wedding so do it your way!

MotherofPearl · 29/08/2024 13:08

I find some of the attitudes to food on here - and indeed more generally - really frustrating. I don't get the weird squeamishness about meat on the bone (though my DH is like this - I find it so irritating). Meat on the bone is always tastier and more succulent. As for lamb being "too strong." Confused It's almost like some people want their food as bland and boring as possible.

Go for the quail, OP.

Presumably all these so not fussy guests can also be perfectly happy with a "bland" meal?

If you served quail in some of my circles there'd be people who just didn't know what to do with it. It's not good manners to make your guests feel uncomfortable.

I don't know anyone who'd complain, but they'd be hungry and again, why would you want that for your guests?

Personally, I'd be excited to try it, but also think it was a bit pretentious OTT, but maybe it wouldn't come across like that in France

So you do you 🙄

Mum2jenny · 29/08/2024 13:11

Maybe have the quail deboned and stuffed? I’ve had quail stuffed with black pudding and it was really tasty.

mitogoshi · 29/08/2024 13:11

@Mum2jenny

Now that would really put me off, love quail, hate black pudding Grin

Brendabigbaps · 29/08/2024 13:14

I eat most things but I wouldn’t be impressed with quail. I also don’t want to have to concentrate on getting the meat off the bone, I’d rather be talking to the others at my table.

YY to the black pudding! Providing it was the proper good stuff.

Why do keep posting about how much you dislike food?

Why don’t you try and enjoy it instead?

I agree meat on the bone is delicious and succulent (and has health benefits also) but it’s not for everyone and we wanted to be good hosts at our wedding and part of that was ensuring as many of our guests had a really enjoyable day - and didn’t feel like they had to go for a vegetarian option when meat eaters. Yes, you can’t please everyone but I’d bet good money that more people would prefer to not have quail than to have it. And it’s not because we keep company with inferior taste in ‘bland’ food.

Oh gosh, come on: I’d say black pudding is a far more unorthodox choice at a wedding than quail. 😂🤦🏼‍♀️
