Help!!! Secret registry office marriage... What to wear

So what can I wear that I feel comfortable in? Getting married in just 2 weeks, returned a few dresses already as I felt overdressed for a supposedly relaxed, low key, informal wedding in a registry office (just our children and 2 witnesses).
I suit slim fit formal dresses, but feel awkward in a dress. Yet I feel like I'd be not dressed appropriately if I turned up in black smart trousers and a formal top....
Hubby to be and kids can easily wear black trousers and a shirt, but I'm finding it hard to know what to wear, and what I would feel comfortable in for a registry office, no frills affair! And I'm yet to look at rings 😬😬 This is why I've never gone down the wedding route as it stresses me out so much trying to organise the minor details!

We got married in our best jeans and favourite jumpers. I'm sure you have something in the wardrobe that you love to wear? wear that.

AnonNameChange45 · 21/02/2023 22:09

Whatever you're comfortable in.

Secretbride · 21/02/2023 22:09

I'd love to feel confident enough to do that! I don't know why I feel the need to turn up in an appropriate outfit, given I'm anti tradition!

You’re getting married…just wear a nice dress that suits you.

I don’t really get the angst. It’s not going to turn into Jordan and Peter Andre’s Cinderella wedding just because you wore a slim fit formal dress.

It’s a special occasion. Just do it.

AnonNameChange45 · 21/02/2023 22:10

To add, I can promise the register office staff don't care and will not judge!

SiegePerilous · 21/02/2023 22:13

I wore jeans, biker boots and a blue cord trenchcoat. Other low-key register office friends wore anything between their work clothes (quickie lunchbreak cancellation), a black wrap dress, a fabulous Issey Miyake pleated thing, and a white sundress and flat sandals.

Wear something you own that you like? Or go mad if you feel like it? Low-key doesn't have to mean casual dress if you don't want it to.

Now if it was spring/summer I would happily turn up in a maxi dress and feel confident and at ease. I think it's this time of year, and that I know everyone will ask what I wore etc. I just don't want to feel over dressed or under dressed

To mine, I wore black skinny jeans (they were fashionable back then), black ankle boots and a patterned shirt, French tucked.

You don't have to dress up. Just wear what feels good

pennysays · 21/02/2023 22:40

I wore jeans, black calf high boots, a white vest top and a lovely pink leather jacket. It was a good outfit though I wished I had worn converse as was my original plan.

Blueberry40 · 21/02/2023 22:41

We wore jeans and jumpers too- and didn’t bother with rings!

DibbleDooDah · 21/02/2023 22:49

On your wedding day I always think you should look like the perfect version of you. Totally glam normally then go all out with the big dress and sparkle galore. Jeans girl then give them a wash and buy some new trainers.

Look in your current wardrobe and work out which outfits make you look and feel amazing, then just get an upgraded version of that.

My niece wore a Stella McCartney Adidas all in one tracksuit / jumpsuit for her wedding and totally rocked it!!!! She wore it with some killer heels. She is a PE teacher and I’ve never seen her in anything other than sports kit. It made total sense and I still think she’s the best dressed brides I have ever seen.

How about a comfortable but cool looking trouser suit with a T shirt? This Mango one comes in white, pale blue or dark pink. Mango suit I think any would look really cool whilst quirkily classic! Have a wonderful time whatever you wear.

Secretbride · 22/02/2023 09:43

Thanks everyone, you've given me the confidence to be OK with wearing something I'll feel comfortable in. I think I'll have a look for some black skinny jeans, maybe a satin style bright blouse to tuck in and some sort of jacket, with heels. Just need to find some wedding rings now 😬

Ooh following this op I'm in the same position. Just us and 2 witnesses. Ours will probably be in the summer so im thinking either a nice summers dress or jumpsuit type thing. Possibly jeans and a jacket/nice top. Never been one for a frilly white dress!

jay55 · 22/02/2023 10:02

Jumpsuit? I've got a lovely velvet one that is comfy but dressy.

Asos have some that are styled as bridal/bridesmaid.

Fraaahnces · 22/02/2023 10:04

What about a jumpsuit? Sexy, relaxed, comfy, etc…

passiveaggressivenonsense · 22/02/2023 12:12

I wore a dress I pulled out of a friends recycling bag ! Only chose it on my wedding day. If you feel comfy in trousers wear them ! Maybe dress the same as your husband and kids for fun. It's Your day to do as you like ! Congratulations.

Secretbride · 22/02/2023 17:19

I have actually ordered a pencil skirt and jacket which I'm waiting to have delivered...however I think I won't like it as it won't fit me well like it does the model 😉

In the same boat. Just two witnesses and no idea what I'm going to wear it's in late October so have time!

giantpretzel12 · 25/02/2023 15:48

I like the best version of "you" suggestion

PBandJs · 25/02/2023 15:51

We got married abroad but just us two and I wore jeans, T-shirt and sandals and husband was in a polo top and jeans.

It’s one of the most memorable days of your life so definitely do it how you want to and not how you think you ‘should’. We are so pleased we did it our way and I think that’s the most important thing.
