What to wear so I don't look like Mother of the Bride?

I am thrilled to have been invited to my Godson's wedding in July, especially given the restricted numbers. My husband and son will both wear their kilts; so easy! I don't like the traditional fitted dress and jackets that are worn by the mother of the bride or groom and don't really know what to wear. I am 50ish, size 10/12 and like midi dresses with pockets but also definitely need a jacket of some description (Scotland!). Please help lovely mumsnetters!

Last wedding I went to (2019!) 3 or 4 very stylish guests wore various lovely dresses and then warm shawls (dh called them blankets but maybe the fashion set call them pashminas ?) . Would something like that be an option with your midi dress ?

Thanks Back. I would really like a fit and flare summer coat kind of thing but can only find one in my imagination! Any help appreciated...

Have you looked on Vestiaire Collective? My mum recently got a silk coat from there, very 60s. Might find something on there suitable!

Hobbs do lovely dresses with matching coats or jackets.
Just check what colours the mum's are wearing and then choose accordingly.
When my dsis got married my little niece was a bridesmaid and dsil was so dressed up we referred to her as mother of the bridesmaid all day.
But it was all good humoured.
Although she does have form for thinking she's better than everyone else!

Thanks for suggestions. Vestaire is a bit too much like shopping at TK Max for my liking! Hobbs might be a possibility though, will have a look.

Jacques Vert is a good place to look, and have some very acceptable prices in their sale.

and, unfortunately this page IS called 'Mother of the Bride', and I know you said you didn't want that "look" Grin, but it actually has some nice jackets on it here

Ooh, thanks again Back. I will have a look at those.
