Wedding dinner !! Quail?

kik4848 · 29/08/2024 09:39

Has anyone had quail as a main course for a wedding ?
I tried it at our tasting and it was delicious but I have never had it at wedding and I am afraid people will think its too fancy or not enough meat.
I am between that or lamb, which might be more typical for guests..

Yum! Don't worry about what other people think, some people will complain no matter what you do, so you do you.

I don’t think people would complain….not at a wedding….I certainly wouldn’t….I just wouldn’t eat it

I think when you're serving lots of people the same thing with no choice, you have to play it safe. I'd love it, my DH would hate having to deal with the bones.

This^
I would love it at home for family meal or out with DH but in my best clothes after a few drinks in a wedding atmosphere I want to be relaxed, I don’t want to be on alert for bones and demonstration of super fine motor skills.

I have had it at UK weddings, I don’t remember it being a big deal (as in people causing a fuss about it). You’re not going to please everyone. If food is important to you and you want quail then have it. If you want to please the majority of your guests, go for something most people like.

I’d been to a lot of French and British weddings and the food tends to all merge into one. The only one that stood out was an amazing bbq with different choices of meat, great sides, lots of dips. Everyone could have what they wanted, the food was plentiful and delicious!

I love quail and would be ecstatic if it was on a wedding menu, especially in France, as I could be reasonably sure it was cooked properly.

It's not a strong gamey bird so I can't see many people having a problem with it.

Loads of people don’t like bones…..only like white meat…..it’s fine to serve what you like as long as you happy for a lot of waste….none of my family would eat it…..but we would be very polite….just push it to the side and eat the veg….we wouldn’t complain

I love wedding like this…..we went to one at Christmas …..it was superb

I would be asking about the veggie option as I can't bear bones on my plate, and detest lamb. However you can't please everyone and assuming you know all of your guests should be able to make a judgement on how well it will go down. I'd just hate to think of a lot of it being wasted if people didn't eat it.

RampantIvy · 29/08/2024 10:51

Judging from the replies on here it looks like the quail will be appreciated by your French guests and not by the fussy British guests.

I disagree that most people dislike lamb, but I do know quite a few people who won't eat it as it does have a strong flavour, so I would steer clear of it.

Rather boringly, I would probably go for a safe option like chicken and a vegetarian option and have some fancy vegetable vegetables and potatoes.

pinkspeakers · 29/08/2024 10:51

Sorry but I think that is a bad idea. Lots of people don't like dealing with lots of bones or a whole small animal. I'd be fine with it, but I know plenty of meat eaters who wouldn't.

A quail salad starter where the meat is off the bone would be fine.

I also wouldn't serve fish on the bone.

DiscoBeat · 29/08/2024 10:51

I probably wouldn't, the quail carcasses all over the lovely wedding tables wouldn't be a good look. I'd go with chicken breast instead, in a nice summery recipe.

Rummly · 29/08/2024 10:52

Jeez, people these days. Free food at a lovely occasion like a wedding and people moan.

Eat what you’re given. And enjoy it.

KreedKafer · 29/08/2024 10:53

I personally like quail, and would be delighted to be served it! But a lot of people are squeamish about having to pick the meat of the bones of an entire bird, so I would stick with the safer option if you want to please the majority of your guests.

SirChenjins · 29/08/2024 10:54

I wouldn't - weddings need to cater for the majority. Your own food preferences can be catered for at a restaurant of your choice another time.

SausageRoll2020 · 29/08/2024 10:57

I can't believe so many of you are fussy about bones! Have you never eaten a chicken drumstick 🍗?

Presumably OP will have a space on the RSVP for dietary requirements so anyone who is vegetarian etc will be catered for.

LadyDanburysHat · 29/08/2024 10:58

I have never had quail but would rather be served that than lamb.

PoodlesRUs · 29/08/2024 11:02

I'd go for it. The vast majority of weddings have the blandest most boring menus. Such an utter waste of a special occasion and money.

Not moaning just wouldn’t eat it….why should I eat something I don’t like? Would just push to the side of my plate….as would many others ….just think it would be a waste….but if the bride is happy then great😊

No would never eat a chicken drumstick …..nothing with bones including fish in our family ….we are all the same …..we don’t even eat brown chicken meat even without bones 🤷‍♀️

mitogoshi · 29/08/2024 11:16

If you can only have one meat I'd be wary about choosing either of these, too many people are fussy! I've got 3 meat options including the boring chicken in sauce and guess which is most popular? The boring chicken.

thriftyhen · 29/08/2024 11:18

There may be guests who find it unsettling seeing a whole tiny bird on their plate and also may not know how to deal with it. I think they are fiddly to eat. We keep quail for their eggs. They are the sweetest of birds. I wouldn't eat one, but then I'm vegetarian.

mitogoshi · 29/08/2024 11:18

I'd also be wary about lamb as it's served very pink in France and not to many Brits tastes, i like it pink myself, love quail too but I have more adventurous tastes

MrsStottlemeyer · 29/08/2024 11:22

I suppose it comes down to whether you would be bothered if there are lots of uneaten Quail or people leave earlier than you'd like because they are hungry.

Galiana · 29/08/2024 11:24

I have to ask the 'no meat on the bone' people, why?

Joanna897 · 29/08/2024 11:28

No I wouldn’t serve it OP and I wouldn’t want to eat it although I eat chicken. I’d choose the vegetarian option. Agree if there are no menu options (beyond the vegetarian/vegan option) you have to go pretty failsafe.

Btw my husband is French so we had a similar wedding in terms of guests and it’s tricky to align different guests and tastes we found when making menu decisions. Eg While the French side would be used to having foie gras served at a wedding (we’ve had it served at many - although I would never eat it), the (I presume) British side would not be so pleased to be served it so don’t assume the British guests would be so happy to have quail if the French side would be.

spanieleyes · 29/08/2024 11:28

I had quail for my wedding meal. Woke up in the morning ( stayed in the hotel overnight) and discovered on opening the curtains to the room, that there was a very large bird aviary outside in the garden, with little quail running around . 😩
