Would my dress look better without straps? Pic attached

Hello!

So this is my second dress Blush Bought my first, fell in love with it, but then tried it on again and... nah, not so much. I think I just got carried away with the whole dress shopping experience Grin Anyway, that dress has since been returned, so was quickly back to square one.

This is my new dress and I love it (have tried it on twice and still love it Wink ) but I'm now wondering if it would be more flattering without the straps. I do like the detail, but am thinking it might be a bit much??..

Also, do you think it needs taking in more at the waist, to give me more shape? I was told it could be, but would still like to breathe.....if possible!

Thanks

Definitely keep the straps. It wouldn't look right without.
The boob area looks a bit odd at the moment because there's too much fabric around your underbust. Once it's been taken in and fitted properly that will be sorted out. Don't underestimate the power of the alterations. Well worth every penny to have it professionally altered.

battenbergbutterfly · 12/03/2018 18:38

Such a beautiful dress as it is !

MandaraSugar · 13/03/2018 07:11

It’s stunning OP - the straps definitely make it, keep them on I say.

Once it’s been altered to fit you all will be fine. Enquire if they could build a bra into the bodice for you rather than you wearing your own underneath x

witherwings · 13/03/2018 07:18

Another vote for keeping the straps, they look lovely. IME, unless you are used to wearing strapless clothes, you will end up tugging your dress up all day so another reason to keep the straps.
The bumpiness will be fine once it’s properly fitted, mine was the same.

Steaksauce · 13/03/2018 08:26

Definitely keep the straps, they balance the dress out perfectly and it looks beautiful!

My dress had sleeves and I had so many comments about how beautiful my dress was - especially the sleeves on the day.

Fadingmemory · 13/03/2018 08:46

No, the straps look good!

LoveInTokyo · 13/03/2018 12:10

I also like it with the straps.

stickygotstuck · 13/03/2018 12:11

No dress looks better without straps!

It's perfect as it is, OP.

Mishappening · 13/03/2018 12:13

A vote for the straps here!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 13/03/2018 12:19

Team Strapless here.

Nah, only joking.
Love the straps. Also means you can wear a proper bra with see thru straps underneath or get one built in.

It doesn't quite fit but the overall effect is lovely.
Keep any veil plain and simple so it doesn't detract from the strappy loveliness

DinaSoares · 13/03/2018 12:30

KEep the straps.
If it hasn’t been fitted to you yet the chest area will be altered. Make sure that line in the fabric is gone when alterations are done. You can remove the cups if they are irritating you. Make sure you wear the underwear you intend to wear on the wedding day when you refitted plus your shoes.
I would also ask them to take in the area where your hands are, around the hips to balance out the top and bottom.

It’s a beautiful dress and really gorgeous on you!

Tobleronemonster · 13/03/2018 12:49

So we've had no votes for strapless then. Unanimous so far Smile

Dina, do you mean the line just under the cups? I hadn't thought about the bottom bit needing to be taken in. I actually thought it looked really balanced, but now I've just slightly covered the sides toward the bottom, it does look flattering. Interesting....

Does anyone else think it needs taking in around that area?

Definitely straps! Love the dress:) with the cups - mine looked similar until it was fitted properly- the lady basically sewed pretty much a padded bra into the dress and it ended up really flattering (I hope, anyway!!)

Brys125 · 13/03/2018 15:48

Wow what a lovely dress. I would definitely keep the straps, not very lady like if you have to keep 're-arrranging' on the day.

Tobleronemonster · 14/03/2018 11:11

Yeah, good point about "rearranging". Not a good look!

Hello! So another question- Veil or no veil? Also, can anyone find some dangly, crystal earrings which are fairly cheap, but don't look it? Confused

Bumping this

I love veils so I would say veil. IIRC they come in three lengths, so how long to go for depends on the back of your dress. If your dress is as detailed as the front, probably a fingertip length (short) veil to allow the dress to be seen.

Quickerthanavicar · 02/04/2018 12:20

Lovely dress. Keep the straps.

pompomcat · 02/04/2018 18:01

Team Strap also-they are lovely, & once the dress has been altered it will be perfect Smile
A big YES to a veil imo-a fingertip length one as a pp said?
I went with Swarovski for my dangly wedding earrings-they looked sparkly and lovely in the photos (bought a pair from Debenhams originally but they looked rather cheap and tacky when I put them in at home).

Tobleronemonster · 03/04/2018 15:11

Hmm lace or no lace on the veil? I was wondering if maybe lace would be too much, given the lace on the dress. Having said that, maybe it wouldn't go not to have lace.

Here it is from the side, to give you more of an idea of the detail. The straps continue with the lace at the back, which you can just see in the picture.

Ooo and check out my lovely blotchy arms Confused I shall definitely be dusting off my MAC face and body foundation!

OP posts:
BitOutOfPractice · 03/04/2018 15:17

Def keep the straps. I love them.

You might want to adjust your foundation though, it's a bit dark Wink

cheeseandpineapple · 03/04/2018 15:28

Agree with Dina and others about taking it in. Do you have a form fitting dress as a contrast and if so can you post a pic of you in it (with your dark foundation!) so we can compare to something a little more clingy?

I get the impression that the dress could be a slightly closer fit on your figure? Not suggesting you make it skin tight but it looks a bit loose. You have a great figure and the dress should be accentuating that but doesn’t quite.

Tobleronemonster · 03/04/2018 15:38

cheese, I've not had a proper fitting yet. It needs taking in and obviously the bumpy cups need taking in. I'm not sure it's a good picture though. I remember feeling it gave me a good, curvy shape in the shop, but in the picture, it isn't really doing that. I hope it's that anyway and not that they just had magical/lying mirrors Confused
